Braves | Nick Markakis not playing

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 08:25:42 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis is not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Dan Haren Wednesday, April 15. 2B Kelly Johnson is starting in right field and hitting fifth in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis is likely just receiving an off day in a day game following a night contest. Johnson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) isn't a recommendation at FantasyScore Wednesday. He managed to hit just .220 with six home runs against right-handed pitchers in 2014.

Braves | Nick Markakis opening day status

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 16:22:10 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) said there's a "95% chance" he'll be ready for opening day Monday, April 6, and said he's where he needs to be physically. He and the Braves have said for at least two weeks they were planning on him being ready opening day. Markakis is 2-for-19 with one double and one RBI in six Grapefruit League games entering play Thursday, April 2.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has rarely missed time due to injury in his career. He's reached or exceeded 700 plate appearances the last two years. If he returns to his pre-injury form, he can be a modest across the board contributor worth a late-round selection in mixed leagues.

Braves | Nick Markakis on track for opening day

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:37:13 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis played right field for six innings without issue Tuesday, March 24, and manager Fredi Gonzalez said he was confident Markakis would be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: If you're looking for secure production in the late stages of drafts, Markakis fits the bill. While there is limited upside, he chips in across all fantasy categories and has avoided injury in all but one season during his nine-year career. Continue to check back for updates, but unless there are setbacks, Markakis looks set for opening day.

Braves | Nick Markakis has pair of hits in debut

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 15:50:37 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) had two hits, including a double, in his spring training debut Monday, March 23. He will play right field Tuesday, March 24, too, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We'll see how he feels after running the bases -- the first time he's run the bases in a game in a long time," Gonzalez said. "But it was nice to get him three at-bats. That second at-bat he really smoked that ball."

Fantasy Tip: Markakis is a late-round option in mixed leagues, as he doesn't make a significant impact in any one fantasy category but chips in slightly across them all. Continue to check back for updates, but it appears Markakis is on track to play opening day.

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 09:47:34 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) is expected to be the designated hitter in the spring training game against the Houston Astros Monday, March 23. Markakis took part in batting practice Sunday, March 22, for the third straight day.

Braves | Nick Markakis will see game action soon

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 07:50:13 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) is expected to play in a game within the next few days, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We've got to ramp him up the right way to get into games," Gonzalez said. "I don't know when that will happen. He might come in tomorrow and say, 'Can I get a couple at-bats? Can I go to the Minor Leagues to get some at-bats?'"

Fantasy Tip: Markakis doesn't make a huge impact in any single fantsy category, but he tips the scales a little in them all. Expect his new supporting cast in Atlanta to further contribute to the downward slide in production he has experienced over the past few seasons, though. Markakis is a late-round option in mixed leagues, although, he does hold more value in points leagues, and FantasyScore contests, because he has averaged a .345 on-base percentage and 233 total bases per year over the past four seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis' status for the start of the regular season is uncertain at this point but may not miss a lot of time if he is not ready for the opener. Markakis does not make a big impact in any of the fantasy categories and could be a later-round option for owners on mixed leagues.

Braves | Nick Markakis takes BP

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 14:22:45 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) took batting practice for the first time this spring Friday, March 20, and said he felt good. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team is optimistic that Markakis will be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: While opening day might be a stretch for Markakis with his new squad, he may not miss much time in the season's opening month if he can avoid any setbacks. He's on the wrong side of 30, though, and his move to the National League and away from a hitter's park are drawbacks. He's a boring vet for fantasy purposes, and he's worth no more than a late-round flier to fill out your roster.

Braves | Opening day in question for Nick Markakis

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 12:45:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) may not be ready to play opening day, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. "The neck is fine," Gonzalez said Friday, March 13. "He hasn't done anything because they wanted that neck to heal. We've got to get his legs in shape. He's playing catch. He's progressing every day. Don't know date when he will be able to take swings. You'd hate to have this guy get his neck ready and run him out there and all of a sudden he hurts himself."

Fantasy Tip: Markakis is a viable late-round option in mixed leagues, as he has been a consistent performer throughout his career. However, he might suffer slight regression hitting in a weaker Braves lineup, and Father Time may begin taking a toll with Markakis entering his age-31 season. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery and return timeline, but he doesn't project to miss significant time.

Braves | Nick Markakis nearing spring debut

Sun, 08 Mar 2015 05:08:25 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Nick Markakis (neck) ran the bases Saturday, March 7, and he is swinging and throwing as he recovers from an offseason neck fusion surgery. Markakis said he would be fine with a week's worth of at-bats, and he is targeting Tuesday, March 17, to make his spring debut.

Fantasy Tip: Markakis is a reliable commodity, as he has never significantly deviated from his career averages of 89 runs, 17 home runs, 78 RBI and .290 batting average. However, expect batting in a less potent lineup to hinder his counting stats, and at 31, those career averages are likely ceiling projections. Still, assuming there are no setbacks this spring, Markakis warrants attention in the late middle rounds of mixed drafts.
