Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez has back tightness

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 10:29:55 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez (back) is dealing with lower back tightness, but it isn't expected to keep him from playing in the team's season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Australia this weekend. "I need to rest, get off my feet," said Gonzalez, who was removed from Thursday night's 4-2 exhibition win against Team Australia in the fourth inning. "I've done a lot of walking around the city. I'll be good (for Saturday night). I'm positive I'll feel better tomorrow."

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, this injury isn't very serious, but it's something to keep an eye on as Gonzalez ages. If it's something that lingers through the season, it could affect his already waning power numbers.

Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez focused on taking walks

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 13:36:06 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez has four walks in 26 plate appearances this spring, and he's looking to be more selective this season. "I'm not going to go up there looking for a walk, but I do think I can get back to walking more," Gonzalez said. He led the majors in walks in 2009 with 119 but had only 89 combined walks in the last two years. Gonzalez attributed his lack of walks the last two seasons on him being in better lineups.

Fantasy Tip: More walks should help A-Gon's value in on-base percentage leagues, and it should help buoy his average, if he can accomplish it. His peak power years are in the past, but there may still be a little left.

Dodgers | Yasiel Puig could lead off

Mon, 03 Feb 2014 15:33:19 -0800

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly admitted that he will consider using OF Yasiel Puig in the leadoff spot this season. Such a move would provide better right-lefty balance in the lineup and move OF Carl Crawford further down. Crawford would bat second, SS Hanley Ramirez third and 1B Adrian Gonzalez fourth. Puig had a .391 on-base percentage last year, which was second on the team. Puig was in the leadoff spot for 28 games last year and had a slash line of .333/.409/.618 with eight of his 19 home runs.

Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez a changed hitter

Mon, 21 Oct 2013 14:02:02 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez has changed his plate discipline in recent seasons; he led the National League in walks in 2009 (119) and was third in 2010 (93) but walked just 74 times in 2011 , 42 times in 2012 and 47 times this year. A shoulder injury forced Gonzalez to attempt to pull the ball more often to generate more power. "He's a different hitter," hitting coach Mark McGwire said. "He's just a different hitter. He used to hit home runs to left center field, center field and because of the surgery, he's lost that. It's something he's working at. He's two years out since the surgery, and he's changed his approach." However, Gonzalez's isolated power is also down since his surgery, but he's swinging at over 36 percent of pitches outside of the strike zone compared to just over 26 percent in 2009.

Fantasy Tip: Keep this in mind as draft season approaches in 2014. A-Gon is unlikely to approach a 30-homer season again, and his average could easily come down a level, as well, if the walks continue to plummet. At a position known for producing power, Gonzalez no longer looks to be that type of player.

Fantasy Tip: Now that the Dodgers have clinched the division, expect the Blue to rest their stars more frequently in this final week, including A-Gon.

Sat, 03 Aug 2013 13:17:31 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez was given the day off against the Chicago Cubs Saturday, Aug. 3. Manager Don Mattingly had planned to give Gonzalez an off day Sunday, Aug. 4, but moved it up one day after talking with him. "Seeing him this morning, he looked a little stiff and stuff," Mattingly said. "He needed a day and I know if he'd play today he would have been fine."
