Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario will see work at first base this spring, even though the team can use OF Michael Cuddyer there to spell 1B Justin Morneau against tough left-handed pitchers during the season. Rosario started at first three times last year and made two errors there.

Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said the team had shown interest in 1B Justin Morneau before he signed with the Colorado Rockies. Melvin added that the trade market for first basemen was very thin this offseason, hinting that he had had discussions with the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers but that they were unwilling to make moves.

Colorado Rockies 1B Justin Morneau signed a two-year, $12.5-million deal that breaks down to a $5 million salary in 2014, $6.75 million in 2015 and a $9 million mutual option for 2016. The option can be voided with a $750,000 buyout. Morneau also can make an additional $500,000 this season if he reaches 550 at-bats and finishes the season on the active 25-man roster. There are also boosts for finishing in the top-10 in the MVP voting and standard postseason bonuses. Morneau is no hurry to be traded either. He must be paid a $375,000 assignment bonus if dealt.
