Chargers | Antonio Gates has no targets

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 21:20:47 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates did not have any catches and he was not even targeted in the Week 12 game against the Houston Texans, snapping his 77-game streak with at least one reception.

Fantasy Tip: It was an ugly goose egg for fantasy owners relying upon Gates as a low-end TE1. There was no report of any injury, but if an update comes out we'll have it for you. He'll look to rebound in Week 14.

Chargers | Antonio Gates finds end zone

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 19:29:03 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted four receptions for 63 yards with a touchdown in the Week 10 game against the Miami Dolphins. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: Gates was on the injury report with a knee this week, but when it was game time he showed no ill effects of the injury. People keep trying to write Gates off and all he does is produce. However, he won't be producing anything in Week 11 with the team on a bye.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) practiced in full again Friday, Nov. 11, and he is expected to start in the Week 10 game against the Miami Dolphins.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is looking to visit the end zone for a third straight week when Miami comes calling. He remains a decent low-end TE1 in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Chargers | Antonio Gates fully practices

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 13:43:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has officially taken back his place as the starting tight end for the Chargers. While he looks sluggish and over the hill at times, he should still be started as a TE1 this week.

Chargers | Antonio Gates limited

Wed, 09 Nov 2016 14:36:27 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Gates was more involved in a high-scoring win last week, but Hunter Henry wasn't playing. Even so, something must be said of the two touchdowns Gates has scored in consecutive games. He's not his old self, but he's still capable of producing TE1 numbers.

Chargers | Antonio Gates continues to produce

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 22:45:55 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted five receptions for a game-high 75 yards and a touchdown on nine targets in the Week 9 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: Gates continues to produce, and he was especially strong in this one with Hunter Henry on the mend. Gates remains a low-end TE1 heading into Week 10 against the Miami Dolphins.

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 20:39:50 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted four grabs for 33 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: People keep trying to write off Gates and all he does is produce. Sure, he isn't a top-flight fantasy option these days, but he remains a useful low-end TE1 in most formats.

Chargers | Five catches for Antonio Gates

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 22:53:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted a season-high five receptions for 38 yards on 10 targets in the Week 7 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has been bothered by a hamstring injury, and he hasn't posted more than 38 yards receiving in any of his five outings. Avoid him in all but the deepest of fantasy leagues until he starts to produce more consistent results.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not 100 percent

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 21:55:17 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) said Monday, Oct. 17, that he is not 100 percent healthy. "It's very difficult when you're constantly playing on it," Gates said. "This is new for me, to be dealing with a hamstring. So I'm learning a lot about it."

Fantasy Tip: With Gates laboring, rookie Hunter Henry has seen a bigger role in the San Diego offense and he is flourishing. Gates is only worth using in deeper fantasy leagues, while Henry is worth using in all leagues of 12 or more teams while running hot.

Chargers | Antonio Gates playing in Week 5

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 12:37:54 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is officially active for the team's Week 5 game.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has missed the last few games because of the injury and could see limited snaps in Week 5. He will be a risky option for most fantasy owners and could stay on the bench if owners have better options to use.

Chargers | Antonio Gates expected to play

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 06:17:32 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is expected to be active for Week 5's game against the Oakland Raiders, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Gates was a full participant in practice Friday, Oct. 7, and had been a limited participant in the two sessions held earlier in the week. However, it is uncertain how many snaps he will see in Sunday's game, especially given how well TE Hunter Henry performed in his absence. Avoid using Gates in daily fantasy contests this week, as well as seasonal formats where safer options are available.

Chargers | Antonio Gates listed as questionable

Fri, 07 Oct 2016 17:47:07 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 7, and is listed as questionable for Week 5.

Fantasy Tip: Gates may be a game-time decision, so owners will need to check the inactive list. Gates will be a risky option for owners because he has missed the last two weeks and hamstring injuries can linger. Owners should consider benching Gates if they have better options.

