Red Sox | Rusney Castillo unlikely to make team

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 10:50:53 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) has been impressive in recent days after recovering from an oblique injury, but it appears unlikely that he'll have a spot on the opening day roster. OF Shane Victorino hasn't done anything to lose the starting right field job this spring. OF Jackie Bradley Jr. has had a good camp, but he's ticketed to start at Triple-A Pawtucket with Castillo.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) should eventually figure into Boston's outfield situation in 2015. He possesses heaps of upside at the plate, and Victorino is likely to eventually need some time off. Castillo's fantasy value has faded a bit, but it just means that he could be a huge bargain now in the later rounds of standard drafts.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino dealing with physical issues

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 10:36:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino needed some extra recovery time this spring when he felt "soreness" in his lower body, and more recently, he had to give up switch hitting because he had soreness while hitting left-handed. It could serve as a reminder that Victorino will be limited this year, although manager John Farrell said he'll start in right field when healthy. One evaluator doesn't think Victorino would be able to play more than four times a week to start the year. There's an outside chance that he could start the season on the disabled list to buy him more recovery time.

Fantasy Tip: Victorino, at age 34, comes with the caveat "when healthy." It almost seems inevitable that he'll need some time on the DL at least once in 2015, which would open up playing time for the likes of Rusney Castillo, Daniel Nava and Allen Craig. Victorino isn't likely to hit leadoff anymore, either, further limiting his fantasy value. He sure isn't the Flyin' Hawaiin anymore.

Red Sox | Allen Craig making case for spot

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:34:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Allen Craig is hitting .276 in 36 spring at-bats, and he's looking more comfortable in his recovery from a Lisfranc injury to his left foot in 2014 that left him hitting just .128 in 29 games with the Red Sox after a summer trade. OF Shane Victorino is expected to be the starting right fielder, if healthy, but the team is still evaluating his readiness in camp. OF Daniel Nava is a lock for a roster spot as the main lefty bat off the bench. Craig may be out of a chance for a spot unless OF Rusney Castillo (oblique) opens up in the minors. "He's in great shape, and the foot's not an issue. He's taking better swings and having more consistent at-bats. (That time) beyond spring training is going to get here. I don't know how else we can go about it," manager John Farrell said.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Craig earns a roster spot for opening day, he's unlikely to see consistent playing time unless an injury opens up more playing time in the outfield. For that reason alone, Craig should only be considered in AL-only leagues, for now.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino not healthy?

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 15:01:46 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino does not look right physically this spring, according to multiple scouts. Victorino played in back-to-back games Sunday, March 22, and Monday, March 23, but he served as the designated hitter Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Victorino is 34 and hasn't played more than 122 games in each of the last four seasons due to various ailments. He's probably no longer a lock for double-digit home runs anymore, either. Playing time could be in question because of a crowded Boston outfield on top of it. Victorino isn't very attractive in standard mixed leagues, and he only garners a very cheap investment in AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino to hit right-handed

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 10:07:51 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino will hit exclusively from the right side this season, according to manager John Farrell. He had been hitting from the left side during spring training in an attempt to return to switch hitting for the first time since August 2013. However, he has decided that batting from both sides of the plate will take too much of a toll on him physically.

Fantasy Tip: Given his recent injury history, Victorino shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a late-round gamble in drafts for universal fantasy leagues, even though he is expected to be Boston's leadoff hitter and regular right fielder.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino to hit leadoff?

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 16:06:12 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino could bat first, according to manager John Farrell. "Vic is a candidate, but it will be dependent on the opposing pitcher on a given day," Farrell said. OF Mookie Betts, who is battling OFs Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr. for the center field job, hit .308/.393/.423 in his last 20 starts of the year hitting leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: With Victorino already declared the starter in right field to open the season if healthy, news of him possibly batting leadoff bumps his fantasy value up a notch. Still, Victorino is an older player with a recent injury history. He shouldn't be viewed as more than a late-round gamble in mixed leagues as a potential modest contributor across the board, with stolen bases serving as the category he's most likely to move the needle in.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino to start in RF?

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 09:32:42 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) will be the starting right fielder if he's healthy, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: The Red Sox have a very crowded outfield situation, but they are financially committed to Victorino. If he's healthy, that may make things difficult on Mookie Betts and Rusney Castillo to find playing time, as well as Allen Craig and Daniel Nava. Betts still remains the best late-round gamble because of his upside and speed. If Victorino is starting on opening day, he could be a matchup play, at best, in daily games.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino ready to compete

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 15:49:39 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) has arrived to spring training early, and he said he ready to take on OF Mookie Betts in a "friendly competition" for the starting right field job. Victorino had a serious procedure known as a lumbar discectomy to fix a herniated disc in his back in the offseason, and there are questions as to whether he can make a comeback. Victorino is using talk about him being washed up as motivation, and he has been doing baseball activity for weeks and has returned to switch hitting.

"I've done nothing that's made me stop," Victorino said. "I've done everything I can possibly do. The only thing I haven't done is run the bases. I hit left-handed. I hit right-handed. I swung as hard as I can. I took live BP, I did flip and tee work. Consistently, every day, sometimes 50 to 100 swings every day."

Fantasy Tip: The Red Sox must still pay Victorino $13 million in the final year of his three-year deal, so if he's healthy, he'll likely contribute in some fashion. However, Betts clearly has much more upside, especially with stolen bases. Depending on how camp goes with injuries, Victorino probably shouldn't be an option in standard 12-team leagues, but he could be useful in daily games based on matchups.

Red Sox | Shane Victorino to be eased in

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 16:55:49 -0800

Boston Red Sox OF Shane Victorino (back) will be eased into games during spring training after undergoing back surgery last August. Victorino has released videos of him during strenuous workouts in recent weeks. "I know he's eager to get here and we're eager to see him," manager John Farrell said. "One of the questions we have to answer are what his capabilities are."
