Mets | Kyle Farnsworth's health fine

Tue, 22 Apr 2014 09:13:35 -0700

New York Mets RP Kyle Farnsworth was hunched over and shaking his forearm after the game Monday, April 21, but the team said their new closer is "fine." Farnsworth acknowledged flexing forearm after his save Monday, but he said it's just a sign of being "old." He might not be available to close Tuesday, April 22, because he's been warmed up frequently recently.

Fantasy Tip: That's not what you want to hear from a 38-year-old reliever that was just put into the closing role. Don't lose sight of Jose Valverde or Jeurys Familia, who could see save opportunities if Farnsworth breaks down health-wise.

Mets | Want Jose Valverde to use splitter more often

Mon, 21 Apr 2014 08:40:10 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins told RP Jose Valverde that he wants him to use his split-fingered fastball more often, and Valverde agreed it was a good idea. Valverde was demoted from the closer's role Sunday, April 20, after allowing four home runs in his last three outings.

Fantasy Tip: Valverde loses appeal now that he's in a setup role for the Mets. However, Farnsworth's leash probably isn't that long, either, so it's conceivable that Papa Grande could win the role back, especially if he appeases Collins by using the splitter more frequently.

Mets | Kyle Farnsworth named closer

Sun, 20 Apr 2014 07:16:11 -0700

The New York Mets named RP Kyle Farnsworth as the team's closer Sunday, April 20.

Fantasy Tip: Farnsworth should be owned in all leagues. Get him into your lineups. Jose Valverde will likely see late inning bullpen work and is probably going to lose some of his fantasy baseball value as a result of this move. For more on this situation, go to our Closer Depth Charts.

Mets | Jose Valverde still the closer

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 17:01:00 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said RP Jose Valverde remains the team's closer after allowing home runs to three of the last eight batters he's faced. Valverde gave up two home runs with a five-run lead in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, April 16. His ERA has risen to 6.14.

Fantasy Tip: It's way too soon to start looking for a change at the back end of the Mets' bullpen. Valverde will be prone to the long ball, but he's earned a little more rope to start the season. New York doesn't have a wealth of other options with closing experience, either.

Mets | Bobby Parnell to undergo Tommy John surgery

Sun, 06 Apr 2014 16:43:59 -0700

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, April 8. He'll miss the rest of the 2014 season.

Fantasy Tip: This leaves a giant vacuum in the Mets' SV picture, which is currently being filled by Jose Valverde. This gives him some more leeway, and he's looked decent lately. But for the rest of the season, he's a shaky bet. Others, including Jeurys Familia, Gonzalez Germen and Vic Black or someone not currently on the club could chime in. Valverde is best used as a third mixed closer. Be careful.

Mets | To mix and match in eighth inning

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 15:24:57 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said he'll likely mix and match with eighth-inning setup duties. RP Kyle Farnsworth is a possibility, but so are RPs Jeurys Familia and Scott Rice, among others. The Mets will not immediately look to sign another late-inning reliever available on the free-agent market just yet. New York will also consider promoting SPs Rafael Montero or Jacob deGrom for a bullpen role, but it's unlikely to happen soon.

Fantasy Tip: The only thing really clear for now is that Jose Valverde is the team's closer with Bobby Parnell (elbow) out. That could change, too, but based on Papa Grande's performance this spring and on opening day, he'll have a little rope to play with.

Mets | Jose Valverde the closer

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 12:57:30 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed Wednesday, April 2, that RP Jose Valverde is the team's closer with RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: This was fully expected. Valverde should now be owned in all leagues.

Mets | Bobby Parnell receives injection

Tue, 01 Apr 2014 09:35:50 -0700

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured right elbow Tuesday, April 1, and he'll rest for roughly two weeks before undergoing more evaluation and determining if he'll need to have surgery. RP Jose Valverde is expected to close with Parnell out. Parnell blew his save chance against the Washington Nationals on opening day Monday, March 31.

Mets | Bobby Parnell out for a while with elbow issue

Tue, 01 Apr 2014 09:16:30 -0700

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) is dealing with an incomplete tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow, and he'll need "complete rest" for two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Parnell hasn't been able to stay healthy in his short time as the Mets' closer. Rubin suggests that Parnell will be out for an extended amount of time, since he won't be throwing at all for two weeks. It's likely we won't see Parnell back for at least a month and probably more. Jose Valverde, who impressed the club this spring, is expected to take over the ninth-inning duties. He should now be owned in all leagues. Vic Black (currently in the minors) and Jeurys Familia could also factor in down the road if Papa Grande falters.

Mets | Bobby Parnell's velocity a concern?

Mon, 31 Mar 2014 13:05:47 -0700

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell's fastball was showing no movement in his blown save against the Washington Nationals Monday, March 31, according to a scout.

Fantasy Tip: Remember, Parnell is coming off offseason neck surgery, and the velocity and movement on his fastball has been somewhat of a concern this spring. There's a good chance his arm isn't where it needs to be just yet. Jose Valverde is the primary setup man and could fall into some early-season save chances if Parnell's issues become more of a problem.
