The Detroit Tigers do not expect to make any qualifying offers to any of their free agents this offseason. This likely means 2B Omar Infante, CL Joaquin Benoit and SS Jhonny Peralta will hit the free agent market without compensation should they sign elsewhere.

Detroit Tigers RP Joaquin Benoit was rested Monday, Sept. 2, after having pitched three of the previous four games.
Fantasy Tip: Jose Veras came in for the save in Benoit's absence.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said it's unlikely that RPs Joaquin Benoit and Bruce Rondon would be available for either of the games of a doubleheader Friday, Aug. 16, because of their usage in the last few days.
Fantasy Tip: The Tigers lost the first game of the twin bill, so a closer wasn't needed. If a save sitch arises in the nightcap, expect Jose Veras to be deployed in the ninth.

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said RP Jose Veras will be used to pitch in the seventh or eighth innings, meaning RP Joaquin Benoit will continue to serve as the team's closer. However, Veras could fill in in the ninth if Benoit needs to rest. Right-handed hitters are batting only .162 (12-for-75) against Veras with two home runs, eight walks and 30 strikeouts.
Fantasy Tip: Veras can still serve a need in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues thanks to his solid peripherals, but he's likely not worth the roster spot in shallow leagues anymore.

Updating an immediate report, Detroit Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said RP Jose Veras will supplement the roles of RPs Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly.
Fantasy Tip: Well there's a bit of a curveball. Benoit has been stellar this season, but he lacks the closing experience to give confidence that he can withstand a playoff race. Veras could still come into play before all is said and done, so we wouldn't drop him. However, he loses significant value in a setup role.

The Detroit Tigers are not searching for a closer on the trade market thanks to the success of RP Joaquin Benoit. Instead, they're looking for a pitcher to bolster their bullpen in the seventh or eighth innings. The Tigers don't have many options, though, and they're no longer looking at Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon. Detroit has already been shot down on Baltimore Orioles RP Francisco Rodriguez, Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek, Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins and Seattle Mariners RP Oliver Perez.
Fantasy Tip: This cements Benoit's value as Detroit's unquestioned closer, and he is in no current danger of getting booted from the ninth.

The Detroit Tigers have been happy with the production of RP Joaquin Benoit since he took over as closer. He has allowed just one run over 8 1/3 innings since moving into the role, while striking out 15 batters and walking just three. They continue to scout other teams for bullpen help, and Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek was one named bandied about, but it appears any addition would be to bolster the back-end of the bullpen in a setup role, but not for the closer spot.

Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon said RP Joaquin Benoit has been helping with different things including his consistency. "I've been telling him little things about pitching," Benoit said. "Everybody knows his arm; he's a hard thrower. He just needs some pointers about what to do with his game."
