Angels | Josh Hamilton has surgery

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 16:41:09 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia confirmed that OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) underwent surgery on his thumb Friday, April 11.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton will be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks, and that's before he'll even be able to resume baseball activities. Don't expect to see him before June. Hamilton will likely need a lengthy rehab assignment to get his timing and swing back, too. This injury could hurt his power numbers for the rest of the year once he eventually makes his way back.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) will visit with a doctor Friday, April 11, to determine if he needs surgery on his left thumb.

Fantasy Tip: Surgery would seem to remain likely, since Hamilton suffered a complete tear of his UCL and capsule. However, until it's confirmed Friday, his owners can hold out a glimmer of hope for a shorter timetable.

Angels | Josh Hamilton to DL, J.B. Shuck recalled

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 15:26:20 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim placed OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, April 9, and recalled OF J.B. Shuck from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: Shuck had 400 at-bats and hit .300 last season in what was a big surprise for the Angels. He makes enough contact and is quick enough to make an impact again, but don't expect such a lofty BA. He'll likely split time with Collin Cowgill in the outfield with Hamilton sidelined.

Angels | Josh Hamilton has torn UCL in thumb

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 15:09:15 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) will have surgery on his left thumb after suffering a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament along with a torn capsule. He'll be out six to eight weeks. The Angels have recalled OF J.B. Shuck to replace Hamilton on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: This is a huge blow to Hamilton owners, but this came with the territory when buying the oft-injured outfielder. This is the type of injury that can wipe out an entire season, since thumb and wrist injuries to hitters can erase much of their power. Dropping Hamilton in shallow mixed leagues wouldn't be crazy if you don't have any more room on roster.

Shuck and Collin Cowgill will likely split time in the outfield with Hamilton out. Shuck, who doesn't have much pop but is an asset because of his speed, should be your first choice in AL-only leagues.

Angels | Josh Hamilton needs surgery

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 15:07:33 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) will need to have surgery on his left thumb. Hamilton injured his thumb sliding into first base headfirst Tuesday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what kind of surgery Hamilton needs or what type of injury he's dealing with, but he'll surely land on the disabled list. The timetable on his recovery is also unknown at this point. It's a frustrating development for his owners, since Hamilton was just starting to swing a hot stick.

Angels | Josh Hamilton to have MRI

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 04:07:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) had X-rays on his left thumb, which were negative. He'll have an MRI on it as well. He hurt the thumb diving back into first base Tuesday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: Thumb injuries are tricky and can really mess up a player's swing for an extended period of time. Be prepared to sit Hamilton for several days if the MRI is clean.

Angels | Josh Hamilton being more patient?

Mon, 07 Apr 2014 15:10:26 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton has six walks in the first seven games of the season. It took him 26 games to reach six walks in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's free-swinging ways has always been one of his biggest weaknesses at the plate, and it's kept his average down. His first week was nice statistically speaking, but it's a small sample size. His increased patience is encouraging, but he'll need to keep it up in order to make some real strides in his plate discipline.

Angels | Josh Hamilton aggressive at the plate

Tue, 18 Mar 2014 13:18:39 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton struck out 162 and 158 times in the last two seasons, and it was one of the reasons he had a disappointing slash lines of .250/.307/.432 last season. Hamilton swung early in the count during all of his at-bats in the spring game Monday, March 17, and he swung at the first pitch 42 percent of the time in 2013. Hamilton hit .281 with six home runs in 89 at-bats when he put the first pitch into play, but he was expanding the zone to pitches well off the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton's power skills remain, but he'll need to show much better plate discipline for his batting average to rebound. At this point in his career, he's once again a big risk, but it could pay off if he can stay healthy.

Tue, 18 Mar 2014 08:30:10 -0700

"He was running well and that's great to see," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's got to get out and play the outfield. We'll see how it goes, then. There are still some hurdles. We're not going to work too far ahead right now." Hamilton said he won't play Tuesday, March 18.
