Giants | Marlon Byrd provides the spark

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 05:58:17 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Marlon Byrd went 1-for-5 with a grand slam during the Giants' 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: While Byrd ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) is just 7-for-28 since joining the Giants, he has three home runs and 10 RBI with a .930 OPS. It is a small sample size, but Byrd remains a solid contributor in the power categories. He has 22 home runs and 52 RBI for the season in just 103 games. It is easy to forget about the veteran, but he can help in deep mixed leagues.

Giants | Marlon Byrd hitting fifth in debut

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 13:32:41 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Marlon Byrd is starting in right field and batting fifth against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke in his debut with the Giants Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Byrd ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) should play every day in San Fran's outfield, at least until Hunter Pence returns from the DL. Byrd's overall fantasy value takes a slight hit with the move to an ultra-friendly pitching park. On FantasyScore tonight against a lefty, Byrd isn't a bad option, as he's hitting .280 (23-for-82) with four of his 19 home runs against southpaws this year.

Reds | Marlon Byrd traded away

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 13:26:51 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd was traded to the San Francisco Giants Thursday, Aug. 20, in exchange for P Stephen Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: The trade of Byrd opens up plenty of playing time in the Cincy outfield, especially since Billy Hamilton is currently on the DL. Expect Brennan Boesch, Jason Bourgeois ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) and Skip Schumaker ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) to all see notable at-bats down the stretch. This trio doesn't carry much fantasy value at all, though, aside from deep NL-only leagues, and they are weak options on FantasyScore.

Giants | Marlon Byrd acquired by Giants

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 13:24:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd was acquired by the San Francisco Giants Thursday, Aug. 20, in exchange for P Stephen Johnson.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Pence and Angel Pagan are injured for San Fran, so Byrd ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) will be an immediate upgrade to their injured outfield. He should play nearly every day, at least until Pence and Pagan return. The move to hitter-friendly San Fran won't help Byrd's fantasy value at all, though.

Reds | Marlon Byrd out vs. Royals

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 15:06:06 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd is not starting Wednesday, Aug. 19. 2B Skip Schumaker is starting in left field and batting eighth against Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Byrd ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats Wednesday. He is hitting just .183 with four RBI through 64 plate appearances in August. Seasonal owners should be sizing up replacements. Schumaker ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation source of cap relief for FantasyScore contests Wednesday.

Reds | Quiet on the trade front for the Reds

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 14:50:48 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd, 2B Skip Schumaker, C Brayan Pena and RP Manny Parra are all potential trade candidates who could likely clear waivers, but Cincinnati has not received any trade interest on them, accordingly to general manager Walt Jocketty.

Fantasy Tip: There is still potential a deal could be made before the deadline for players to be eligible for the post season Monday, Aug. 31, but outside Byrd ($4,600, 9.2% of cap), the other three are essentially fantasy afterthoughts outside cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 15:07:22 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Aug. 11. 2B Skip Schumaker is starting in left field and hitting second against San Diego Padres SP Colin Rea.

Fantasy Tip: Schumaker ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has 32 hits in 147 at-bats (.218) this year with no home runs and nine RBI. Look to avoid him on FantasyScore, even while going up against a pitcher making his major league debut.

Reds | Jay Bruce starting Saturday

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 10:57:11 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce is back in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Saturday, Aug. 1. He will bat cleanup and play right field. OF Marlon Byrd, who played right field Friday, July 31, will move back to left field and bat fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Bruce ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) is 8-for-22 (.364) with two home runs and 10 RBIs over the past week, making him worthy of consideration for FantasyScore lineups. He is 3-for-12 (.250) with a double and an RBI in his career against Cole.

Mets | NY wants to add another bat

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 12:17:58 -0700

The New York Mets want to add another big bat at the trading deadline, and they have their sights set on San Diego Padres OF Justin Upton, Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez, Milwaukee Brewers OFs Carlos Gomez and Gerardo Parra and Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce. The Padres and Mets didn't agree on a prospect package for Upton, but the talks could be rekindled. Gonzalez's price tag would be high, as he is heating up this summer. The Reds are showing interest in SP Zack Wheeler in exchange for Bruce. Reds OF Marlon Byrd could be a fallback option for the Mets.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets surely could use a boost on the offensive side, and any of these bats would do just fine. A move to New York for any of these names is unlikely to drastically affect their fantasy value, although some of those names would be leaving fine hitting environments.

Reds | Marlon Byrd out Tuesday

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 16:59:44 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Marlon Byrd is out of the starting lineup Tuesday, July 28, against the St. Louis Cardinals. OF Jason Bourgeois will start in left field and hit leadoff against LHP Jaime Garcia.

Fantasy Tip: Bourgeois ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is riding a three-game hit streak, but he's still hitting just .222 on the season, and he won't be worth consideration.
