Tampa Bay Rays executive Andrew Friedman isn't committing to RP Heath Bell as the team's closer next season, but Bell is confident he can come in and win the job.

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired RP Heath Bell from the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for RP Justin Choate, $500,000 and a player to be named. The Miami Marlins are still on the hook for $3.5 million of the $9 million owed to Bell. The Rays will pay Bell $5.5 million.
Fantasy Tip: Based on Bell's experience, we'd guess he's got a decent chance of competing for and winning the closer gig in Tampa. His main competitors will be Jake McGee and Joel Peralta. Amid inconsistencies with the Snakes he flashed signs of hope that he can bounce back to form, although his volatile ways will be scary in the AL East.

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said RP Heath Bell and David Hernandez have struggled this season because they are having difficulty locating their curveballs.

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers told the media on Thursday, July 11, that his team has no closer at this point. He suggested that situations will dictate whom the team uses in save situations in the club's final four contests before the All-Star break.
Fantasy Tip: Not even the Snakes like their options anymore. J.J. Putz was apparently sufficiently healthy to activate from the DL last week but not to pitch in the ninth once he blew a chance. Heath Bell proves that he's not the man for the job consistently enough. Matchups suggest that others are in the mix, but Tony Sipp is the only southpaw in the bullpen. Hey, maybe he'll get a shot. David Hernandez could get a look, too. Clearly, the D'backs are willing to let someone demonstrate his willingness to take a stranglehold here. Putz, Bell and Hernandez are the best bets, relatively speaking, and probably in that order. The club is exploring internal and external options, reportedly, too.

The Milwaukee Brewers have had ongoing discussions with the Arizona Diamondbacks about SP Yovani Gallardo, and RPs John Axford, Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez, according to major league sources. The Diamondbacks have a deep farm system, and it is conceivable they could acquire the ace of the Brewers and one of the relievers. The team needs help with several starters injured, and RP Heath Bell subbing for the shaky RP J.J. Putz at closer.

Updating a previous report, Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz is not ready to return to the closer's role after coming off the disabled list next week, according to manager Kirk Gibson. The club will continue to use RP Heath Bell in that role for now. The team is looking to use Putz earlier in games in order to increase his arm strength. Putz blew the save against the New York Mets Monday, July 1, the team's 16th blown save of the season.
Fantasy Tip: Putz needs to be stashed in deep enough leagues until he gets things straightened out. Look to reacquire Bell in all leagues as long as Putz is working in less-stressful innings out of the bullpen. Bell has been up and down this year, but he's reportedly ironed out another mechanical flaw recently.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said RP J.J. Putz will be taken out of the closer's role in favor of RP Heath Bell for the time being.
Fantasy Tip: The D-backs will let Putz work in lower-leverage situations in order to get his feet back under him and to regain some velocity. Bell was dropped in a wide range of leagues when Putz returned last week, so run to the waiver wire and pick him up if he's out there. It's unknown how long Bell will hold off Putz, but as long as Bell continues to pitch the ninth, he should be owned.

Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz (elbow) tossed his third straight scoreless inning for Triple-A Reno Monday, June 24.
Fantasy Tip: Putz could be activated from the disabled list later this week, and he's expected to be put immediately back into the closer's role. Heath Bell is back to his early season struggles and will likely go back to a setup role, although he could see the occasional save opp when Putz needs a rest.

Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz (elbow) said he felt good after a bullpen session Monday, June 17. His next step will be to go on a rehab assignment, which will start Friday, June 21.
Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if Putz will be returned to closing duties when he's healthy. Until we know more, those that picked up Heath Bell will have to hang onto him. If you're in need of saves and Putz is available, stash him now.
