Pittsburgh Pirates SS Clint Barmes (groin) is back from the 15-day disabled list and ready to resume his utility role. The team had been using a combination of INFs Michael Martinez, Jayson Nix and Brent Morel while Barmes was away. Manager Clint Hurdle also said Monday, Aug. 25, that Barmes could see starts in the near future to spell 3B/OF Josh Harrison at third base, and SS Jordy Mercer at shortstop.

Pirates | Clint Barmes beginning rehab assignment

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Clint Barmes (groin) will start his rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona Wednesday, Aug. 13, and move to Triple-A Indianapolis. He'll start by playing five innings and work his way to complete games before returning to the Pirates. He's been on the disabled list since July 6 with a groin strain.

Fantasy Tip: Barmes has been inactive for a while, so it'll likely be an extended rehab assignment. When he returns to the Pirates, he'll likely split time with Jordy Mercer at shortstop.

Pirates | Clint Barmes slowly recovering

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Clint Barmes (groin) ran the bases at full speed Friday, Aug. 8, and he will undergo another MRI exam and won't accompany the team on the road next week. Barmes could go on a rehab assignment next week. "There's still some soreness in there," Barmes said. "More than likely, it's not going to go away the rest of the year. But I can play through the soreness that's there now."

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed SS Clint Barmes (groin) on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left groin. The move is retroactive to Monday, June 30. In a corresponding move, INF Michael Martinez has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer took over as the starting shortstop down the stretch last season due to his bat, but the team re-signed SS Clint Barmes because of his defense. The team has Mercer listed as the everyday shortstop for now, with Barnes operating as a mentor and potential safety net incase Mercer fails to smooth rough edges in the field.
