Atlanta Braves OF B.J. Upton is out of the lineup Wednesday, April 9, and SS Andrelton Simmons took the No. 2 spot in the order, with manager Fredi Gonzalez saying that Simmons doesn't strike out. It's unclear if Upton will be in the No. 2 spot when he returns to the lineup. Upton is tied for the major league lead in strikeouts with 13, and he's hitting just .138. Gonzalez made it sound like the move with Simmons hitting second is temporary.
Fantasy Tip: If Upton keeps this up, he might find himself riding pine more often, as was the case late last season. If you were brave enough to draft him, keep him on the fake pine, too, until he shows some signs of life.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is leaning toward putting OF B.J. Upton second in the batting order and 3B Chris D. Johnson fourth. Upton has a .350 on-base percentage this spring and has stolen four bases in 18 spring games. Johnson only spent 56 of his 514 at-bats at cleanup last season. "I like Chris Johnson (at cleanup)," Gonzalez said. "He gives you good at-bats. And he's a guy that's not going to change his approach. He's going to put the ball in play. He uses the whole field and has some big at-bats."

Atlanta Braves hitting coach Greg Walker is impressed with how much movement OF B.J. Upton has cut out of his swing and stance this spring. He's also gotten rid of the left leg lift and long slide step with his front foot in the batter's box. Upton thinks his swing worsened the last few seasons because he was trying to pull the ball too much.
Fantasy Tip: Most folks probably won't want to come anywhere near drafting Upton this year. That'll put his cost at basement levels, where it isn't a terrible idea to have him as outfield depth in mixed leagues.

Atlanta Braves OF B.J. Upton worked with hitting coach Greg Walker this offseason after he finished the 2013 year with a .184 batting average, nine home runs and a .557 OPS. "The swings I saw work for me," Walker said. "It was a lot different than what we saw last year. It was a lot more simple, with a lot less moving parts." Upton says he put too much pressure on himself in his first season in Atlanta, but the coaching staff contributes it to a breakdown in swing mechanics.

Atlanta Braves 2B Dan Uggla is not on the team's 25-man roster for the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The roster includes slumping OF B.J. Upton and SP Freddy Garcia. SP Paul Maholm also did not make the roster after going 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA on the season. Uggla hit only .122 in 49 at-bats in the season's final month. 2B Elliot Johnson is expected to start at second base in the series.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez expects both OF B.J. Upton and 2B Dan Uggla to be on the postseason roster. "Unless something crazy happens, yeah," Gonzalez said. "I think so." Both Upton and Uggla are hitting under .200 and have been benched recently. Uggla could start or back up 2B Elliot Johnson.

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez is giving 2B Dan Uggla and OF B.J. Upton more opportunities down the stretch, trying to let them work out of their slumps. "B.J. and I have struggled more than we can ever imagine," Uggla said. "Believe me, it's not from a lack of work and effort. We've had so many blisters on our hands from hitting in the cage. But now it's time to stop working on things. You've got to realize who you are as a hitter and what kind of hitter you are and go with it."

Atlanta Braves OF Jordan Schafer (quadriceps) was scratched from the lineup with a left quadriceps contusion Wednesday, Sept. 4. OF B.J. Upton is replacing Schafer in the outfield and is hitting leadoff.

Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward (jaw) will have surgery Thursday, Aug. 22, to fix two fractures in his jaw. He's expected to miss four to six weeks. Since June 9, he was hitting .291/.373/.495 and was .357/.426/.607 in his last 22 games. OFs B.J. Upton and Jordan Schafer or SS Andrelton Simmons are the candidates to move into the leadoff spot with Heyward out.
Fantasy Tip: As David Schoenfield notes, Schafer is probably the biggest beneficiary of PT with Heyward out. The Bravos could also mix in Evan Gattis in the outfield, too.
