San Diego Padres RP Huston Street (groin) is dealing with a minor groin pull and is being pushed back.
Fantasy Tip: This injury shouldn't compromise his ability to be ready by opening day, but it does remind owners that Street is oft-injured. Joaquin Benoit is solid handcuff option and will likely be the first to step in for saves if Street misses time during the season.

San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit is expected to be the eighth-inning setup man to RP Huston Street this year. Benoit will also provide insurance to Street in case he's injured and misses time.
Fantasy Tip: Benoit can remain a worthy fantasy player to own, especially as a handcuff to the oft-injured Street. NL-only leaguers probably wouldn't mind him gracing their roster, either, for his valuable peripherals that should look nicer at PETCO Park.

Despite signing free-agent RP Joaquin Benoit (Tigers) on Saturday, Dec. 28, the San Diego Padres are still in the market for extra bullpen help if it comes up. The team has floated the idea of using SP Cory Luebke in relief as he works back from injury.

Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres RP Joaquin Benoit will make $6 million in 2014 and $8 million in 2015. The deal also includes an $8 million vesting option for the 2016 season (if Benoit appears in at least 55 games during the 2015 season) or a $1.5 million buyout.

Despite the signing of RP Joaquin Benoit, the San Diego Padres are not actively looking to move CL Huston Street.
Fantasy Tip: Benoit and Street are likely to battle for the closer's job in 2014. Whoever emerges as the winner will be a strong fantasy play. The Padres aren't likely to blow out many teams, so there will be plenty of save opportunities.

The San Diego Padres agreed with free-agent RP Joaquin Benoit (Tigers) on a two-year deal worth around $15 million.
Fantasy Tip: Benoit will presumably battle Huston Street for the closer gig in 2014. We think Benoit has a good chance to win the job. Street, 30, has had numerous DL stints over the past few years, and his K/9 took a sharp decline in 2013. Benoit could be an upper-tier closer in PETCO Park. He has power stuff and thrived in his first real shot at closing last year. Monitor this situation in camp, but pounce on Benoit in the late-middle rounds of drafts.
