Former MLB OF/DH Hideki Matsui said he received several offers this offseason to play for teams in Japan but decided to retire because he felt he was no longer playing the game at a high level. The only MLB team that was known to have interest in him was the Houston Astros.

Tampa Bay Rays OF Sam Fuld (wrist) felt fine after playing nine innings in a rehab outing Wednesday, July 18, and he will stay with Triple-A Durham through the weekend. Fuld is likely to replace DH Hideki Matsui on the roster soon. Matsui went 0-for-3 Thursday, July 19, dropping his average to .159 with. He has no home runs and three RBIs in his last 28 games.
