Red Sox | Brad Ziegler takes the loss

Thu, 28 Jul 2016 22:50:00 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Brad Ziegler allowed two unearned runs on three hits in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Thursday, July 28.

Fantasy Tip: It was Ziegler's first blown save since joining Boston and his second straight loss. He should remain the closer for now, but Craig Kimbrell is set to return soon and should reclaim the gig in short order.

Red Sox | Brad Ziegler in line to close

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 09:38:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Brad Ziegler would be the team's first choice to close games with RP Koji Uehara (pectoral) injured and RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) on the disabled list. Ziegler had 18 saves for the Arizona Diamondbacks this year before being traded to Boston July 9. RP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) is also expected to return from the DL Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: It's unknown how much time Uehara will miss, but he's no spring chicken and has a history of injuries, so grab Ziegler immediately if he's available in your league. Ziegler, a soft-tossing sidearmer, isn't your prototypical closer with just 6.0 strikeouts per nine innings, but he has gotten the job done in recent years and deserves to be owned with Uehara and Kimbrel sidelined.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara the primary closer

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 19:02:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara will be the closer while RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is sidelined, and RP Brad Ziegler will close on days when Uehara is not available, manager John Farrell said Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Both Uehara and Ziegler are still worth adding if you need saves, but Uehara is obviously the preferred option.

Red Sox | Brad Ziegler, Koji Uehara to close

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 11:04:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox RPs Brad Ziegler and Koji Uehara will both receive opportunities to close games while RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is on the disabled list, according to manager John Farrell. However, Ziegler is not expected to join the club in time for the game against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler went 2-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 18 saves in 36 appearances for Arizona, with 15 walks and 27 strikeouts over 38 1/3 innings, while Uehara is 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA and three saves through 35 games, with nine walks and 46 strikeouts over 32 2/3 innings. Although Ziegler's strikeout totals are low for a closer and Uehara has posted a 7.00 ERA in 10 games over the past four weeks, both relievers should be rostered in AL-only fantasy leagues and by owners in mixed formats who are desperate for saves.

Diamondbacks | Arizona trades Brad Ziegler

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 05:20:25 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler was traded to the Boston Red Sox Saturday, July 9, in exchange for P Jose Almonte and INF Luis Alejandro Basabe.

Fantasy Tip: Daniel Hudson and Tyler Clippard are both candidates to take over the closer role with Ziegler no longer on the team. Each pitcher has recorded one save so far this season, so owners should monitor the situation to see which pitcher receives the next save opportunity. Owners in NL-only leagues should pick up either pitcher if they are available. Hudson and Clippard will have value in mixed leagues if they become the new closer for Arizona.

Red Sox | Boston adds Brad Ziegler

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 05:13:04 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler was acquired by the Boston Red Sox Saturday, July 9, in exchange for P Jose Almonte and INF Luis Alejandro Basabe.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler's acquisition was made after Craig Kimbrel suffered his injury, so there is a chance Ziegler could be used as the closer if Kimbrel is sidelined for a while. He likely will be used as a setup man once everyone is healthy. Owners in AL-only leagues should look to add Ziegler to their roster, while owners in mixed leagues should consider keeping him even if he does not close.