Chargers | Antonio Gates likely to play Week 5

Fri, 07 Oct 2016 15:02:41 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is leaning toward "giving it a go" in Week 5 versus the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: While this is good news in terms of his possible return to full-time snaps next week, owners should expect him to be very limited this week. Hunter Henry is the better fantasy play this week, although Gates' probably return does remove some of the luster from this plus-matchup. With San Diego playing Denver on Thursday next week, expect to see more Gates in that game, assuming he doesn't have a setback Sunday.

Chargers | Antonio Gates still limited

Thu, 06 Oct 2016 15:45:19 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Gates may be a true game-time decision for Week 5. If he can't play or is limited at all then Hunter Henry will continue to be more of a factor in the passing game. If Gates is ruled out then Henry becomes a low-end TE1.

Chargers | Antonio Gates limited in practice

Wed, 05 Oct 2016 19:02:13 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and should be reserved in all fantasy leagues until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks. Rookie Hunter Henry would make another start if Gates still cannot go in Week 5.

Chargers | Antonio Gates to sit out

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 12:54:34 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has been declared inactive for the team's Week 4 game.

Chargers | Antonio Gates listed as doubtful

Fri, 30 Sep 2016 13:07:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Gates will miss at least one more week because of his injury. Hunter Henry will receive most of the playing time at tight end and should be an attractive starting option in deeper leagues since he should receive targets during the game.

Chargers | Antonio Gates remains out of practice

Fri, 30 Sep 2016 11:36:57 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 30, and is expected to miss his second straight game in Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: Gates was given a three-week timeline after his diagnosis and it looks like that will be the case. Hunter Henry played every offensive snap in Week 3 and fared well. The rookie gets another soft matchup this week and is a high-upside play at home against one of the worst defenses in the league.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not on the field

Thu, 29 Sep 2016 12:15:05 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is not participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Gates probably will miss at least one more game because his injury, but owners should continue to monitor the situation. Hunter Henry would start again if Gates is ruled out and could be a low-end No. 1 tight end in deeper leagues after a solid 76-yard performance in Week 3.

Chargers | Antonio Gates does not practice

Wed, 28 Sep 2016 14:06:48 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Gates wasn't close to playing in Week 3, so it might be a long shot for him to suit up against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Oct. 2. In the majority of leagues, you'll likely want to maximizing the upside of your bench and move on from the veteran because owning two tight ends is often at the peril of your running back and wide receiver depth. Hunter Henry played every snap last week and had five catches for 76 yards. He's worth a look in deep settings.

Chargers | Antonio Gates likely to miss Week 4

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 10:50:27 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) "wasn't close" to playing in Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts and is likely to miss Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints, according to Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry played all 59 snaps versus the Colts and fared well outside of a late fourth-quarter fumble that squashed any chance of a rally, finishing with five catches for 76 yards. It appears the rookie could be in for another busy day at the office in a plus-matchup at home versus New Orleans next week.

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 13:15:30 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has been declared inactive for Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry will start at tight end and should have a solid role in the passing game in Week 3. He could be a decent option in daily fantasy leagues and can be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Chargers | Asante Cleveland promoted

Sat, 24 Sep 2016 11:21:58 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Asante Cleveland was signed off the practice squad Saturday, Sept. 24, further signaling that Antonio Gates (hamstring) will likely not play in Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter Henry will get the start barring a miraculous recovery by Gates and should receive the bulk of the snaps in a plus-matchup, but the rookie is still going to be hard to trust as a streaming option until we see just how comfortable Philip Rivers is with him.

Chargers | Antonio Gates doubtful for Week 3

Fri, 23 Sep 2016 11:59:19 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) has yet to practice this week and has been all but ruled out for Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: ESPN reported earlier Friday that Gates has been told he will need two to three weeks to recover, so owners should prepare for a multi-week absence from the veteran tight end. Rookie Hunter Henry will draw his first start as a result, but he's a weak streaming option even in a favorable matchup this week.

Chargers | Antonio Gates not on the field

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 11:23:31 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is not participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Gates' availability for Week 3 is uncertain at this point, so owners will need to keep an eye on the situation over the next few days. He would have a decent matchup if he plays, but owners may want to use other options in their lineup.

