Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer said his knees are feeling much better now that he's the team's primary first baseman. "It's funny, I always joke around Kurt and Pinto, I tell them, 'I feel your pain. I've been there before,'" Mauer said. "I'm probably noticing it a lot more than most people. I definitely don't miss getting beat up back there." Mauer has played first five times and has been the designated hitter once in the opening week. He's batting .280 (7-for-25) entering Monday, April 7.

Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer (concussion) was able to face live pitchers in batting practice Saturday, Feb. 22. It was his first time facing professional pitching in just over six months, another milestone in his return from a concussion suffered Aug. 19. "Just like every first spring training day ever," Mauer said. "It seems like the ball is coming in there a lot quicker than it normally does, but it was good. It was good to get out there. Everything went well today."

The Minnesota Twins are one of a handful of teams that might be able to pry free-agent C Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the incumbent Boston Red Sox. The team had to move C Joe Mauer to first base, so they have an opening behind the plate.

A column by ESPN.com baseball writer Buster Olney suggests Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters asked for a contract similar to the eight-year, $184 million deal given to Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer in spring training. Olney said the asking price is liable to come down following Wieters' 2013 season, but it also illustrates the sides being far apart.

The Minnesota Twins announced C Joe Mauer will move to first base in 2014.
Fantasy Tip: This may be Mauer's fantasy swan song in 2014 because once he loses catcher eligibility he will be a fringe fantasy player. He doesn't hit for enough power, especially in his cavernous home park, to be an effective fantasy first baseman. He gains a bit of value for next season because playing first base with catcher eligibility will help keep him healthy and allow for him to need fewer days off.

Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer (concussion) provided some encouraging signs during his workout Thursday, Sept. 19, and the team is optimistic that he will play in the final week of the season. However, Mauer has yet to resume baseball activities, but will shortly. He no longer has headaches or is experiencing concussion-related symptoms. "So there's some positive news on that," general manager Terry Ryan said. "Slowly and surely he's getting better and today was one of the better days. He'll be back at the stadium tomorrow. We'll take him when we can get him. He didn't do any baseball activity but he did some of the leg work and that type of stuff. That's better than I've been telling you. He's making some progress."
Fantasy Tip: Hold onto him if you must, but we don't see Mauer making any real impact to push your fantasy squad over the hump to capture that elusive title. It's probably best to look elsewhere in this final week and a half.
