Athletics | Another save for Ryan Madson

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 16:23:57 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson picked up his fourth save in as many chances, allowing one hits in a scoreless ninth inning in a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: You can hang on to Sean Doolittle in deeper mixed and AL-only formats, but Madson looks to be the primary closer in Oakland until further notice.

Athletics | Ryan Madson picks up another save

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 05:52:43 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Seattle Mariners Friday, April 8, to pick up his second save of the season. He struck out two batters during his outing.

Fantasy Tip: Madson has two saves so far this season, but it is not known if he will be the closer moving forward or if he will share time with Sean Doolittle. Owners in mixed leagues could consider adding Madson if he is available because he should continue to see some save opportunities.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle still the closer

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 17:08:50 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle remains the A's closer despite RP Ryan Madson earning a save Wednesday, April 6, according to manager Bob Melvin. However, Melvin said he's open to using both relievers in the role depending on the circumstances. "If there is some matchup in the eighth that would suggest more of a lefty ... we would make an adjustment that way," Melvin said. "But as we sit here Sean's our closer when you're breaking down where our bullpen is."

Fantasy Tip: So basically Doolittle is the preferred ninth-inning option for Melvin, but the skipper isn't afraid to play the matchups and use Madson occasionally to close out games. Doolittle remains a low-end RP2, while Madson gains some value with more save chances expected. Scoop him up immediately if he's still available in your league.

Athletics | Ryan Madson records save

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 23:28:34 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson recorded the last three outs Wednesday, April 6, for his first save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Sean Doolittle pitched the previous two days and appeared to have the night off. Madson should be second fiddle to him, and John Axford, who pitched the eighth inning Wednesday, behind Madson. Doolittle is an RP3 to own for saves, but Madson could figure into a few himself and is worth the handcuff.

Athletics | Ryan Madson expected to be setup man

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:02:54 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson is expected to serve as the eighth-inning setup man for RP Sean Doolittle, with RPs John Axford and Liam Hendriks.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is coming off an injury marred season, so Madson, and in deeper leagues, Axford, makes sense as fantasy handcuffs to Doolittle. Madson could also be useful for his strikeouts abilities in deeper leagues.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle to continue closing for A's

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 19:15:09 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle will serve as the team's closer entering the 2016 season, despite their recent acquisitions of RPs John Axford and Ryan Madson, according to general manager David Forst.

Fantasy Tip: The 29-year-old Doolittle made the 2014 American League All-Star team while saving 22 games but only recorded four saves in 12 games during an injury-plagued 2015 campaign. Axford and Madson will serve primarily as set-up men for the A's, although they could see ninth-inning opportunities if Doolittle struggles, gets hurt or needs an occasional break.

Athletics | Oakland adds Ryan Madson

Sun, 06 Dec 2015 10:18:51 -0800

Free-agent RP Ryan Madson (Royals) signed a three-year contract with the Oakland Athletics Sunday, Dec. 6, worth $22 million. He is expected to be a setup man for the Athletics but could also receive some closing opportunities.

Fantasy Tip: Madson pitched well for the World Series champion Kansas City Royals last season and probably will have a similar role in 2016. Madson should be an option in deeper mixed leagues since there is a chance that he will have some save chances.

Athletics | OAK interested in Ryan Madson

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 17:28:39 -0800

The Oakland Athletics have expressed interest in free-agent RP Ryan Madson (Royals), according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: Madson is expected to be looking for a multi-year deal and he could be used as an alternative closer option to Sean Doolittle if he lands with the A's. He went 1-3 with a 2.13 ERA and three saves in 68 regular-season games for Kansas City in 2015, with 58 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings.

Royals | Wade Davis has stiff back

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 09:07:21 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Wade Davis (back) was held out Thursday, Oct. 1, with a stiff back. RP Ryan Madson was used in the ninth inning instead against the Chicago White Sox. Manager Ned Yost said Davis' back isn't serious.

Fantasy Tip: Davis remains the Royals' closer with Greg Holland (elbow) having Tommy John surgery Friday, but it remains to be seen how much he'll pitch this weekend before the playoffs start.

Royals | Ryan Madson notches save

Sat, 18 Jul 2015 17:35:41 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Ryan Madson notched his first save of the season Saturday, July 18, against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Madson picked up the save in extra innings after Greg Holland blew his third save earlier in the game. Madson's ratios have been solid this season, but unless Holland hits an extended rough patch, Madson's save chances will be few and far between.
