Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon put on DL

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 10:55:05 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right intercostal strain Tuesday, June 14. RP Matt Belisle (calf) was activated from the DL in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Despite saving 16 of his 18 chances this year, Paps was very shaky with a 3.28 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 2.9 walks per nine. Because there's still a decent chance he'll be in the mix for saves when he's back, you'll probably want to stash him at least in deeper formats. Intercostal injuries are tricky, so don't be surprised if Papelbon is out beyond 15 days. Shawn Kelley needs to be owned everywhere now. He pitched 1 2/3 innings for his first save Monday night and has been a much better reliever than Papelbon this season. Kelley could continue seeing saves opportunities even after Papelbon returns to full health.

Nationals | Matt Belisle continues to rehab

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 19:57:22 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Matt Belisle (calf) has worked nine games for Class AAA Syracuse through Sunday, June 12, as part of a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. He has posted a 4.09 ERA over 11 innings during the stint.

Fantasy Tip: Belisle is worth a look in deeper NL-only rotisserie formats which use true middle relievers. Other than that, he can mostly be avoided in all other formats.

Nationals | Matt Belisle placed on disabled list

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 19:36:40 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals RP Matt Belisle (calf) was placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining his right calf during a relief appearance versus the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday, April 26. RP Sammy Solis was called up from Class AAA Syracuse to replace him on the 25-man roster.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, Belisle is valuable in deep NL-only rotisserie leagues that use categories such as ERA, WHIP and holds. The 35-year-old right-hander has posted a 1.50 ERA through the first seven games of the year.

Nationals | Matt Belisle leaves early

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 22:45:33 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Matt Belisle (calf) left his relief appearance Tuesday, April 26, against the Philadelphia Phillies after facing one batter in the eighth inning due to a strained right calf.

Fantasy Tip: Belisle is only worth using in deeper NL-only rotisserie formats for help in the ERA and WHIP category, and leagues with advanced scoring systems which reward holds.

Rockies | Matt Belisle making emergency start

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 15:09:45 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Matt Belisle will make an emergency start in place of SP Franklin Morales Friday, Aug. 15, against the Cincinnati Reds.

Fantasy Tip: Belisle hasn't started a game since 2008, so he should be avoided fantasy. Remove Morales from all lineups, too.

Rockies | Will not change Matt Belisle's role

Sat, 26 Apr 2014 08:38:19 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he will not change how he uses RP Matt Belisle even though Belisle has a 6.30 ERA. "I don't think it's going to change," Weiss said. "I will use Matty anytime from the sixth inning on. Typically, I don't like to pigeonhole a guy, saying a guy will pitch 'in this inning.' I let the game dictate some of those things."

Rockies | Looking for setup help

Mon, 17 Mar 2014 00:47:17 -0700

The Colorado Rockies are looking at the trade market for a right-handed setup option. CL LaTroy Hawkins is likely to cede the closer role to RP Rex Brothers at some point, which would make Hawkins available (along with RP Matt Belisle) as a late-inning righty. Another source indicates the club prefers to give RP Chad Bettis or RP Chris Martin a chance before pursuing a trade.

Rockies | Matt Belisle excited for chance

Sun, 16 Feb 2014 18:35:05 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP Matt Belisle is excited about the increased competition heading into the season. The team added several arms to the back end of the bullpen during the offseason. Belisle, who is just one of two pitchers to appear more than 70 times in each of the past four seasons, will compete with RPs Wilton Lopez and Adam Ottavino for a role in the bullpen from the right side. Belisle expressed that he is "extremely fortunate" that manager Walt Weiss shows confidence in him. He also said that many of his late-season struggles came from predictable patterns, especially against familiar hitters. He plans to use his changeup to combat that.
