MLB | Alex Rios received multiple offers

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 17:39:07 -0700

Free-agent OF Alex Rios (Royals) received offers from several MLB teams during the offseason but declined them in the hopes of landing with a club that would give him a significant role.

Fantasy Tip: The 35-year-old Rios hit .255 with four home runs and 32 RBI in 385 at-bats for Kansas City in 2015 and could retire if no team comes forward with a suitable offer. If he does wind up signing somewhere, he should be viewed as an option exclusively for single-universe fantasy leagues.

Royals | Kansas City moving on from Alex Rios

Sun, 13 Mar 2016 14:51:32 -0700

Free-agent OF Alex Rios (Royals) will not be re-signed by the Kansas City Royals, as the team is reportedly at budget.

Fantasy Tip: The Royals have enough internal options like Paulo Orlando and Jarrod Dyson (when healthy), so Rios wasn't needed. Wait and see what his eventual status is and draft accordingly. You may need to pick him up as a free agent.

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 09:02:16 -0800

The Kansas City Royals declined OF Alex Rios' mutual option for 2016, which makes him a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: Rios could be a depth grab in drafts next season if he lands on a team with regular playing time.

Royals | Alex Rios comes alive in Game 5

Wed, 14 Oct 2015 22:02:20 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Rios went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBIs in Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Rios ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) had just two hits in 11 at-bats with no RBIs and four strikeouts in the first four games, killing FantasyScore players in the process. This game should jump-start his offense heading into the NLCS.

Royals | Three regulars out for Kansas City

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 13:53:35 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain (knee), 1B Kendrys Morales (quadriceps) and C Salvador Perez (thumb) are not in the starting lineup Friday, Oct. 2. OF Alex Rios (back) is starting in right field and batting sixth against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana Friday.

Fantasy Tip: The Royals are cruising into the playoffs, so there is no reason to risk aggravating a minor injury for one of their everyday players. In seasonal leagues, Cain ($5,600, 11.2% of cap), Morales ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) and Perez ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) aren't slam-dunk owns over the final weekend of the year, and FantasyScore players shouldn't be excited about rolling out any Royals against a surging Santana ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) who has posted a 1.47 ERA over his past six outings.

Royals | Alex Rios a late scratch

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 14:52:28 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Rios (back) was a late scratch Thursday, Oct. 1. OF Jonny Gomes draws into the lineup against Chicago White Sox SP Jonny Gomes Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Gomes ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) has struggled (.143/.250/.238 slash line) since joining the Royals, but he boasts a respectable .830 slash OPS against left-handed pitchers this season, and he checks out as a solid low-priced option for FantasyScore players Thursday.

Royals | Jonny Gomes in against a LHP

Sat, 19 Sep 2015 13:21:11 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Jonny Gomes is hitting seventh Saturday, Sept. 19, in place of OF Alex Rios.

Fantasy Tip: Gomes ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) has a .241-5-15 line against lefties this year and is a basement flyer on FantasyScore against lefty Matt Boyd.

Royals | Alex Rios returns from illness

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 14:34:18 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Rios (illness) is back in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 8, and is starting in right field and batting eighth against Minnesota Twins SP Kyle Gibson.

Fantasy Tip: Rios ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) spent some time away from the team while dealing with an adult case of chickenpox. He's all better now, but avoiding him on FantasyScore is probably the smart play, at least for tonight. An injury earlier this year has made Rios' 2015 season a disappointment, and he has only two home runs and 22 RBI in 82 games.

Royals | Alex Rios, Kelvin Herrera recovering

Fri, 04 Sep 2015 09:19:28 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Rios (illness) and RP Kelvin Herrera (illness) are both recovering quickly from chickenpox, and both could come to the field Friday, Sept. 4, for a workout. The team is confident that no other players have come down with chickenpox. Both Rios and Herrera have experienced only minor symptoms.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Rios ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) and Herrera are recovering nicely, it still may be a few weeks before they return to action. The Royals have a comfortable division lead and probably wouldn't want to risk infecting others right before another postseason run. Neither player has any real value in any fantasy league for the remainder of this season.

Royals | Alex Rios has chickenpox

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 14:19:34 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Rios (illness) has been infected with chickenpox and could miss at least two weeks, according to team officials. Rios left the team over the weekend and flew to Kansas City, and an examination confirmed it Monday, Aug. 31.

Fantasy Tip: With only a month left in the regular season, Rios ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is unlikely to be of much use to his fantasy owners. Cutting him in deep mixed leagues is probably the right course of action. Jarrod Dyson ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) and recently acquired Jonny Gomes ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) can offset the loss of Rios temporarily. Dyson is the better fantasy target for his speed.
