MLB | Cliff Lee done?

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 06:15:47 -0800

Free-agent SP Cliff Lee's (Phillies) agent, Darek Braunecker, told's Ken Rosenthal Tuesday, Feb. 23, that Lee doesn't anticipate pitching again.

Fantasy Tip: Lee would be an attractive flyer late in drafts if Lee changes his mind. Otherwise, it was a brilliant career for the lefty.

Orioles | Baltimore hesitant on pitchers

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 08:43:57 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles do not want to give up a first-round pick in order to sign free-agent SP Yovani Gallardo (Rangers), according to general manager Dan Duquette. They also haven't made an offer to free-agent SP Doug Fister (Nationals) and don't think free-agent SP Cliff Lee (elbow) is ready to pitch.

Fantasy Tip: Fister is probably the the most intriguing pitcher of the three because of his heavy ground-ball profile as depth for your deep mixed rotation, but a move to the hitter-friendly environment of Camden Yards would kill a lot of optimism.

MLB | Cliff Lee still wants to play

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:23:44 -0800

Free-agent SP Cliff Lee (Phillies) still wants to play in 2016 and wants to sign with a strong contender, but not many know about his progress from elbow surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Lee is a risk and should be avoided in all but very deep fantasy leagues, where a pitcher like this can be stashed away without much in the way of penalty to your team.

Marlins | MIA interested in veteran starters

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 17:21:44 -0800

The Miami Marlins are expected to attend the workouts of free-agent SPs Cliff Lee (Phillies) and Tim Lincecum (Giants).

Fantasy Tip: It's difficult to tell whether the Fish are seriously interested in the injury-plagued veterans or just doing their due diligence. The 37-year-old Lee missed the entire 2015 season because of a left elbow injury but has already resumed throwing. Lincecum, 31, is recovering from left hip surgery and is expected to throw for teams in mid-January. Both pitchers should be viewed as late-round fliers in deep mixed leagues regardless of where they wind up.

MLB | Cliff Lee garnering plenty of interest

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 15:52:53 -0800

Free-agent SP Cliff Lee (Phillies) is receiving interest from 15 teams.

Fantasy Tip: Lee didn't pitch at all in 2015, and he made just 13 starts in 2014, so entering his age-36 season, there is a lot of unknown with the veteran. His draft stock will likely be low enough that there won't be a lot of risk in grabbing him as a mid- to late-round flier this spring. Stay tuned for updates and monitor his performance leading into the season.

MLB | Cliff Lee cleared to throw

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 10:36:42 -0800

Free-agent SP Cliff Lee (elbow) has received clearance and has begun throwing this offseason. He could pitch in 2016 if he finds the right fit.

Fantasy Tip: Lee is an excellent late-round flyer if he latches on with a team because he could still have something left in the tank if he's healthy.

Phillies | PHI declines option on Cliff Lee

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 14:10:35 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies have declined to exercise their 2016 option on SP Cliff Lee (elbow), who has missed the entire season due to an elbow injury. The option was worth $27.5 million but Lee will receive a $12.5 million buyout instead.

Fantasy Tip: Interim general manager Scott Proefrock characterized the move as "fairly obvious." There is an excellent chance that the 37-year-old southpaw will retire instead of attempting to latch on with another team.

Phillies | Cliff Lee done for season

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 17:56:39 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) has been shut down for the remainder of the season, although he feels better now than he did earlier in the year.

Fantasy Tip: If the Phils had been in contention, there was a slight chance that Lee ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) could have returned as a reliever later this year. He could attempt to resume throwing during the winter, although there's also a strong possibility that he could retire.

Phillies | Cliff Lee won't have surgery

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 13:46:35 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) will once again try to rehab and avoid surgery, the team announced Monday, March 16. Lee has been shut down from throwing and has been placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: At age 36, it's hard to imagine Lee pitching through his condition and avoiding Tommy John surgery, which would likely end his career. His condition makes him one of the riskiest fantasy baseball players in 2015. Avoiding him like the plague in drafts is probably the smartest strategy.

Phillies | Cliff Lee still feeling pain

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:38:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee (elbow) said he threw off a mound Wednesday, March 11, and continues to feel pain in his left elbow. Lee is hoping the pain subsides soon.

Fantasy Tip: If the pain doesn't subside soon, Lee's 2015 season, and possibly his career, could be in real jeopardy. The news that Lee is dealing with a torn ligament in his left elbow is troubling news for those in fantasy baseball drafts this week. The safest route would be to avoid Lee at all costs in the early rounds. He might be worth a late-round pick as a stash option if he can somehow pitch through the injury this year, but it seems unlikely for a pitcher of his age.
