Rangers | No. 5 job in Texas up for grabs

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 22:37:24 -0800

Texas Rangers SPs Jeremy Guthrie and Nick Tepesch are among the candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation this spring along with SPs Chi Chi Gonzalez, A.J. Griffin, Nick Martinez, Cesar Ramos and Anthony Ranaudo.

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the No. 5 rotation spot will be worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues, while the losers are headed to the bullpen or minors and should be avoided for now.

Sat, 20 Feb 2016 16:24:13 -0800

Free-agent SP Jeremy Guthrie (Royals) agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers Saturday, Feb. 20, pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Guthrie is probably limited to AL-only leagues for depth at this stage.

Royals | Jeremy Guthrie's option declined

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 00:29:57 -0800

Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie had his $10 million option declined for 2016, making him a free agent. He will be paid a $3.2 million buyout.

Fantasy Tip: Guthrie's numbers (5.95 ERA in 148 1/3 innings this season, 29 home runs allowed) suggest a pitcher clearly in decline. At this stage, Guthrie has little fantasy value in any drafts.

Royals | Chris Young bumped from rotation

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 15:53:13 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young will be removed from the starting rotation and head to the bullpen to make room for SP Johnny Cueto, according to manager Ned Yost. SP Jeremy Guthrie stays in the rotation for now.

Fantasy Tip: Young ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) what little value he had in much deeper leagues now that he's not starting. However, Guthrie may not be long for the rotation if he continues to be hit hard, so there may be an avenue for Young to hop back in and start some games down the stretch.

Royals | Jeremy Guthrie to remain in rotation

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 13:26:34 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie will remain in the starting rotation for now and will have his next outing against the Chicago White Sox, according to manager Ned Yost. However, Yost also said Guthrie will be evaluated "week-to-week."

Fantasy Tip: Guthrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has allowed 11 earned runs and four home runs in his last two starts to raise his ERA to 5.65 on the season. A matchup against the suddenly hot White Sox in his next start only makes things worse. Avoid Guthrie for now on FantasyScore, and he's only an option for owners in the deepest of leagues.

Royals | Jeremy Guthrie slapped around

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 18:17:44 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie allowed eight runs - seven earned - and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: The Indians were hitting just .211 against Guthrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) in two outings this season, but teed off on him Wednesday. He has a decent 3.96 ERA in 10 home starts, he a dismal 7.66 ERA in 10 road outings. FantasyScore players need not bother with Guthrie outside of Kauffman Stadium.

Mariners | Dustin Ackley has three-hit game

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 23:27:18 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Dustin Ackley had three hits in a game for the first time this season on Tuesday, June 23. Ackley, who singled, doubled and homered, is now 9-for-13 against Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie.

Fantasy Tip: Ackley ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has historically done well against Guthrie, but this is too small a sample size to recommend playing Ackley on a regular basis. He's only batting .204.

Royals | Jeremy Guthrie struggles against Mariners

Mon, 22 Jun 2015 23:49:56 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie has struggled against the Seattle Mariners in his career. Guthrie, who faces the Mariners on Tuesday, June 23, is 2-7 with a 5.40 ERA lifetime against Seattle.

Fantasy Tip: Guthrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has a strong team behind him this year, but that overall record is a little scary. You may want to avoid using Guthrie just because Seattle seemingly has his number.

Royals | Jeremy Guthrie rocked again by Yankees

Mon, 25 May 2015 18:31:09 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie allowed 13 of the 16 batters he faced to reach base and 11 scored in a 14-1 loss to the New York Yankees Monday, May 25. He also walked three and allowed four homers in just one inning of work, and his record against the Yankees fell to 5-11.

Fantasy Tip: Guthrie ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) entered the game with a 4.92 ERA against the Yankees, and he was lit up yet again. He now owns an ugly 6.70 ERA for the year and should only be considered at FantasyScore when he draws the friendliest of matchups.
