Tampa Bay Rays RP Grant Balfour said his mechanics have been off the last few games.
Fantasy Tip: He has given up four runs in the last three outings and has struggled all season. There's still a chance he could figure into the closing mix before the season is up if he rights himself.

Tampa Bay Rays RP Grant Balfour revealed that pitch-tipping may have been one of the reasons for his struggles this season. He has made recent adjustments to his delivery to correct the problem. "I'm not saying I pitched the best but it doesn't help when someone knows what's coming," Balfour said. "It could be an issue. It's definitely cleaned up, so we'll find out." In his first appearance of the second half, Balfour tossed a perfect inning against the Minnesota Twins Friday, July 18.

Tampa Bay Rays RP Grant Balfour pitched his best outing of the season Thursday, June 19, according to manager Joe Madden. Madden said Balfour could return to the closer role organically, but it will not be orchestrated.
Fantasy Tip: The Rays have a lot invested in Balfour, so his strong outing is encouraging for him getting more save opportunities. Jake McGee and Juan Oviedo have recorded the team's last two saves and are worth roster spots if you are chasing saves.

Updating a previous report, the Tampa Bay Rays don't have a set closer, according to manager Joe Maddon. He will reach to game situations, meaning anyone, including deposed closer Grant Balfour, could be called upon.
Fantasy Tip: Balfour is expected to regain the job if he does well in the coming weeks. He should be retained in most leagues. For now, it's an annoying cluster likely led by Joel Peralta and Jake McGee.

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said he expects RP Grant Balfour to see more save chances later this season. Balfour is 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA in 24 games this year, and he has nine saves in 11 chances. He has walked 20 in 23 2/3 innings.
Fantasy Tip: Balfour probably shouldn't be outright dropped in deep mixed leagues and AL-only leagues just yet. Maddon will allow for bullpen competition in case an option sticks out for the ninth in the near future. Based on Maddon's statements, it looks like he'll consider handing the role back to Balfour eventually.

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon changed his tune Monday, June 9, and said the team will now go with a closer-by-committee. RP Grant Balfour and the rest of the relievers will be involved.
Fantasy Tip: Joel Peralta and Jake McGee are the main candidates to receive opportunities to close out games now, but Brad Boxberger, Cesar Ramos and Juan Oviedo might see a chance or two, as well. Peralta should be your first target if you're still searching for saves, then McGee.

Tampa Bay Rays CL Grant Balfour blew his second save of the season Thursday, May 22.
Fantasy Tip: Start picking up Joel Peralta on waivers in deep mixed, AL-only leagues or if you own Balfour. Balfour is simply not getting it done and has walked nine batters and allowed seven hits in eight innings this month.