Chargers | Antonio Gates uncertain for Week 3

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 22:39:37 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is uncertain for Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, as he is battling a hamstring injury. If Gates is limited or inactive, TE Hunter Henry would likely see more involvement in the offense with TE Sean McGrath in a backup role.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is a strong fantasy play if he is declared healthy to play, as the Colts secondary is dinged up and susceptible to big play through the air.

Chargers | Antonio Gates does not practice

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 17:18:26 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Gates is in danger of missing Week 3. He has caught six passes for only 35 yards in the first two games but should be a focal point of the passing game with Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead out for the season. He should still be a solid starting option in most fantasy leagues.

Chargers | Antonio Gates to see more action in Week 2

Sat, 17 Sep 2016 11:34:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is expected to be much more involved in Week 2 versus the Jacksonville Jaguars than he was in the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN's Eric Williams.

Fantasy Tip: The Chiefs like to use safety Eric Berry in shadow coverage versus tight ends, so Gates was a poor bet to light it up in Week 1. However, he has feasted recently against defenses that play a lot of Cover 3 - such as the Seattle Seahawks and Jaguars - posting a 4-53-2 line versus Jacksonville last year. Although the Jaguars are better on defense this year, Gates will be counted on to do more this week and beyond with Keenan Allen out for the year. The future Canton-bound tight end should be considered a must-start.

Chargers | Two Chargers close to history

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 14:11:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and TE Antonio Gates are nine touchdowns away from surpassing San Francisco 49ers QB Steve Young and WR Jerry Rice for touchdown connections. They would then only trail former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison for most touchdowns between a quarterback and pass-catcher in a career.

Fantasy Tip: You can bet Rivers and Gates know what's at stake this season, and one would think they will try to pass the legendary 49er duo this season. The tight end's best seasons are probably behind him, but he still has gas left in the tank. Draft Gates as a borderline TE1 and Rivers as a mid- to low-end QB1.

Chargers | Hunter Henry headed for big workload?

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 18:44:38 -0700

San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry's blocking ability will allow him to contribute right away before replacing TE Antonio Gates as the primary pass-catching tight end down the road, and beat writer Michael Gehlken believes Henry could see more snaps this season than Gates.

Fantasy Tip: Henry is a must-own player in dynasty formats, and if Gates suffers an injury, he will be worth picking up in all formats.

Chargers | Antonio Gates terms

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 09:18:54 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates agreed to a two-year, $12 million deal to return to the Chargers Wednesday, March 9. He'll likely finish his career with the Chargers.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is up there in age heading into his 14th NFL season, but he remains productive and continues to be one of Philip Rivers' favorite weapons. He had only 56 catches for 630 yards and five touchdowns in 2015, but he can serve as an effective fantasy backup.

Chargers | Unlikely to use franchise tag

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 09:24:19 -0800

The San Diego Chargers don't really have a player worthy of the franchise tag this year. FS Eric Weddle will be allowed to hit the free-agent market. TE Antonio Gates turns 36 this summer and is near the end of his career. TE Ladarius Green could be coveted on the free-agent market, but he's been injured and is too inconsistent.

Chargers | Tight ends to be issue for Chargers?

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:46:30 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates, Ladarius Green, David B. Johnson and John Phillips will all become free agents if they are not re-signed by March 9. Gates is expected to return, however.

Fantasy Tip: Re-signing Gates will be a big plus for the Chargers, and he'll remain in TE1 territory if/when he is re-signed. The depth behind him will be a problem if San Diego can't re-sign at least one of Green, Johnson or Phillips.

Chargers | Antonio Gates likely to return

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 22:36:53 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates is likely to return in 2016. Gates, who will turn 36 in June, has given no indications he's ready to retire.

Fantasy Tip: Gates had a 46-630-4 season while missing four games to suspension and one to injury. He's still a midrange TE1 option in fantasy.

Chargers | Antonio Gates finds end zone

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:19:06 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted three receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos. He was targeted five times.

Fantasy Tip: It was a trying season for Gates, who started out with a four-game suspension and then deal with a few nagging injuries. He wrapped up his year with 56 catches, 630 yards and five scores, so he can still be very productive for fantasy owners.

