Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta could start swinging

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 18:34:52 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) hopes to be cleared to resume swinging a bat within the next two days.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta landed on the disabled list earlier this week because of continued discomfort in his surgically-repaired left thumb but the possibility of him resuming hitting soon is a good sign. INF Jedd Gyorko is likely to see the bulk of the action at the hot corner while Peralta remains sidelined and he's worthy of consideration for NL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta to DL

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 13:49:45 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with more discomfort in his surgically-repaired left thumb. He had hit .221 since coming off the DL on June 7. 2B Jedd Gyorko is in the lineup at third base Tuesday, July 19, against the San Diego Padres.

Fantasy Tip: Look for Gyorko to get more at-bats at this position, along with SS Greg Garcia. Gyorko (.252-8-22) has been warming up at the plate as of late and has solid fantasy value in DFS and deeper NL and mixed formats. Garcia (.321-2-10) only has four hits in his last seven games and a lower fantasy value than Gyorko.

Cardinals | No timeline for Jhonny Peralta

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 10:40:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) does not have a timeline to return to the lineup, according to manager Mike Matheny. Matheny noted Peralta likely sustained the injury during a checked swing or swing and miss, which aggravated a "hot spot" in his surgically repaired thumb.

"It just kind of keeps showing up," Matheny said. "Trying to get a couple steps ahead and then something will happen. That's a violent movement, especially when you start talking about your hands going through the swing mechanics. Something we're going to have to keep working our way through."

Fantasy Tip: The nature of the injury is concerning given how vital a hitter's hands are to his success at the plate. Plus, Peralta is clearly not completely healed from the injury. He's sporting an underwhelming .221/.258/.416 slash line through 30 games, and at this point, he isn't a must-own player outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta still out

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 23:44:43 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) was out of the starting lineup Monday, July 18.

Fantasy Tip: Keep Peralta off your regular roster as long as he is out of the lineup. It shouldn't be too much longer before Peralta returns to active duty.

Cardinals | Three Cardinals regulars sitting

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 13:48:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams, 2B Kolten Wong and 3B Jhonny Peralta are not in the starting lineup Monday, July 18. OF Matt Holliday is at first base and hitting cleanup, 2B Jedd Gyorko is playing the keystone and batting seventh and INF Greg Garcia is at the hot corner and hitting eighth against San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich.

Fantasy Tip: Holliday is typically an everyday player and is facing a fine matchup against the lefty, so he is a great addition to all fantasy lineups tonight. Gyorko has power but makes inconsistent contact, while Garcia has a good average .333 in limited at-bats but very little offensive upside. Both Gyorko and Garcia are deeper sleepers for DFS. Adams and Wong are likely being rested against the southpaw.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday, Jhonny Peralta playing

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 09:05:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (ankle) and SS Jhonny Peralta (thumb) are in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Chase Anderson Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta will return after missing the last few games because of the injury, while Holliday will play despite suffering his injury Friday, July 8. Both players should be considered risky options because of their injuries but can be decent option in most leagues.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta out Friday

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 13:37:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is not in the lineup Friday, July 8, against the Milwaukee Brewers. 3B Greg Garcia will start again and lead off against Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson.

Fantasy Tip: Leave Peralta off your active roster until he is healthy enough to play without pain. The team isn't worried long-term, and Peralta will get a natural break come All-Star time. Garcia (.344-2-10) may be worth a low-priced pickup in daily leagues with him in the leadoff spot, and he could be stashed in deeper formats with Matt Carpenter out.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta could be back soon

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 09:06:32 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals are hoping 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) can return to the starting lineup Thursday, July 7, or Friday, July 8.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals' infield is beat up right now with Matt Carpenter landing on the DL Thursday. Peralta has been slow to hit after suffering a torn ligament in his thumb earlier this year and is hitting just .237 with three home runs and 11 RBI. The thumb problem could be limiting his power stroke, and unless he shows signs of turning it around, he has little appeal in mixed formats.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter, Jhonny Peralta out

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 08:34:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter (oblique) and 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) are out of the lineup Thursday, July 7, with 3B Greg Garcia hitting leadoff and 2B Kolten Wong hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia is hitting .344 and has low-end upside against Tyler Glasnow in his major league debut. Wong has struggled at the plate all year, and he doesn't have much upside in this spot in the lineup.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta not in lineup

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 14:58:30 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 6. 2B Greg Garcia is starting at the hot corner and is batting eighth against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta's injury isn't believed to be related to his thumb injury from earlier this year, so he could be day-to-day. Stay tuned. Garcia has hit .351 (20-for-57) in a small sample size, but he has very little power and is a low-end deep sleeper consideration in DFS.
