Rockies | Justin Morneau headed for rehab stint

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 11:25:06 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment at Class AA New Britain Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: He's likely to play through the weekend and be evaluated. Morneau ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) could be a factor the last month of the season, but he has such a lengthy history of concussions it's hard to tell what we'll see out of him.

Rockies | Justin Morneau does baseball activities

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 10:12:08 -0700

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (neck, concussion) fielded grounders at first base and did some jogging Friday, Aug. 14, in addition to taking on-field batting practice. He said he will go through his "regular baseball routine" during the team's homestead before determining his next course of action.

Fantasy Tip: No official timetable exists for Morneau's ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) return, although he is hopeful that he will be able to resume playing this season. Ben Paulsen ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) will continue to see the bulk of the action at first base in his absence.

Rockies | Justin Morneau takes batting practice

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 18:28:35 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (neck, concussion) took live batting practice Friday, Aug. 14. He had been hitting off a tee and in an indoor bating cage but is not traveling with the team.

Fantasy Tip: This was Morneau's ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) first time taking on-field batting practice since landing on the disabled list in May. He remains hopeful that he can return to action before the end of the season. For the foreseeable future, Ben Paulsen ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) will continue to see the bulk of the playing time at first base for Colorado.

Rockies | Justin Morneau could be done for year

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 14:21:00 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (neck, concussion) participated in infield drills Wednesday, July 22, but manager Walt Weiss said he was "not sure" if Morneau would return this season.

Fantasy Tip: Morneau hasn't played since Wednesday, May 13, and at this point, he should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation stash. The Rockies are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline, so there is no reason to rush Morneau back to action.

Rockies | Justin Morneau moved to 60-day DL

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 09:16:07 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday, July 7.

Fantasy Tip: Morneau's history with concussions is well-documented, and there remains no timetable for his return. Continue stashing him everywhere and hope for the best. As he remains out, Ben Paulsen ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) continues to see consistent playing time, and he's useful in deep mixed leagues for his power potential, especially when playing at Coors Field.

Rockies | Justin Morneau unsure of return

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 09:06:23 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) has been in contact with the team, but he is unsure when he will be able to return after suffering a concussion while diving for a ground ball May 13, according to manager Walt Weiss. Morneau also suffered a cervical neck sprain on the same play. He has suffered multiple concussions in his career, missing extensive time in 2010 and 2011 with the Minnesota Twins.

Fantasy Tip: Stay patient with Morneau and stash him in a DL spot, but given his extensive history with concussions, prepare for the worst. Ben Paulsen ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) and Wilin Rosario ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) have been filling in at first base, with Paulsen the seeing more starts and being the more attractive FantasyScore option with upside for his power.

Rockies | Justin Morneau moved to 15-day DL

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 09:25:20 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) was moved from the 7-day concussion disabled list to the 15-day disabled list over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Morneau's owners should be pretty worried given his extension history with concussions while playing for the Minnesota Twins. With Morneau out, Ben Paulsen ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has hit .350 (14-for-40) with three home runs and eight RBI. Wilin Rosario ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is also seeing some time at first, but Paulsen has been the more effective value play at FantasyScore, and he has more home run potential.

Cardinals | Options to replace Matt Adams?

Thu, 28 May 2015 07:31:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (leg) is likely done for the season, which has fueled speculation that the Cardinals could have interest in Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. Milwaukee Brewers 1B Adam Lind and Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau may also be available via trade, Rosenthal writes. Lind has a club option after 2015, and Morneau has a mutual option. The Phillies are willing to cover the majority of Howard's remaining $50 million-plus contract, although the Cardinals seem to have little interest in impeding Adams in 2016. It is unknown if Howard would waive his 10-and-5 rights to accept a trade to St. Louis.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals may try to get by with 1B Mark Reynolds, but a trade is entirely possible to land a complementary bat for matchups against right-handed pitchers. Keep an eye on the situation in the short term.

Rockies | Justin Morneau won't return when eligible

Thu, 21 May 2015 11:44:34 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (concussion) will not return to the team when he's eligible to come off the 7-day disabled list, and he'll be at least a few more days, according to manager Walt Weiss.

Fantasy Tip: You have to be at least a bit concerned with Morneau given his history with concussions in his time with the Minnesota Twins. In the meantime, Wilin Rosario ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) has been a real nice value play since being recalled from the minors. He's hitting .293 (12-for-41) with a home run and five RBI in May.

Rockies | Justin Morneau to 7-day DL

Sat, 16 May 2015 14:17:29 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (neck, concussion) was placed on the 7-day disabled list with a neck strain and concussion symptoms.

Fantasy Tip: This could be awful news as concussion problems ended his MVP peak years and threatened his career. Hold onto him in traditional leagues for now, but the team will need to be very careful with him if he has a concussion.
