Reds | Brandon Phillips not subject of trade talks

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 15:57:58 -0800

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips has not been the subject of any trade talks in the offseason since talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He appears to be the starter for the Reds entering 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Phillips should be one of the key Reds entering the season with some of the trades that have been made. He should be considered a decent pickup on draft day as his speed has picked up once again.

Reds | Brandon Phillips staying in Cincinnati?

Mon, 28 Dec 2015 15:13:13 -0800

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips rejected the potential trade to the Washington Nationals, and president of baseball operations Walt Jocketty is not overly optimistic Phillips will be traded during the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Phillips is a low- to mid-range second base option entering 2016. His 23 stolen bases last season were the most he has swiped since the 2009 campaign, and he had his best slash line (.294/.328/.395) of the past three years. Still, entering his age-35 campaign, there is little upside for additional improvement, and statistical decline looms over Phillips.

Nationals | Nats moving on from Brandon Phillips

Sat, 19 Dec 2015 12:48:29 -0800

Contrary to previous reports, the Washington Nationals appear unlikely to acquire 2B Brandon Phillips in a trade from the Cincinnati Reds and the club is now pursuing other options, according to multiple sources. The team could be interested in pursuing free-agent 2B Howie Kendrick (Dodgers) or improving their second base situation via trade. However, they appear unlikely to go after free-agent INF Daniel Murphy (Mets).

Fantasy Tip: In order for the deal to have been completed, Phillips would have had to waive his 10-five rights. He should be viewed as a midrange option at the keystone position who is capable of hitting for power, driving in runs and stealing bases, although his numbers are likely to decline somewhat due to age, nagging injuries and lack of protection in the lineup.

Nationals | Brandon Phillips deal likely to happen

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 11:56:39 -0800

Updating an earlier report, Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is likely to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a trade to the Washington Nationals, which has been reportedly agreed upon. A source said there is an "85-90%" chance Phillips will waive his no-trade clause.

Fantasy Tip: BP's dwindling power will suffer more away from the Great American Ball Park. Of his 12 homers last season, only three were on the road. He'll still score runs, steal bases and drive a few in, and he's a midrange fantasy second baseman.

Nationals | Brandon Phillips deal to Nats close

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 05:45:46 -0800

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is part of a deal agreed upon to send him to the Washington Nationals. Phillips must accept the deal and waive his 10-five rights for the deal to be completed.

Fantasy Tip: BP would join a very talented lineup, but his dwindling power will suffer more away from the Great American Ball Park. Of his 12 homers last season, only three were on the road. He'll still score runs, steal bases and drive a few in, and he's a midrange fantasy second baseman.

Nationals | Nats eyeing Brandon Phillips

Tue, 15 Dec 2015 17:17:00 -0800

The Washington Nationals are discussing a trade for Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips, according to major league sources. A trade would reunite Phillips with new Washington manager Dusty Baker. However, the Nationals need to convince Phillips to waive his full no-trade clause as a player with 10 years of major league service and five straight with the same team. Phillips is owed $13 million next year and $14 million in 2017. The Reds would likely receive prospects for Phillips.

Fantasy Tip: Phillips, already a declining player at age 34, would be leaving one of the more hitter-friendly ballparks in the big leagues. He hit .294 (173-for-588) with 12 home runs and 70 RBI last year. His 23 stolen bases were key last year, but as he ages, expect his stolen base totals to recede. Phillips remains fantasy relevant as a consistent producer at second base once the bigger names come off the board.

Diamondbacks | Brandon Phillips wanted by D-Backs

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 06:35:56 -0800

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is drawing interest from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Phillips had a bounce-back season with the .294 average and 23 steals. He'll be 35 midseason, but he's still in the upper-middle portion of the position in fantasy.

Diamondbacks | Arizona discussing Brandon Phillips

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 10:33:54 -0800

The Arizona Diamondbacks are discussing a potential trade for Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips that would involve 2B Aaron Hill, according to major league sources. However, Phillips has the right to veto any trade as a player with 10 years of major league service and five with the same team. The discussions haven't been serious yet, though, according to a source. The deal could advance to include more players and financial exchange. Phillips is under contract for $13 million next year but also is due $14 million in 2017, which could be a road block to a deal.

Fantasy Tip: At age 34, Phillips is a declining player that would be leaving one of the best hitting environments in baseball for a more neutral location. He's no longer a lock to hit 15 home runs anymore and probably will struggle to hover around .300 again in 2016.

Reds | Brandon Phillips out again vs. Cubs

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 09:50:37 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 29. 2B Ivan De Jesus is starting at the keystone and is hitting second against Chicago Cubs SP Dan Haren Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Phillips ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) in all fantasy formats, and with him now sitting out consecutive games, there might be more to the story and a potential injury. Check back for updates. De Jesus ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has a .651 OPS through 54 plate appearances in September, and he is nothing more than a flier at FantasyScore Tuesday.

Reds | Brandon Phillips out of lineup

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 11:07:39 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is not in the starting lineup Monday, Sept. 28. 2B Ivan De Jesus is starting at the keystone and is hitting second against Washington Nationals SP Max Scherzer.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Scherzer, the Nats' ace, has struggled some in the second half of the season, De Jesus ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is a weaker daily option that should be avoided this afternoon.
