New York Yankees 2B Yangervis Solarte and 3B Kelly Johnson could be part of a platoon at third base. Solarte could also see time at second base.

New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said he's confident in the team's current infield and doesn't think the team needs to sign free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox). "I'm pretty content with our infield right now," Steinbrenner said. "I think guys like (Dean) Anna and (Yangervis) Solarte have been pleasant surprises. Kelly Johnson has been good. Derek (Jeter) is healthy. So far, so good. But it's early."

The New York Yankees have placed 1B Mark Teixeira (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly Johnson will play first base while Teixeira is out of the lineup and is valuable in mixed leagues, especially since he'll likely add first base to his position eligibility. Yangervis Solarte is expected to see most of the starts at the hot corner now. Take a look at the utility infielder in AL-only formats.

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (hamstring) suffered a strained right hamstring during the game Friday, April 4.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly Johnson likely will take over at first base if Teixeira misses a decent amount of time. Johnson could become an option in mixed leagues especially if he gains first base eligibility. Yangervis Solarte and Dean Anna could see time at third base if Johnson moves to first base. Both could have value in AL-only leagues, but Solarte should be the top target. Teixeira could be placed on the disabled list if the injury will take weeks to heal.

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (undisclosed) left the game early with an undisclosed injury Friday, April 4. 3B Kelly Johnson replaced Teixeira at first base.
Fantasy Tip: Early speculation is that the injury is to Tex's hamstring, but it's not confirmed. A hamstring injury would be welcomed by his owners, as long as it's not related to the wrist injury that ruined his 2013 season. Check back for more.

It appears as though New York Yankees 3B Kelly Johnson will open the season as the team's starting third baseman. "We kinda thought about that a little bit going into the season when we signed Kelly, but his at-bats have been good against right-handers, left-handers," manager Joe Girardi said when asked if he still planned to split the position between Johnson and SS Eduardo Nunez. "There's some different things we can do with it, obviously."
Fantasy Tip: Johnson is an attractive option as your middle or corner infielder now that he'll open the season with plenty of playing time. Johnson's average won't help much, nor will his lack of stolen bases, but you probably can't beat the pop he'll deliver that late in drafts.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said 2B Brian Roberts will start for the team at second base this season. "That is the plan, for him to be our second baseman," Girardi said. "I know he hasn't played a full season in the last few years, he's obviously a guy who has some age on him too, but my plan is to run him out there every day." 3B Kelly Johnson is slated to at least platoon at third base. 2B Brendan Ryan is also a candidate to see time at the keystone.

The New York Yankees are highly unlikely to bid on free-agent SS Stephen Drew (Red Sox), according to major league officials in contact with Yankees officials. The team may need a contingency plan to SS Derek Jeter as he comes back from a serious injury and to replace 2B Robinson Cano and 3B Alex Rodriguez. General manager Brian Cashman seems content on starting the year with INFs Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson, Eduardo Nunez and Brendan Ryan providing infield depth. The Yankees are not expected to stretch their budget much further after going past their self-imposed $189 million payroll limit.
