Twins | Joe Mauer reaches safely again

Wed, 04 May 2016 23:58:56 -0700

Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer reached safely for the 28th consecutive game Wednesday, May 4, against the Houston Astros, the second-longest streak to start a season in franchise history. It is also the longest streak in the majors this season.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer has re-emerged as a must-start across all fantasy formats and in DFS play after a couple of down years by his standards. He is hitting .323, which is 10 points higher than his career average. Welcome back, Mr. Mauer.

Mariners | Seth Smith an on-base machine

Mon, 02 May 2016 17:52:42 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith ranked second amongst American League players through Sunday, May 1, with a .440 on-base percentage. He sits only behind Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer, who leads the league with a .459 clip.

Fantasy Tip: Smith had a very uneventful first season with the Mariners in 2015, but the nine-year veteran could have something to offer fantasy owners in all leagues if he keeps it up. Of course, it's reasonable to be skeptical if he can keep it up, but Smith has had some success before, and at the very least, has shown enough to indicate he can stick on rosters in deep leagues.

Twins | Three hits for Joe Mauer

Sun, 01 May 2016 16:50:04 -0700

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in a 6-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers Sunday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: His power has deteriorated, but he can certainly help bolster your team batting average with his .337 mark.

Twins | Joe Mauer, Kurt Suzuki resting

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 08:38:02 -0700

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer and C Kurt Suzuki are out of the lineup against Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg Sunday, April 24. 1B Byung Ho Park will bat cleanup and play first base and C J.R. Murphy will start behind the plate and bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer is batting .328 through 18 games but is receiving the day off because the game is in a National League stadium and Byung Ho Park is getting the start at first base. Murphy is just 2-for-26 and is not a recommended fantasy option this afternoon versus Strasburg.

Twins | Joe Mauer swinging hot bat

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 16:36:16 -0700

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a walk in a 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals Sunday, April 10, raising his average to .400.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer's average is nice, but he has just one extra-base hit and two RBI. Try shopping him while he boasts a lofty average.

Twins | Joe Mauer expected to bat second

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 09:13:16 -0700

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer likely will spend most of his time batting second in the starting lineup during the early part of the season, according manager Paul Molitor.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer should post a solid batting average this season but has not hit more than 10 home runs since 2009. Mauer could be a late-round option in deeper mixed leagues but will have the most value in AL-only leagues.

Twins | Joe Mauer feeling great

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 12:01:03 -0800

Minnesota Twins C Joe Mauer doesn't deny that he has suffered from blurry vision at times after a concussion in 2013, but he said he is feeling much better heading into this season. Mauer plans to continue to use sunglasses at the plate to cut down on glare. "I'm excited about the progress I've made in the last two years," Mauer said. "I'm feeling great, and I'm excited to get out there and prove that. I feel great. It was a struggle at times, but I guess the message we're trying to get out there is how good I'm feeling and how far I've come."

Fantasy Tip: Despite Mauer's optimism, the fact remains that he has limited power, and his batting average continues to slip with age. He offers very little as a fantasy first baseman, and he's best left as corner infield insurance in AL-only leagues.

Twins | Joe Mauer's concussions still a problem?

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 13:31:56 -0800

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer hasn't suffered a concussion since 2013, but lingering symptoms have left his vision blurry at the plate occasionally the last two years. As a result, he'll experiment with wearing sunglasses for the first time this year to improve his pitch tracking later this month in spring training. Bright sunshine sometimes caused his blurred vision. Mauer's batting average has fallen the last two seasons, and he struck out a career-high 112 times in 2015. However, he reports he's been symptom-free working out the last three months.

Fantasy Tip: Soaring ground-ball rates have already capped Mauer's ability to hit for power in a pitcher's park. His inability to make consistent hard contact could be a byproduct of his vision issues. Either way, an aging Mauer offers very little fantasy value, especially at a position typically associated with monster power.

Twins | Joe Mauer unlikely to return to catching

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 11:44:22 -0800

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said the team would consider moving 1B Joe Mauer back behind the plate if he ever received medical clearance from a doctor to play the position. However, Ryan added that he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if Mauer had suffered another concussion from taking a foul tip off his mask or getting involved in a collision.

Fantasy Tip: Mauer, who will turn 33 this April, lost much of his value in fantasy baseball once he stopped qualifying as a catcher. He hit .265 with 10 home runs and 66 RBIs in 158 regular-season games last year and isn't much more than a bench player in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues at this stage of his career.

Twins | Joe Mauer not in lineup Sunday

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 11:59:40 -0700

Minnesota Twins 1B Joe Mauer is not in the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Johnny Cueto Sunday, Oct. 4. 1B Kennys Vargas is playing first base and batting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Vargas ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is batting .247 with five home runs and 17 RBIs through 171 at-bats this season. Mauer ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is out of the lineup as a result of the Twins getting eliminated from playoff contention following a loss to the Royals Saturday, Oct. 3.
