Red Sox | Prefer Grady Sizemore as corner OF

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 13:51:14 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said the club views OF Grady Sizemore as a better fit for a corner outfield spot than in center field. Sizemore, however, isn't as comfortable in left or right field as he is in center yet.

Fantasy Tip: Jackie Bradley Jr. is a much better option in terms of defense and range. Sizemore's brittle past and more advanced age play into this thinking; there's a chance this may affect Sizemore's PT as the year goes on, but even after Shane Victorino (hamstring) returns, he'll remain at least a semi-regular part of this lineup, especially following Daniel Nava's demotion.

Red Sox | Outfielders struggling

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 11:00:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Grady Sizemore is hitless in his last 13 at-bats to drop his average to .213. He has just one extra-base hit in his last 11 games, in which he's hitting .128 (5-for-39). OF Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitting .229 and has struck out once every three at-bats this year. OF Jonny Gomes is hitting .213 and has 19 strikeouts in 47 at-bats. OF Mike Carp is hitting .250 in 24 at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: With Shane Victorino (hamstring) set to return this week, expect John Farrell to use the extra body as a way to mix and match his outfielders in order to give them some rest. Bradley and Sizemore figure to remain as regulars, but their playing time may fluctuate more frequently when Victorino is back.

Red Sox | Jackie Bradley could earn CF job

Thu, 10 Apr 2014 17:17:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Grady Sizemore is making his first ever start in left field Thursday, April 10, with OF Jackie Bradley Jr. getting the nod in center. Manager John Farrell isn't committing this arraignment permanently, since the team likes to get OF Jonny Gomes some playing time in left field. How well Bradley continues to play might determine how often Farrell deploys this alignment. Bradley has a slash line of .400/.478/.978 this year and is 6-for-12 with two doubles, four runs, four RBIs and three walks in the last four games. Sizemore has had some defensive lapses lately. If the Red Sox continue to start Sizemore and Bradley when OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) returns, it could mean a loss of playing time for Gomes and OF Daniel Nava, who has had a slow start to the season.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley should be owned in all leagues now that he's gotten his opportunity this year and is running with it. Sizemore's defensive shortcomings in center will help Bradley's cause.

Red Sox | Jackie Bradley Jr. altering plans

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 06:05:59 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Jackie Bradley Jr. has begun to alter the plans for the team's outfield. OF Grady Sizemore has hit well, but his defense has been suspect due to some late breaks. Bradley is hitting .400 and is 5-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The team may have to install an outfield rotation when OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) returns.

Red Sox | Sticking with committee approach at leadoff

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 14:08:35 -0700

The Boston Red Sox will continue to approach their leadoff spot in a committee approach. OFs Jonny Gomes and Daniel Nava are likely to continue switching off at the top of the order, and OF Grady Sizemore could also see some time there. Nava is hitting only .138 (4-for-29) with a .219 on-base percentage, and manager John Farrell said he prefers to keep 2B Dustin Pedroia in the No. 2 spot.

Red Sox | Grady Sizemore to be on conservative schedule

Fri, 28 Mar 2014 12:42:46 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said OF Grady Sizemore will remain on a conservative scheduled in the first month of the season, meaning he's unlikely to play more than three games in a row. He'll receive rest based on matchups and other factors.

Fantasy Tip: This is another reminder that Sizemore hasn't played in the bigs in two full seasons. Don't expect big-time production right off the bat, but if he can stay healthy early on, he could see more consistent PT and sink into a nice flow.

Red Sox | Grady Sizemore the starting CF

Fri, 28 Mar 2014 08:28:27 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell announced Friday, March 28, that OF Grady Sizemore will open the season as the team's starting center fielder after he passed all the physical tests that the team gave him this spring. Sizemore hit .333 with a home run in camp. OF Jackie Bradley Jr. will start the season at Triple-A Pawtucket after hitting .158 with a team-high 17 strikeouts this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Sizemore's comeback story has been one of the best feel-good stories of spring training. Knee and other injuries derailed a once promising career, but he's back, and he has a starting gig. Whether his body can hold up over the course of the season is another question, but for now, he should be owned in all leagues, at least as outfield depth.

Red Sox | Grady Sizemore wouldn't hit leadoff

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 13:09:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Grady Sizemore won't primarily hit leadoff if he makes the team as the starting center fielder. Manager John Farrell said OFs Daniel Nava and Shane Victorino are his top choices at leadoff because of their on-base skills. Sizemore would bat lower in the lineup. "I think we probably see him middle to where he's at (tonight), in that 5-6 range, in the lineup initially," Farrell said. "We want to take advantage of Nava's on-base abilities, what Shane does in the two-hole, particularly. That's what's going into it, in addition to (Sizemore's) time down and the reps that would be had as the leadoff guy."

Fantasy Tip: It's looking more plausible that Sizemore takes the starting duties away from Jackie Bradley Jr. at this point. An official announcement is expected soon. If Sizemore wins the job, look to pick him up in all leagues.

Red Sox | Grady Sizemore continues to shine in CF competition

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 15:34:41 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Grady Sizemore hit a monster home run in the game Tuesday, March 25, and he may be just a few days away from claiming the starting center field job from OF Jackie Bradley Jr. Manager John Farrell is looking to see if Sizemore comes out of his next few games completely healthy. Sizemore is 10-for-33 in 10 spring games. Bradley went 0-for-4 Tuesday and is 9-for-52 (.173) in 17 spring games with 16 strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: It's looking increasingly likely that Sizemore wins this job, meaning Bradley would start in the minors. If Sizemore is still available in your mixed league, he's worth a shot.

Red Sox | Jackie Bradley losing CF competition?

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 15:15:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox OF Jackie Bradley Jr. has become the underdog in the competition for the starting center field duties with OF Grady Sizemore having a very nice spring. Bradley still has minor league options and is 8-for-40 (.200) with four doubles and a triple in 13 spring games. "He's a smart guy. He knows exactly the situation he's in," manager John Farrell said. "He's asked about it daily and he's not afraid of who he is as a player. He's not trying to be Jacoby Ellsbury or anybody else. He's Jackie Bradley trying to be the best he can. He's going about it the absolute right way."

Fantasy Tip: Farrell has yet to announce who the leader in the competition is, but as long as Sizemore passes his physical test by playing in three straight games this weekend, it would seem to be his job to lose. Don't reach for Bradley in drafts. It wouldn't be a bad idea to put Sizemore on your radar in deep mixed leagues as a flier.
