The Trenton Times reports Philadlephia Eagles DE Ndukwe Kalu now has a removable cast on his ankle. Coach Andy Reid is hoping to have him back for Sunday's season opener, but that's not likely. Starting OLB Ike Reese had to miss practice due to swollen eye and a concussion, but he's expected back tomorrow. CB Al Harris sat out yesterday's practice with back spasms. DB Jason Bostic (knee) and WR Gari Scott (shoulder) both returned to practice yesterday for the first time in over a week. Hank Fraley is now expected to be the starter at center for the injured Bubba Miller (on IR) with Jim Pyne backing him up.

Philadelphia Eagles.com reports the team has placed C Bubba Miller (fractured ankle) on the injured reserve list. Hank Fraley and newly signed Jim Pyne will take over the center position. It's not clear who head coach Andy Reid will go with as the starter in next Sunday's opener with St. Louis.

Patrick McManamon reports for the Akron Beacon Journal the Cleveland Browns asked OL Jim Pyne to take a pay cut, before he was eventually released on Wednesday. The Browns offered Pyne an incentive package that would have put him close to his former salary if he played, and Pyne accepted. Pyne then asked that he be guaranteed a roster spot if he took the pay cut. Coach Butch Davis said he could not do that because the Browns do not guarantee money beyond signing bonuses. He then asked to be traded, but the Browns found no takers and Pyne was then let go.

Cleveland.com reports WKNR's Bob Karlovec told them the Cleveland Browns are actively trying to trade OL Jim Pyne. His locker at the Browns training facility in Berea was empty this morning. Browns head coach Butch Davis is expected to address the issue at a news conference this afternoon.

He will not play this weekend. WR JaJuan Dawson (broken hand) has been catching passes with a smaller, softer football. OL Ross Verba (back) wants to play in Friday's pre-season game at Washington, G Tre Johnson (knee surgery) is questionable and OL Jim Pyne's (ankle) status is undecided.

G Jim Pyne sprained his ankle when a teammate fell across it. Coach Butch Davis said it would not be serious, but Pyne said he probably would miss practice time. OL Steve Zahursky (wobbly knee), Everett Lindsay (kicked) and backup T Jeremy McKinney (knee) went to the sidelines as well. "Every time I turned around it seemed like a lineman was down on the ground today," said QB Tim Couch, who threw the ball well.

Right guard is up for grabs, but could be manned by Tre' Johnson if he is taken off the PUP list in time. The Beacon Journal reports one area the Cleveland Browns did not address in the NFL Draft was the offensive line. The current Browns line has Ross Verba and Roman Oben at tackle, Dave Wohlabaugh at center and a crowd of contenders to fight it out at guard, including Jim Pyne, Steve Zahursky, Everett Lindsay, Noel LaMontagne, Brad Bedell and rookie draft pick Paul Zukauskas. Director of football operations Dwight Clark did not rule out taking another look at available free agent offensive linemen. The team has spoken with free agent Tre' Johnson, but agent Greg Ray said he hadn't talked to the Browns since April 12. Since the draft, he said he's spoken to the Falcons, Steelers, Saints and Raiders.

Jeff Schudel reports for the Morning Journal the Cleveland Browns will be getting off to a fresh start under new coach Butch Davis when mini-camp starts on Monday. First impressions will be important and all players start on an even level. For example, S Marquis Smith won't be given preferential treatment over S Earl Little as he was last year as they battle for a starting safety role. Davis wants to see and judge for himself. He expects to experiment some moving players around at different positions. OL Jim Pyne (ACL rehab) will be limited but he will take part in some individual work. In other news, Davis and president Carmen Policy keep talking about June 1 when the next wave of veteran releases will occur. The Browns will be watching closely to see who is released.

Patrick McManamon reports for the Beacon Journal many of the Cleveland Browns injured players from the 2000 season are rehabbing just fine. "Everybody is ahead of schedule," Director of Football Operations Dwight Clark said. QB Tim Couch (thumb) has been throwing for two weeks while his backup Ty Detmer (Achilles') should be ready for mini-camp. OC Jim Pyne (knee) may not be ready for the first mini-camp but will return in time for later mini-camps. Only Errict Rhett (foot), despite doing great in his rehab, is a concern for the team. His type of injury takes a while to come back from and he is going to have the screws removed from his surgically repaired right foot in March. As previously reported he'll be limited for a bit after that.

The 1999 NFL Expansion draft took place this afternoon, and the Cleveland Browns picked and chose from other NFL teams to begin building their initial roster. The team focused heavily on offensive line. C Jim Pyne (Detroit Lions) was their first selection.

The AP reports that sources close to the Browns report that Lions OL Jim Pyne will be the first pick in today's expansion draft. Other players seen in Cleveland today were New England OT Scott Rehberg, Cincinnati WR Damon Gibson (reported earlier), Dallas DE Hurvin McCormack and 49ers OC Steve Gordon. We'll all know soon as the draft gets underway in 40 minutes.
