Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan said his arm felt livelier during his appearance Thursday, April 17, after he dealt with dead arm earlier in the month. "My velocity is what it's going to be, but moreso I was locating where I wanted to. But it did feel like it was a lot livelier. There's different 91s, different 92s, but today, at least finishing pitches, it felt like it was jumping out of my hand better," Nathan said.

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan blew the save against the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday, April 9, allowing three runs in the ninth inning.
Fantasy Tip: Nathan is trying to pitch through a "dead-arm" phase, which explains his rough outings of late. Although it's always tough to bench one of your closers this early in the season, this would be a situation that would warrant it. There's no indication that Brad Ausmus is considering any kind of committee approach, but if he does, Al Alburquerque, Phil Coke and Joba Chamberlain would likely be involved.

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (arm) said he's dealing with a "dead arm" right now. "Unfortunately there's no secret to getting through it quicker," Nathan said. "It's just one of those things that will hit guys throughout the course of a year and you never know when it is going to be or how long it is going to last but all you can do is continue to throw and throw through it and, hopefully, one day you come there and the ball is coming out of your hand a lot cleaner and with a little more zip on it." Nathan has allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings this year and blew his first save chance April 2.
Fantasy Tip: The Tigers haven't given any indication that they'll shut Nathan down, but don't be surprised if he's rested during the team's next save chance. Al Alburquerque and Phil Coke could be used if that's the case.

The Detroit Tigers agreed with free-agent CL Joe Nathan (Rangers) on a two-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Nathan had a great year with the Rangers last season with a 1.39 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 43 saves in 46 opportunities. One thing you shouldn't overlook, though, is his declining strikeout rate. It was 11.67 in 2009 before his elbow injury, and it dipped to 10.91 in 2012 and 10.16 in 2013. At 39 years old, it's fair to expect it to dip a little more this year. However, he'll have ample save opportunities in Detroit. He has been great in Comerica Park with a 1.52 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP lifetime.
The Rangers will likely look to Neftali Feliz or Joakim Soria to fill their closer void. Both are coming back from injuries and have been high-end closers in the past. Both have the potential to be again.
