Updating a previous report, New York Yankees 2B Brian Roberts (back) underwent an MRI for his sore lower back Sunday, April 13. The MRI was negative. He is expected to be re-evaluated in the next few days.
Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable on his return, but it sounds like he will at least miss another game or two, so if you have healthier alternatives in the upcoming fantasy week you should use them.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Sunday, April 13, that 2B Brian Roberts (back) complained of a lower back issue. The severity of the injury is unclear.
Fantasy Tip: And so it begins. Roberts is a talented player when he is healthy, but fantasy owners are starting to forget those days. For now, consider him day to day. If you have healthier alternatives heading into the upcoming week, use them. Roberts hasn't exactly shown a penchant for returning from injuries, nagging or otherwise.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said 2B Brian Roberts will start for the team at second base this season. "That is the plan, for him to be our second baseman," Girardi said. "I know he hasn't played a full season in the last few years, he's obviously a guy who has some age on him too, but my plan is to run him out there every day." 3B Kelly Johnson is slated to at least platoon at third base. 2B Brendan Ryan is also a candidate to see time at the keystone.

The New York Yankees are highly unlikely to bid on free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox), according to major league officials in contact with Yankees officials. The team may need a contingency plan to SS Derek Jeter as he comes back from a serious injury and to replace 2B Robinson Cano and 3B Alex Rodriguez. General manager Brian Cashman seems content on starting the year with INFs Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson, Eduardo Nunez and Brendan Ryan providing infield depth. The Yankees are not expected to stretch their budget much further after going past their self-imposed $189 million payroll limit.

The New York Yankees may decide to go with a platoon arrangement at second base this year between 2Bs Brian Roberts and Dean Anna. Anna is a career minor leaguer and hits from the left side. He had an .892 OPS in the Pacific Coast League last season. Roberts is a switch hitter and owns a .716 OPS against lefties and .782 against righties. 2B Kelly Johnson may not be defensively sound enough to play the position. The Yankees know that they need to protect Roberts, though, to keep him healthy over the course of the season.

The New York Yankees agreed with free-agent 2B Brian Roberts (Orioles) on a one-year deal worth about $2 million, pending a physical.
Fantasy Tip: Roberts finally offered a glimmer of hope that he's past the concussion issues that derailed his career. However, he only stole three bags in 265 at-bats last season. He figures to be part of a platoon with Kelly Johnson. However, his value is very minimal - probably limited to AL-only leagues.

The New York Yankees are considering several veteran free-agent options, including 1B Mark Reynolds (Yankees), 2B Brian Roberts (Orioles) and 3B Michael Young (Dodgers).

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in re-signing 2B Brian Roberts to a one-year deal. If they don't, they think 2B Ryan Flaherty is ready for a bigger role. "The way they do the metrics they profile him out as hitting 20 home runs at second base and playing pretty good defense. That's a pretty good combo. We have Jemile (Weeks), we have the potential of (prospect) Jonathan Schoop. First and foremost, we have the potential of Brian Roberts. So, I like our options," manager Buck Showalter said.
