Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) ran on an anti-gravity treadmill Monday, March 2, and took 30 swings off a tee from both sides of the plate.
Fantasy Tip: V-Mart could be ready by opening day, depending on how his knee responds to workouts this spring. He dodged a bullet with his knee injury, and he should remain a fine first base target in the middle rounds of standard 12-team leagues. Be prepared for a slow start to the season, though, as he gets his legs underneath him.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) will report to spring training Monday, March 2, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Ausmus said Martinez may be able to swing a bat when he reports and could hit some soft toss.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is working his way back from knee surgery, and it looks like he may be ready for the start of the season. Owners should monitor his progress during spring training to see if he suffers any setbacks. Martinez should be a solid option for owners in mixed leagues, but they should lower their expectations since he could struggle early in the season if he does not receive many at bats this spring.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) is making such progress following knee surgery that Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski predicted confidently Martinez will be ready by opening day.
Fantasy Tip: Even if Martinez missed the high end of his projected four- to six-week recovery timetable by doctors from surgery Feb. 10, he'd still be ready by opening day. That said, an earlier return would provide Martinez more spring training at-bats to shake off the rust and hit the ground running when games count in April. Monitor Martinez's recovery since a return later in the spring would warrant moving him down draft boards.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez (knee) will continue to work out on his own away from the team when full-squad workouts begin in spring training next week.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is scheduled to miss four to six weeks, meaning he could be ready right around opening day. However, he'll miss all of spring action, and he could be primed for a slow start to the season. As a result, you'll need to drop him in your fantasy baseball rankings and be prepared for a slow start.

Detroit Tigers DH/1B Victor Martinez could be used at catcher early in the 2015 season. If 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle) is ready for the beginning of the season, Martinez will be used at catcher during the road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates April 13-15. If Cabrera is out, V-Mart will be at first base. The Tigers play seven more games in National League parks without the designated hitter in 2015. Martinez could catch in a couple of those to keep his bat in the lineup.
