Tigers | Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez go deep

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:03:31 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) and DH Victor Martinez (knee) both hit home runs in the spring game Thursday, March 26. Cabrera's home run was a line drive that looked like his swings from two or three years ago. He also nearly homered on a sacrifice fly to right field in the game. Cabrera will take the day off Friday, March 27, before playing in three straight games.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news to see both Miggy and V-Mart go deep in the same game after they were both behind in spring training due to injuries. Cabrera's old line drive stroke is a welcome sight for those that selected him later in the first round of fantasy drafts. If Cabrera stays healthy, he should continue to produce like a first-rounder.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera plays the field

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 16:59:40 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) played first base for the first time this spring Wednesday, March 25. He made a diving stop on a hard grounder in the game and went 0-for-2 at the plate. "I'm just glad to back on the field playing first base," Cabrera said. "I can play defense and I want to be back at first. I'm seeing the ball, getting my timing down. It's a good sign."

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) should be good to go for opening day, and it's a great sign that he looked good on defense today. Despite injury and aging concerns, Miggy remains a first-round pick (later in the round) in 2015 fantasy baseball drafts. You may want to shy away from him in the first week of the season at FantasyScore, though, as he gets his timing down from missing time this spring.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera in at 1B Wednesday

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 08:18:50 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot) will start at first base in the spring game Wednesday, March 25.

Fantasy Tip: It would be Cabrera's first action in the field this spring, and it's a great sign he is on track to be ready for the season opener. Miggy ($6,300, 12.6% of your cap) is a top player to consider on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera to DH Tuesday

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 09:13:10 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (foot, ankle) will serve as the designated hitter in the spring game Tuesday, March 24, and he might be ready to move to first base during games. Cabrera made his Grapefruit League debut Sunday, March 22, and went 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts. Manager Brad Ausmus said the chances are better than 50% that Cabrera will be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: While Cabrera may be limited to start the 2015 season, the good news is that he hasn't suffered any setbacks so far this spring. Despite the fact that he's an aging slugger who now has injury concerns, he should be considered in the late part of the first round of fantasy baseball drafts.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera playing Sunday

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 08:52:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) is in the starting lineup for the split squad game against the Washington Nationals Sunday, March 22. Cabrera is serving as the designated hitter in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera could be limited to the role of designated hitter in the first few games but should see time at first base at some point during the start of the regular season. Cabrera should be an option in the first round of most drafts if he is ready for the season.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera could play Sunday

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 07:13:06 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) could play in a spring training game as early as Sunday, March 22, depending on how he runs the bases Saturday, March 21.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera takes grounders

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 18:55:54 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) was able to take grounders and batting practice Tuesday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera continues to make progress, and it does not appear he will be in jeopardy of missing any time heading into the regular season due to these injuries. He might even be able to return to spring action within the next few days.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera runs the bases

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 06:45:52 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) ran the bases Saturday, March 15, and manager Brad Ausmus would not rule out Cabrera appearing in his first spring training game this week.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera's power slip last season and current injury could present a profit opportunity for fantasy owners in the middle of Round 1. A bounce-back season is very much within reach, and the potential of returning 35 home runs and 125 RBI with a batting title is nothing to scoff at. He is just a year removed from back-to-back 44 home runs seasons with at least 135 RBI, too.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera progresses to running

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 13:56:20 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) ran sprints and worked on his ground-ball range Thursday, March 12, according to head athletic trainer Kevin Rand.

Fantasy Tip: Nagging injuries hindered Cabrera's final line last season, as he posted his lowest home run total (25) since his rookie year, and he only played 87 games in 2003. The Tigers are being overly cautious with him this spring, but he still projects to be ready for opening day. Cabrera warrants attention in the first round of fantasy drafts this spring, and returning 35 home runs and 125 RBI this season isn't out of the question.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera closer to game action

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 11:16:06 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) fielded grounders on the field Monday, March 9, and he's moving closer to game action this spring. Cabrera moved around from right to left and also took batting practice, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Cabrera is also in the midst of a running program, and he's expected to be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers are being extremely cautious with their best player this spring. If Cabrera doesn't have any setbacks, he should be good to go on opening day, even if he doesn't see many spring at-bats. Cabrera remains one of the best hitters in the league, but recent injuries have seen his numbers take a slight dip. He's still worth a first-round selection in fantasy baseball drafts, but he's going after the middle of the first round now.
