New York Mets manager Terry Collins said RP Jose Valverde remains the team's closer after allowing home runs to three of the last eight batters he's faced. Valverde gave up two home runs with a five-run lead in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, April 16. His ERA has risen to 6.14.
Fantasy Tip: It's way too soon to start looking for a change at the back end of the Mets' bullpen. Valverde will be prone to the long ball, but he's earned a little more rope to start the season. New York doesn't have a wealth of other options with closing experience, either.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, April 8. He'll miss the rest of the 2014 season.
Fantasy Tip: This leaves a giant vacuum in the Mets' SV picture, which is currently being filled by Jose Valverde. This gives him some more leeway, and he's looked decent lately. But for the rest of the season, he's a shaky bet. Others, including Jeurys Familia, Gonzalez Germen and Vic Black or someone not currently on the club could chime in. Valverde is best used as a third mixed closer. Be careful.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said he'll likely mix and match with eighth-inning setup duties. RP Kyle Farnsworth is a possibility, but so are RPs Jeurys Familia and Scott Rice, among others. The Mets will not immediately look to sign another late-inning reliever available on the free-agent market just yet. New York will also consider promoting SPs Rafael Montero or Jacob deGrom for a bullpen role, but it's unlikely to happen soon.
Fantasy Tip: The only thing really clear for now is that Jose Valverde is the team's closer with Bobby Parnell (elbow) out. That could change, too, but based on Papa Grande's performance this spring and on opening day, he'll have a little rope to play with.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed Wednesday, April 2, that RP Jose Valverde is the team's closer with RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) sidelined.
Fantasy Tip: This was fully expected. Valverde should now be owned in all leagues.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured right elbow Tuesday, April 1, and he'll rest for roughly two weeks before undergoing more evaluation and determining if he'll need to have surgery. RP Jose Valverde is expected to close with Parnell out. Parnell blew his save chance against the Washington Nationals on opening day Monday, March 31.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) is dealing with an incomplete tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow, and he'll need "complete rest" for two weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Parnell hasn't been able to stay healthy in his short time as the Mets' closer. Rubin suggests that Parnell will be out for an extended amount of time, since he won't be throwing at all for two weeks. It's likely we won't see Parnell back for at least a month and probably more. Jose Valverde, who impressed the club this spring, is expected to take over the ninth-inning duties. He should now be owned in all leagues. Vic Black (currently in the minors) and Jeurys Familia could also factor in down the road if Papa Grande falters.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell's fastball was showing no movement in his blown save against the Washington Nationals Monday, March 31, according to a scout.
Fantasy Tip: Remember, Parnell is coming off offseason neck surgery, and the velocity and movement on his fastball has been somewhat of a concern this spring. There's a good chance his arm isn't where it needs to be just yet. Jose Valverde is the primary setup man and could fall into some early-season save chances if Parnell's issues become more of a problem.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said the team plans to be cautious with how they use RP Bobby Parnell, specifically when relating to using for more than two consecutive days early in the season as he returns from surgery to fix a herniated disc in his neck. RP Jose Valverde could see some save opportunities as a result. "You'd like your closer to go three or four in a row before you might think about giving him a day off," Collins said. "(But) we've got to make sure how Bobby feels. After two days in a row, I'll certainly be on top of that."
Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't be taken as a knock against Parnell. In fact, it's good news for his owners. Preserving Parnell early on should benefit his numbers and production over the full season.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said RP Jose Valverde will be the team's primary setup man, and he might spell RP Bobby Parnell in closing situations early in the season.
Fantasy Tip: Valverde has the experience, but he might be on his last MLB tour. The few save chances he might see probably aren't worth rostering him in mixed leagues as Parnell insurance.

The New York Mets brought in RPs Kyle Farnsworth and Jose Valverde as potential insurance options in case RP Bobby Parnell (neck) is not ready for the start of the season.
