Mon, 31 Mar 2014 19:35:25 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) threw long-toss in Miami Monday, March 31, and it was the first time he threw from as far as 150 feet. His plan is to go to extended spring training at the end of April, and play until June. He would then join Class A Grand Junction with the intention of being ready to pitch for the big club by season's end.

Rockies | Rafael Betancourt hoping to pitch in 2014

Sat, 11 Jan 2014 11:53:09 -0800

Free-agent RP Rafael Betancourt (Rockies) will visit Dr. James Andrews next week and should be cleared to resume throwing shortly thereafter. Betancourt said the rehab on his surgically-repaired elbow is going well and he plans to visit the Colorado Rockies at spring training camp for two weeks in March. He has not given up on pitching during the 2014 season and said that if he is able to play, he only wants to pitch for the Rockies. The Los Angeles Dodgers had expressed interest in Betancourt but he said he couldn't see himself pitching anywhere else.

Rockies | Decline option on Rafael Betancourt

Tue, 29 Oct 2013 14:33:22 -0700

The Colorado Rockies declined to pick up RP Rafael Betancourt's option for the 2014 season Tuesday, Oct. 29, making him a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: This signals the shift to Rex Brothers as the closer of the future. Brothers performed admirably with Betancourt injured this year and down the stretch. Look to him as a midrange closer option in 2014.

Rockies | Rafael Betancourt expecting bad news

Mon, 26 Aug 2013 16:15:17 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) underwent an MRI Monday, Aug. 26, and expects "bad news," likely a torn ulnar collateral ligament. That would require Tommy John surgery and likely cost him at least the majority of the 2014 season. The 38-year-old said he's uncertain whether he'd come back following surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Colorado is all but guaranteed to reject their end of a $4.25 mutual option for 2014 if he goes under the knife, which would leave Rex Brothers in line to close next season.

Rockies | Rafael Betancourt headed to DL

Fri, 23 Aug 2013 08:38:51 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) may have torn his elbow ligament and will undergo an MRI exam Monday, Aug. 26. He will land on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously this means the Rockies will not be trading Betancourt, who was put on revocable waivers this week. Rex Brothers has a good shot of finishing out the year as the club's closer. Hold onto Betancourt until we know the results of his MRI exam, but it doesn't look good.

Rockies | Rafael Betancourt leaves with injury

Thu, 22 Aug 2013 20:07:22 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) left the team's game early Thursday, Aug. 22, because of an elbow injury. He likely will have to go on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: If Betancourt has to go on the disabled list, there is a chance he may not come back this season. Owners should hang onto him until they get a clear timetable. Rex Brothers likely will regain the closer role and should be picked up in leagues if he is available.
