Tue, 31 Mar 2015 11:12:32 -0700

Angels | Josh Hamilton decision coming before OD

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 09:03:21 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton is expected to have a decision handed down on him by commissioner Rob Manfred by opening day on a possible suspension. Manfred said that "we are working toward a result" in the wake of Hamilton's relapse on a drug of abuse. Hamilton is also recovering from shoulder surgery, and his status for opening day was already in question.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton is expected to receive a suspension somewhere around 25 games for his relapse. His shoulder ailment was already expected to keep him out for around the first two months of the season, too, so he's an extremely risky fantasy baseball commodity. Avoiding him entirely might be the best strategy in standard 12-team mixed leagues.

Angels | Josh Hamilton announcement not rushed

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 10:43:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (shoulder) is currently rehabbing from surgery on his right AC joint in his shoulder, which new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said makes the timing of a decision on a suspension "a little more relaxed." Manfred said he will be deciding the length of a potential suspension for Hamilton from what sources are saying was a drug of abuse.

Fantasy Tip: There remains no timetable on when Manfred will make a decision on what could be as long as a 50-game suspension for Hamilton. That would be on top of the one-month plus that he's expected to miss because of his shoulder injury. That makes Hamilton an extremely risky fantasy commodity, and you shouldn't spend anything more than a late-round flier on him.

Angels | Josh Hamilton continues to rehab

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 09:56:33 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (shoulder) continues to rehab away from the team as the Angels and Hamilton await word on a possible suspension for a drug-related relapse in the offseason. General manager Jerry Dipoto said Hamilton's rehab is going well, and he's even taken some batting practice. However, the Angels may need to acquire another outfielder if Hamilton is suspended, but Dipoto currently feels comfortable with the group the Angels currently have.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton is expected to miss around the first month of the season, at least, due to his shoulder injury. Add a lengthy suspension on top of that (possibly), and you're looking at Hamilton being not worth the risk in fantasy baseball drafts. Maybe you take a chance on him as a late-round flier in really deep mixed leagues as a stash candidate, but that's about it.

Angels | Josh Hamilton taking BP

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 11:35:16 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (shoulder) is doing well in his physical therapy, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto. Hamilton has also taken at least one round of batting practice.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton is rehabbing from shoulder surgery away from the team in Texas, and he's expected to miss at least the first month of the season. He also has a lengthy suspension hanging over his head for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Hamilton is a huge risk in 2015 drafts, and he shouldn't be trusted as anything more than a late-round flier as a stash candidate.

Angels | Arbitrator to decide fate of Josh Hamilton

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 09:29:32 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton will have an arbitrator decide if he should enter rehab for drug use after a four-person disciplinary committee is deadlocked, according to a source. Hamilton met with MLB officials Feb. 25 regarding a relapse of substance abuse. He'll be owed only a full salary for 30 days and half his salary for the next 30 days if he's sent to rehab, and he's scheduled to make $25 million this year. If he's suspended and not in treatment, he won't be paid. MLB is deciding if they should classify Hamilton as a fourth-time offender of the drug policy. Violators face up to a full-season suspension for a fourth offense.

Fantasy Tip: Don't forget that Hamilton is also dealing with a shoulder injury that could keep him out of action for at least the first month of the season. His fantasy stock was dropping already, and news of his relapse has him in a free fall. A suspension seems likely, and who knows if he'll even play this season if he enters a rehab facility. Right now, Hamilton is even a super risky selection late in mixed league drafts.

Angels | Word on Josh Hamilton may come next week

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 10:40:24 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton isn't expected to have a suspension announced Friday, Feb. 27, so the team might have to wait until Monday, March 2, at the earliest. Hamilton met with MLB officials Wednesday, Feb. 25, regarding a drug-related relapse that he had in the offseason. Hamilton likely wouldn't be treated as a first-time offender if he violated the Joint Drug Agreement because he was on the Tampa Bay Rays' 40-man roster when he failed his first drug test in 2003. He could be facing a suspension from 25-50 games on a second positive test.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's 2015 fantasy baseball value is quickly plummeting. Not only do you have to worry about a suspension, but he's not expected to be back for a few months because of offseason shoulder surgery. He may still be worth a late-round pick for outfield depth, but tread carefully.

Angels | Josh Hamilton out at least 25 games

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 06:51:18 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton is likely to be suspended at least 25 games for breaching the league's drug policy. However, the league is unlikely to suspend him for a full season.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's fantasy value continues to plummet due to decline, injury and now this. It's possible you could draft him in the lower third of your draft right now. He still has talent to justify a selection in the middle rounds as an OF4 type.

Angels | Retirement an option for Josh Hamilton?

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:38:16 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton may need to retire from baseball. Roy Silver, one of Hamilton's closest friends and mentor in Hamilton's struggles with addiction, said the best thing for Hamilton is to retire from the sport. Silver last spoke with Hamilton in December, and his friend feared that something wasn't right and that Hamilton may have suffered a relapse.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's addiction problems have come to the forefront again while he's dealing with a shoulder injury that could keep him out a few months into the 2015 season. His fantasy value has taken a steep tumble because of it all, making him a very risky selection even at the end of mixed league drafts now.

Angels | Josh Hamilton had relapse

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 09:20:08 -0800

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton suffered a cocaine and alcohol relapse, and he met with MLB officials Wednesday, Feb. 25, about a disciplinary issue, according to a source. Hamilton told the league about his relapse, and Hamilton's father-in-law said Hamilton "hit a bump in the road, keep him in your prayers." Hamilton is facing a possible suspension. He had surgery earlier this month and wasn't slated to return until May. According to the agreement he made during his minor league suspension from 2003 to 2005, his drug violations can be taken into account in any discipline he might receive from the league.

Fantasy Tip: On top of his shoulder injury, a looming suspension doesn't bode well at all for Hamilton's fantasy value. There's a chance he may not even play at all in 2015. That'll likely drop him to a late-round pick, at best, in standard leagues. Matt Joyce's value should see a nice bump as a result.
