Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler earns another save

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 05:20:44 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies Friday, June 24, to pick up his 16th save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler has been pitching well over the last few weeks and had dropped his ERA to 2.43. He should continue to be Arizona's closer and is still a solid starting option in most fantasy leagues.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler's streak ends

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 23:15:38 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler blew his first save Thursday, June 23, after converting 43 consecutive opportunities dating back to May 29, 2015. He didn't allow an earned run, but he allowed a hit and a walk while fanning two in 1 2/3 innings and recorded the win.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler doesn't have electric numbers, but he has struck out six in 4 2/3 innings the last week. His lack of K's and 1.36 WHIP are what keep him relegated to a second reliever in fantasy.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler continues streak

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 15:45:10 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler pitched a scoreless ninth inning Monday, June 20, versus the Philadelphia Phillies to pick up his 15th save of the season. It was also his 43rd consecutive save, which is the seventh-best streak all-time. Former RP Grant Balfour is next on the list with 44 straight saves.

Fantasy Tip: While he's not the ideal fantasy option at closer due to a low number of strikeouts and a higher-than-desired WHIP, Ziegler just continues to get the job done in Arizona, which is how he's been able to craft together such an impressive streak. He's become one of the more consistent closers in the National League.

Diamondbacks | Arizona relievers of interest

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 09:48:14 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RPs Brad Ziegler and Daniel Hudson are generating trade interest from other teams, according to general manager Dave Stewart. The Diamondbacks will consider contract extensions with both relievers before the trade deadline.

Fantasy Tip: Despite not having typical closer stuff (5.2 K/9), Ziegler has been effective in the ninth-inning role with 13 saves and a 2.93 ERA after breaking out for 30 closures in 2015. He relies on deception and ground balls for his success. It looks as though the D-backs don't have intentions of making him available this summer.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler earns 10th save

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 16:46:08 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler earned his franchise-record 38th straight save against the Houston Astros Thursday, June 2. It was Ziegler's 10th save of the season. He has the longest active saves streak among relievers.

Fantasy Tip: The sidearming Ziegler had 30 saves for the Snakes in 2015 and has plenty of rope in the ninth inning. He's more of a No. 2 or 3 fantasy closer, though, because of his lackluster career 5.9 K/9. He doesn't throw hard but relies on deception and ground balls to succeed.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler knocked around by Friars

Sun, 29 May 2016 05:35:23 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler allowed three runs -- one unearned -- on three hits in the ninth inning during the Diamondbacks' 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: It was a non-save situation, which is often cited as a tough spot for closers, and we often see them post sub-par results. Still, Ziegler has allowed five runs -- one unearned -- through his past four innings, and opponents have posted a .389/.476/.444 slash line against him. If Ziegler continues to struggle, Daniel Hudson or Tyler Clippard could assume the ninth-inning gig, and both are potential grabs for saves chasers, and at worst, it is a situation to monitor.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler says fingers are fine

Mon, 16 May 2016 15:00:11 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler (fingers) said his fingers are fine Monday, May 16, after being hit by a ball in the ninth inning of the game Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Ziegler to take the hill if a save situation presents itself Monday. He has 37 saves over the past two seasons, and while his strikeouts (5.5 K/9) and WHIP (1.65) leave a lot to be desired and limit him to being a low-end reliever, Ziegler hasn't blown a save since May 27, 2015. He appears relatively secure in his closer gig, too.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler with save streak

Mon, 09 May 2016 18:06:50 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler has converted 35 consecutive saves, which is the longest active streak in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: When you think of shut-down closers, you're likely going to name 25 pitchers before giving Ziegler a thought. He doesn't strike out many batters, and his 1.60 WHIP implies that he has been pretty lucky this season. He still gets the job done. However, you might mention this streak to your league mates to see if you can sell high because his WHIP is so high and his dangerous home park for pitchers.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler collects first save

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 16:35:07 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler converted on his first save opportunity of the season Tuesday, April 12, versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. He gave up one run on one hit in the ninth hitting, recording one strikeout as well.

Fantasy Tip: Although it's only his first, Ziegler should get plenty more on a very competitive Diamondbacks ballclub. Despite a poor strikeout rate throughout his career, the 36-year-old submariner is still capable of posting fine numbers at closer.

Diamondbacks | Brad Ziegler an oddity among closers

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 14:56:41 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler averages 84.6 mph on his fastball and has finished in the bottom 30 of 268 pitchers with a minimum of 60 innings thrown in both strikeouts per nine innings (4.76) and strikeout percentage (13.7%). The sidearmer thrives on the downward movement of his pitches, and he's had the highest downward movement in baseball each year since 2011. Ziegler became one of just five pitchers with 30 saves and a strikeout percentage below 14% in 2015 since 2000. Ziegler also ranked first in ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio (9.87).

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler surely earned the closer role after 30 saves last year. But his inability to miss many bats could catch up to him in 2016, and the D-backs have plenty of options behind him in Tyler Clippard, Daniel Hudson or even Silvino Bracho. Ziegler is a low-end closing option. Almost half of his career saves came last season.
