Tigers | Joe Nathan plans on returning

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 14:28:06 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) said he plans to attempt to return from Tommy John surgery after being diagnosed with tears of the ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator in his right elbow. He has yet to schedule his surgery, but he's been told to expect a longer timetable for recovery than a typical Tommy John procedure, because of the flexor tear. Nathan won't pick up a ball for roughly eight months. He has a $10 million option for next year, but the Tigers can buy him out for $1 million.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be a very tough uphill battle for Nathan to continue his major league career. Back in Detroit, Joakim Soria's path to remain the closer for the rest of the year just became much easier. He could eventually become a top-15 fantasy closer in 2015.

Tigers | Joe Nathan update

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 07:44:17 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery after tests revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor pronator tendon.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is expected to discuss his plans on whether he intends to continue his career at a later date. The torn flexor tendon will likely add a few months to his recovery timetable, which is usually six to nine months for a reliever.

Tigers | Joe Nathan's season over

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 07:01:42 -0700

Updating previous reports, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament and a torn tendon in his right elbow. He will miss the remainder of the season.

Fantasy Tip: It might stick a fork in his career as well. Joakim Soria will continue to receive save opportunities in light of the news.

Tigers | Joe Nathan felt pop in throwing arm

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 13:37:09 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) said he felt a pop in his right arm Wednesday, April 22. "It feels like I broke my arm," Nathan said. "I never have broken my arm, but I would assume this is what it feels like." Nathan and manager Brad Ausmus did not comment on the severity of the setback or a recovery timeline, though.

Fantasy Tip: Joakim Soria's hold on the ninth-inning role appears firmer than ever with the news, and his fantasy value is soaring. Nathan is still worth stashing, but the 40-year-old reliever might be a long way from returning to the mound. Check back for updates, as more details should surface in the coming days.

Tigers | Joe Nathan suffers setback

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 09:44:40 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) left his rehab outing early with Triple-A Toledo Wednesday, April 22, with an undisclosed injury.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear exactly what Nathan injured, but it doesn't look good, and he appeared to be in a lot of pain. It may be even more of an uphill battle for the 40-year-old to make it back to Detroit now, which further increases the value of current closer Joakim Soria. Continue to stash Nathan in all formats, for now.

Tigers | Joe Nathan to rehab Wednesday

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 13:51:08 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) will make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Toledo Wednesday, April 22.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan could come off the disabled list Friday if he doesn't have any setbacks in his rehab outing tomorrow. There's no guarantee Nathan will be given the closer's role back immediately, especially since Joakim Soria has gotten the job done in his absence. Stay tuned.

Tigers | Joe Nathan throws full bullpen session

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 15:05:43 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) threw a full bullpen session Monday, April 20, and he is eligible to return from the disabled list Wednesday, April 22.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Brad Ausmus has said Nathan will return to the closer role when healthy, so Nathan should be owned in all formats. Still, at 40, Nathan will likely have a short leash, especially with Joakim Soria (four saves, 1.59 ERA and 1.05 WHIP) pitching extremely well.

Tigers | Joe Nathan close to returning

Sun, 19 Apr 2015 11:42:52 -0700

Detroit Tigers CL Joe Nathan (elbow) threw 15 pitches off a mound Saturday, April 18, and said that he felt "awesome" afterwards. He is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday, April 20, and could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Wednesday, April 22, if all goes well.

Fantasy Tip: Nathan is expected to regain his closing job when he returns from the disabled list, with Joakim Soria moving back to a setup role. However, given Nathan's injury history, Soria owners would be wise to hang on to him in case he is sidelined again.

Tigers | Joakim Soria thriving as closer

Fri, 17 Apr 2015 18:50:41 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joakim Soria is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and four saves in four chances since taking over as the closer for RP Joe Nathan (elbow).

Fantasy Tip: Soria should be owned in all leagues at this point, and given Nathan's shaky health and performance the last couple of years, Soria could definitely find himself pitching in the ninth inning a lot this season.

Tigers | Joe Nathan will return to closer role

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 16:11:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (elbow) is expected to return to the closer role when healthy, according to manager Brad Ausmus. "That's the plan," Ausmus said Wednesday, April 15. "We'll see what happens, but that's the plan. The most important thing is to get him back. Our bullpen is stronger with Joe in it."

Fantasy Tip: Ausmus' endorsement is encouraging for Nathan owners, however those who added speculative shares of Joakim Soria shouldn't cut bait upon Nathan's return. Nathan, 40, has a lot of miles on his arm, and with an arm injury already on the books for 2015, he is at risk of losing his closing gig in short order.
