Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) will undergo a hip resurfacing procedure next week, which is similar to hip replacement surgery. The surgery will have a longer recovery time than it takes to recover from bone spurs.

Updating a previous item, Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) will have surgery on his hip at the end of this week or early next week, and the recovery time is six to eight weeks before he can resume normal activities. "It's something that I just deal with," Lewis said. "I don't try to make it an issue. I just try to mask the pain as much as I can and for as long as I can and it just comes to the point that I feel like it's affecting my mechanics and not allowing me to compete at the big league level." Lewis went 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in his rehab starts, and his fastball command and velocity suffered due to inconsistent mechanics.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) will miss the rest of the year because he will undergo surgery to remove bone spurs in his right hip.
Fantasy Tip: Lewis should be ready to return next season. This buys Alexi Ogando a little more time to prove to the team he belongs to stay in the rotation, at least until Matt Harrison (back) is ready to come back.

Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando, who has gone as far as six innings just once in his five starts since May 10, might be the most in jeopardy of losing his rotation spot to make room for SP Colby Lewis (elbow), who is close to returning to the team. The team could keep Lewis on his rehab assignment through Aug. 16. SP Martin Perez is the only other pitcher in danger of being bumped out of the rotation.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (elbow) will make another rehab start for Double-A Frisco Saturday, Aug. 3, and he thinks he can return to the team after that.
Fantasy Tip: Lewis is available in most leagues, aside from some AL-only formats. He'll re-enter the rotation when he's ready, and he could push Martin Perez to the bullpen. It wouldn't hurt to stash Lewis in deep mixed leagues.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (elbow) allowed three runs and five hits over three innings in his second minor league rehab start Monday, July 22, for Double-A Frisco. He is hopeful of making his third rehab outing with Triple-A Round Rock this season. "I think I'm just building up arm strength still and definitely have got to start limiting pitching per inning and trying to get quicker outs," Lewis said.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (triceps) felt normal soreness following the first start of his renewed rehab assignment. He will pitch again on Monday, July 22.
Fantasy Tip: That may be a good sign, but Texas won't know for sure and probably isn't willing to depend on him as the trade deadline approaches. AL-only fantasy owners, and perhaps those in deep mixed leagues, should do the same: consider whatever Lewis contributes in 2013 a welcome surprise.