Chargers | Antonio Gates totals 88 yards

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 20:23:51 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted six receptions for 88 yards in the Week 15 game against the Miami Dolphins. He was targeted nine times.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is finishing up strong, posting six receptions in each of his past three games and he has a total of 164 yards over the past two outings. Since he hasn't found the end zone since Nov. 29, he is considered a low-end TE1 in most fantasy formats, but he remains Top 10 at his position.

Chargers | Antonio Gates may extend career

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 10:38:29 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he will take some time this offseason to decide on his playing future but indicated that he is leaning toward playing in 2016. "I don't want to go out this kind of way," Gates said. "I don't want to go out as a loser. Winning is the way, ideally, you want to go out. … I want to make one more run at it, and then if it doesn't work, be like, 'OK.' That's just my feeling right now."

Fantasy Tip: Gates has missed some games this season but is still one of the better tight ends in the NFL. He has caught at least six passes in three of the last five games and has four touchdowns on the season. He will have a tough Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins but could still be a starting option for owners.

Chargers | Antonio Gates leads team in receiving

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 21:07:20 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates posted six receptions for a team-high 76 yards in the Week 14 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was targeted eight times.

Fantasy Tip: Gates is one of the few NFL-caliber receiver options left for Philip Rivers. He remains a decent low-end TE in fantasy play, and might be the only San Diego player worth using at this point.

Chargers | Antonio Gates draws tough matchup

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 21:23:31 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates faces the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14, and Gates finished with one catch for six yards against the Chiefs in Week 11.

Fantasy Tip: Kansas City has been tough on tight ends in general, and the Chiefs should be able to focus on shutting down Gates ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) once again with the Chargers missing multiple starters in the receiving corps. Spend your money elsewhere at FantasyScore.

Chargers | Antonio Gates scores twice

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 18:00:20 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates finished with four catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: Gates has topped 50 yards in five of his six games this year, and while injuries remain a concern, he is one of the better tight end options at FantasyScore when he does suit up.

Chargers | Probable status for three Chargers

Fri, 27 Nov 2015 13:53:24 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates (hip) and Ladarius Green (ankle) and WR Malcom Floyd (shoulder) are listed as probable for Week 12 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how involved Floyd ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) will be in his first game back from a torn labrum, so it might be safe to steer clear of him this week. Gates ($6,800, 13.6%) and Green ($2,900, 5.8%) have a good matchup, but Green's value is minimal with Gates playing.

Chargers | Antonio Gates has full practice

Thu, 26 Nov 2015 13:38:00 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hip) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Barring a setback, Gates ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) should be active for the Week 12 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He grabbed 18 catches and found the end zone twice through his first two games of the season, but since, Gates has just 11 receptions for 131 yards without a score through three games. Even with a plus-matchup, Gates is pricey at FantasyScore, but he checks out as a mid- to low-end starting tight end in seasonal formats.

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 15:48:11 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hip) and WR Malcom Floyd (shoulder) were limited in practice Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Fantasy Tip: The Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers' Week 12 opponent, have been fairly accommodating to tight ends this year, but not as much to wide receivers. Floyd ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) may not even play as he is still recovering from a torn labrum. Gates ($6,800, 13.6%), however, is a solid option if he plays.

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 18:58:52 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Ladarius Green and Antonio Gates were each limited to just one catch in Week 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Green and Gates were huge disappointments for fantasy owners, especially since more targets were expected with the wide receiver corps decimated. It's becoming clear that basically no one in the San Diego roster can be trusted for fantasy purposes right now.

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 11:47:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers TEs Antonio Gates (knee, hip) and Ladarius Green (ankle) are active Sunday, Nov. 22, against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is still the better play here despite both players being active. It's unclear how involved Green ($2,900, 5.8%) will be coming off his injury and with Gates also playing. Take a wait-and-see approach with Green.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates faces the Kansas City Chiefs at home in Week 11, and he has caught at least one touchdown in five straight home games against the Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Gates ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) is dealing with some injuries, but if he does suit up, history says he will find the end zone.
