The New York Mets have released RP Jose Valverde.

New York Mets RP Jose Valverde will pitch in a save situation if one arises Friday, May 23, because RP Jenrry Mejia worked back-to-back games the last two days for the first time since 2010.
Fantasy Tip: Mejia is the clear long-term option as closer for New York. He's really the only one in this bullpen owning for the time being.

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia is expected to be used in back-to-back days soon, since the team wants to be able to use him often if they plan to name him the closer eventually. Manager Terry Collins said he might use Mejia in back-to-back games this weekend. "He hasn't been back-to-back in four years, so we've got to be careful," Collins said. "... For sure, if it's not this weekend, next week he's got to go back-to-back sometime." Mejia pitched Thursday, May 15, so RPs Daisuke Matsuzaka or Jose Valverde will pitch in a save situation if one arises Friday, May 16.
Fantasy Tip: The Mets are clearly grooming Mejia to be their long-term closer of the future. He should be owned everywhere at this point.

Updating a previous item, New York Mets RP Kyle Farnsworth refused an outright assignment to the minor leagues Wednesday, May 14, and elected free agency instead. "Hopefully find a team to play against this team," Farnsworth said. "I'm very bitter right now." The Mets saved around $750,000 by cutting Farnsworth now, since the signed an advance letter of consent before the year, allowing the team to avoid paying his full contract if he was gone before the 45th day he was on the roster.
Fantasy Tip: Jeurys Familia is now considered the favorite to take over the vacant closer role for New York, with Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jose Valverded looming as possibilities if he falters. Familia should now be owned in all leagues.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said the closer situation is being determined on a game-by-game basis with RP Kyle Farnsworth having a heavy workload recently. Collins said RPs Jose Valverde, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jeurys Familia will all be under consideration for a save Tuesday, May 13.
Fantasy Tip: Farnsworth is on a slippery slope right now and could be one blown save or poor outing away from being demoted. If you're looking for long-term possibilities for saves on this club, Familia is probably your best bet.

New York Mets RP Kyle Farnsworth was hunched over and shaking his forearm after the game Monday, April 21, but the team said their new closer is "fine." Farnsworth acknowledged flexing forearm after his save Monday, but he said it's just a sign of being "old." He might not be available to close Tuesday, April 22, because he's been warmed up frequently recently.
Fantasy Tip: That's not what you want to hear from a 38-year-old reliever that was just put into the closing role. Don't lose sight of Jose Valverde or Jeurys Familia, who could see save opportunities if Farnsworth breaks down health-wise.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins told RP Jose Valverde that he wants him to use his split-fingered fastball more often, and Valverde agreed it was a good idea. Valverde was demoted from the closer's role Sunday, April 20, after allowing four home runs in his last three outings.
Fantasy Tip: Valverde loses appeal now that he's in a setup role for the Mets. However, Farnsworth's leash probably isn't that long, either, so it's conceivable that Papa Grande could win the role back, especially if he appeases Collins by using the splitter more frequently.

The New York Mets named RP Kyle Farnsworth as the team's closer Sunday, April 20.
Fantasy Tip: Farnsworth should be owned in all leagues. Get him into your lineups. Jose Valverde will likely see late inning bullpen work and is probably going to lose some of his fantasy baseball value as a result of this move. For more on this situation, go to our Closer Depth Charts.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said RP Jose Valverde remains the team's closer after allowing home runs to three of the last eight batters he's faced. Valverde gave up two home runs with a five-run lead in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, April 16. His ERA has risen to 6.14.
Fantasy Tip: It's way too soon to start looking for a change at the back end of the Mets' bullpen. Valverde will be prone to the long ball, but he's earned a little more rope to start the season. New York doesn't have a wealth of other options with closing experience, either.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, April 8. He'll miss the rest of the 2014 season.
Fantasy Tip: This leaves a giant vacuum in the Mets' SV picture, which is currently being filled by Jose Valverde. This gives him some more leeway, and he's looked decent lately. But for the rest of the season, he's a shaky bet. Others, including Jeurys Familia, Gonzalez Germen and Vic Black or someone not currently on the club could chime in. Valverde is best used as a third mixed closer. Be careful.
