The Associated Press reports former NFL OL Nate Newton said in an interview his competitive nature led him to become involved in the drug business. "I've always been competitive. I've always been in sports," Newton told Dallas radio station KKDA. "I couldn't see myself not being the biggest dope man." Newton was released from jail last year after serving a 2 1/2 year sentence. Newton estimated he could have made up to $75,000 per drug deal, another reason he said running drugs appealed to him. He was caught twice in possession of marijuana.

The Associated Press reports former Dallas Cowboys OL Nate Newton was sentenced to 30 months in prison Wednesday on federal charges of drug trafficking. Newton, 40, could have faced up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. He was also placed on three years’ parole, fined $25,000, must serve 250 hours of community service, and undergo mandatory drug testing when his sentence is over.

Associated Press reports former Dallas OL Nate Newton pleaded guilty to a federal drug trafficking charge after accepting a plea agreement on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute marijuana. The charges of aiding and abetting to possess and distribute marijuana will be dropped. Newton is expected to serve up to 30 months with credit for time served.

The AP reports that the contract signed by OL Nate Newton with the Panthers is for one-year and is also incentive laden. According to his agent, Jim Neader, "it's heavily incentive-based, it's a show-what-you-can-do type of contract." "We look forward to Nate Newton working with our offensive line group and providing us with valuable experience and depth," Panthers coach George Seifert said.

The Tampa Tribune reports the team had OL Nate Newton in town for a workout and physical. ``[Newton] is one of the better players in the league,'' Dungy said. ``Any time you've got one of the good players out there, you get to know him, get a feel for him. It gives us a chance to find out about him, and if we need something in the future, at least we'll have that information.''

The Dallas Morning News reports ex-Cowboy OL Nate Newton's agent has stated his client expects to sign with a new team by the end of the month. Newton has scheduled to meet with a team next week but his agent Jim Neader declined to comment on which team that was.

Panthers | Lacina On His Way Out?

The Journal reports the Carolina Panthers are seriously considering cutting OL Corbin Lacina after June 1st to open more room under the salary cap. By releasing him, the team would save roughly $1.22 million under the cap this year which could allow them to make a serious push for ex-Cowboy Nate Newton or another veteran Free Agent.
