Cardinals | Yadier Molina receives day off

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 15:08:22 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (rest) is not in the lineup Thursday, June 30, versus the Kansas City Royals. C Brayan Pena gets the start behind the plate in his place and will hit seventh against SP Chris R. Young.

Fantasy Tip: It's just a day off for Molina, who should return to the batting order on Friday. The backup veteran Pena will get some rare playing time as a result, but isn't really worth much of a look in daily games for this evening.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina receives day off

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 12:24:57 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton Sunday, June 26. C Eric Fryer will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Fryer is hitting .394 in his limited playing time but has received only eight at-bats this month. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use in their lineups.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal holds on for 13th save

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 22:37:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal made things interesting yet again on Monday, June 20 - giving up a leadoff double to Chicago Cubs OF Albert Almora Jr., hitting pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan with a pitch and allowing a single to 2B Ben Zobrist - but forced a game-ending infield popup for the final out after C Yadier Molina made a stellar defensive play to retire Almora at third for the second out.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Mike Matheny continues to stand by his man, but Rosenthal isn't making it easy. The 26-year-old closer has only three clean outings this month and, as a result, a 12.00 ERA and 2.67 WHIP in nine June appearances. He also has a HBP each of his last two games as well. A closer change doesn't appear imminent yet based on Matheny's postgame comments, but owners could make a play for Kevin Siegrist if they have room on their roster to do so.

Cardinals | Matt Adams, Yadier Molina out

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 10:29:52 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams and C Yadier Molina are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez Sunday, June 19. OF Brandon Moss will start at first base and is batting sixth, while C Eric Fryer will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Moss has at least one hit in seven of his last eight games and has five multi-hit games during that span. He should be a solid starting candidate in most fantasy leagues. Fryer is hitting .414 in limited playing time this season, but owners may be able to find better options to use.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina sitting vs. Pirates

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 14:09:00 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is not in the starting lineup Friday, June 10. C Eric Fryer is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Molina is a viable starting catcher with 22 runs, 22 RBI and a .271/.348/.362 slash line, but don't expect much power, as he has just 12 bombs since the beginning of the 2014 season. Fryer is 11-for-26 this season and could be a contrarian flier in daily contests, albeit it a risky one facing Cole Friday.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina slumping

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 10:50:58 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is stuck in a 4-for-45 slump entering the game Wednesday, June 1, and he has started 49 of the team's first 54 games. Molina could be rested more once C Brayan Pena (knee) returns in a couple of weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Molina is still hitting .271 with a homer and 19 RBI and remains one of the better fantasy starting catchers to own despite his recent slump. Ride it out and wait for Molina to find his groove at the plate again.

Cardinals | St. Louis sitting four starters

Sun, 29 May 2016 09:18:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Aledmys Diaz, OF Stephen Piscotty, C Yadier Molina and 2B Kolten Wong are not in the starting lineup against Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg Sunday, May 29. SS Greg Garcia will start in shortstop and is batting second. 1B Brandon Moss will start in left field and is batting sixth. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start in second base and is batting seventh, while C Eric Fryer will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia has played very well over the last seven days and should be sleeper candidate in daily fantasy leagues. Moss, Gyorko and Fryer has struggled recently and can be avoided in most leagues.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina proving his health

Tue, 17 May 2016 14:58:32 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is in the midst of one of his finest offensive seasons since 2013, when he finished third in the voting for National League Most Valuable Player. Molina hit his 12th double Sunday, May 15, and is on pace for 51. His .333 average ranks seventh in the NL, and he has 16 RBI. Molina is surprised with his production after dealing with a thumb injury throughout spring training. He has started 34 of the team's first 38 games. Molina has yet to hit a home run, but the improved strength in his hand is showing.

Fantasy Tip: Molina has surprised many and has been a great value at the catcher position as a solid No. 1 starter in all fantasy formats. The power was already in decline before this year, and any long balls you get from him are icing on the cake.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina out of Sunday lineup

Sun, 15 May 2016 14:59:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is not starting Sunday, May 15, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. C Eric Fryer is batting eighth against Dodgers SP Alex Wood.

Fantasy Tip: Molina is out due to the left. vs. left matchup, so he gets the night off (or most of it, anyway). Fryer is a .538 hitter this season (7-for-13), so if you are looking for a low-cost flyer on your fantasy team he may not be bad. Fryer also isn't a bad option as a "handcuff" player in deeper leagues in case Molina gets hurt.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina tough to strike out

Fri, 13 May 2016 15:41:45 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina has gone 43 straight plate appearances without a strikeout, which is the second longest streak in baseball.

Fantasy Tip: The power has disappeared (no home runs), but Molina is making plenty of contact good enough for a .336 average (41-for-122) on the season. His owners can't complain given how wrist injuries have really set Molina back the last several seasons offensively. He appears to be fully healthy and is a solid No. 1 fantasy catcher in all leagues.
