Tigers | Joakim Soria thriving as closer

Fri, 17 Apr 2015 18:50:41 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joakim Soria is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and four saves in four chances since taking over as the closer for RP Joe Nathan (elbow).

Fantasy Tip: Soria should be owned in all leagues at this point, and given Nathan's shaky health and performance the last couple of years, Soria could definitely find himself pitching in the ninth inning a lot this season.

Tigers | Joe Nathan will return to closer role

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 16:11:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) is expected to return to the closer role when healthy, according to manager Brad Ausmus. "That's the plan," Ausmus said Wednesday, April 15. "We'll see what happens, but that's the plan. The most important thing is to get him back. Our bullpen is stronger with Joe in it."

Fantasy Tip: Ausmus' endorsement is encouraging for Nathan owners, however those who added speculative shares of Joakim Soria shouldn't cut bait upon Nathan's return. Nathan, 40, has a lot of miles on his arm, and with an arm injury already on the books for 2015, he is at risk of losing his closing gig in short order.

Tigers | Joe Nathan throws from 120 feet

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 13:47:24 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) threw from 120 feet Wednesday, April 15, and said he was "pleasantly surprised."

Fantasy Tip: While Nathan is worth stashing in a DL slot, there is no guarantee he'll return to the closer role. Joakim Soria has three saves and five games finished in Nathan's absence, and Soria has the better arm and pitching arsenal. Soria should be owned in all formats. Continue to check back for updates on Nathan's return timeline and for any announcements on his role when he does rejoin the club.

Tigers | Joe Nathan still not throwing

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 21:32:36 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) still has a few more days of treatment before he is allowed to resume throwing. He remains on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right elbow flexor.

Fantasy Tip: With Nathan on the shelf it is former closer Joakim Soria getting a chance to lock down save chances. If Soria pitches well it wouldn’t be shocking to see him remain in the closer’s role even when Nathan is healthy.

Tigers | Joe Nathan has Grade 1 strain

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 11:36:53 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) said he was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of the flexor in his right elbow. Nathan isn't too concerned about his injury and plans to resume throwing when the tightness is gone.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan was a popular pick to lose his closing job early in the 2015 season, but most didn't expect it to happen this soon. Stash him in a DL spot. Joakim Soria is likely already owned in most fantasy leagues, but if he's not, scoop him up immediately. Soria could easily stay in the closer's role when Nathan returns.

Tigers | Joe Nathan to the DL

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 13:46:33 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) was put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, April 8, with a right elbow flexor strain, according to general manager Dave Dombrowski. Manager Brad Ausmus said the plan is for Nathan to get the closing job back when he's healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan's aging right arm was a concern for many fantasy owners, and his decreased velocity in recent seasons made him vulnerable in the ninth often. Joakim Soria will move into the closer's role with Nathan shelved, and he should be owned in all fantasy leagues.

Tigers | Joe Nathan dealing with nail issue

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:37:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (finger) was pitching with a thumbnail issue Thursday, March 26, according to Brad Ausmus. Nathan will take the next three days off from pitching.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan's nail issue shouldn't keep him from being ready on opening day. Ausmus also suggested that Nathan doesn't have competition in the closer's role, at least not yet. Nathan still remains on shaky ground in the eyes of fantasy owners as a late-round closing source. If you can, try to handcuff Joakim Soria to the veteran pitcher.

Tigers | No competition for Joe Nathan

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:32:42 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan has no competition for the closer role heading into the season, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: At age 40, Nathan is losing steam and velocity as the Tigers' closer. Many owners are skeptical of owning him for fear of injury or demotion early in the year. You can't argue with the job security Detroit is giving him to start, though, which makes him worth a late-round pick. Handcuffing him with Joakim Soria would be the ideal situation.

Tigers | Joe Nathan feels good about arm slot

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 16:34:38 -0800

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan lowered him arm slot in the second half of last season. He dropped his ERA from 6.37 in April, May and June to 3.18 in July, August and September. Nathan has worked on the lower arm-slot delivery all winter, and he says,"it's allowed me to come into camp more comfortable in that slot." In addition to being comfortable with his delivery, Nathan reports his offseason work with a personal trainer has "changed my body composition a lot." Tigers manager Brad Ausmus says he's convinced Nathan's troubles last year were "more of an aberration and less about the aging process."

Fantasy Tip: Nathan's leash will be shorter as the Tigers closer with the presence of former Royals and Rangers closer Joakim Soria in the bullpen. That said, Nathan's role as the closer keeps him in the lower-tier among saves options entering this season. Gamers that draft Nathan would be wise to keep an eye on his spring results with his lower arm slot and new diet, and selecting Soria as a handcuff might be worthwhile as well.

Tigers | Joe Nathan has closer job for 2015

Thu, 16 Oct 2014 04:18:56 -0700

Detroit Tigers CL Joe Nathan will have the closer job going into spring training, but general manager Dave Dombrowski said he will need to "perform up to the capabilities required" to keep the job.
