Nationals | Wilson Ramos not starting Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 15:47:19 -0700

Washington Nationals C Wilson Ramos is not starting Saturday, May 28, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Ramos' replacement is C Jose Lobaton, who will bat eighth against Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright.

Fantasy Tip: This is simply a day off for Ramos, who has been in the lineup the entire week and managed at least one hit per game. Lobaton has a few hits but no extra-base power, and that should be a red flag for your DFS lineup. Leave him on the bench.

Nationals | Anthony Rendon out Saturday

Sat, 28 May 2016 15:42:28 -0700

Washington Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon is not in the Saturday, May 28, starting lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals. 3B Stephen Drew will bat seventh against Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright.

Fantasy Tip: This appears to be a simple night off for Rendon, so scratch him from your DFS lineups. Drew is batting .138 at home this season and has a .105 career mark against Wainwright. Leave him on your bench.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright decent in no-decision

Tue, 24 May 2016 00:37:34 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright scattered seven hits and stranded eight runners, while throwing 68 of his 108 pitches for strikes, in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday, May 23. Wainwright did not get the decision.

Fantasy Tip: After a rocky beginning to the year, it looks like Wainwright has stabilized. That should be enough to calm the doubters for now, as it looks like Wainwright is back to pitching strong games. He has increased fantasy value now that the worst of the struggles appears to be over.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright close to previous form

Thu, 19 May 2016 10:49:08 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright said he's as close to his previous form as he has been in more than a year after his start Wednesday, May 18. His curveball was effective, and he had life on his two-seam fastball in his 6 2/3 shutout innings.

"I think it's just a culmination of things we've been doing this whole year," Wainwright said. "We've continued to build my leg strength. We've continued to make little adjustments to my delivery. I've continued to stay positive. There were a lot of good lessons I've learned going through all that process."

Fantasy Tip: It sounds good, but he's not inducing many groundballs, and his K-rate is still a career-low 5.40 per nine innings. His curveball has been bad most of the year, and his fastball command hasn't been there. The amount of hard contact was alarming, but this previous start was a good sign. We still need to see more before jumping back on the bandwagon. He's an option in good matchups in DFS for now.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright pitches well

Wed, 18 May 2016 22:11:01 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Colorado Rockies Wednesday, May 18, to pick up his fourth win of the season. He struck out five batters and walked one during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright did not allow a run in for the first time this season but still has a 5.92 ERA so far this season. He is scheduled to face the Chicago Cubs in his next start and probably should be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright continues to struggle

Fri, 13 May 2016 04:52:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed 11 hits and seven runs, six earned, in five innings of work Thursday, May 12. The Cardinals won, 12-10, over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and improved Wainwright's record to 3-3.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals won, yes, but there remain questions about whether Wainwright is the staff ace he once was. He has had issues this season, but the Cardinals haven't exactly lit the pitching world on fire, either. Whatever the case, this isn't the pitcher who dominated in previous years and your best bet is to leave him on your fantasy bench until he figures out what's going on.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright improving

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:24:26 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while fanning four in six innings to beat the Philadelphia Phillies Monday, May 2. "Everything was good," Wainwright said. " I've got to get the curveball not be so loopy. I expect it to be right and it will be eventually. I was very confident coming into the game. From the first pitch I threw in Arizona, I knew I was on the right track. I'm very close. I really am."

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright allowed fewer hits than innings pitched for the first time this season and reduced his ERA to 6.68. His nine K's in 11 1/3 innings in his last two starts is encouraging as well. Buy low on him now.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright working on mechanics

Mon, 02 May 2016 07:12:35 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright has worked between starts on his mechanics that he admitted have been out of whack because of bad habits or the loss of muscle memory from missing most of last season with an Achilles' injury.

The line-drive rate on balls put in play against Wainwright's fastball jumped from 14.3% in April 2015 to 50% this April. The slugging percentage on his fastball skyrocketed from .125 a year ago to .857 this time. Slugging against his sinker went from .556 to .929. Wainwright said his pitches are consistently hitting the same target, but the target is thigh high in the strike zone. He also said his arm feels as fresh as it has in years.

The Cardinals sent former SP Chris Carpenter tape of Wainwright's recent starts, and Carpenter feels he found some mechanical flaws. He suggested how athletes work on the balls of their feet, and too often Wainwright was rocking back to his heels.

"I watched a lot of video and there's a lot of stuff going on," Carpenter told Post-Dispatch baseball writer Rick Hummel. "There's always adjustments to make every year and you could tell he's a little off. But he feels like he's getting closer. That's one thing about this game. It can humble you in a second. I know and everybody knows about Adam, that he'll find a way to figure it out one way or another. He'll get back on track."

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter is the perfect person to counsel Wainwright, because the two pitchers are so similar. The problem begins and ends with Waino's mechanics. He has lost some zip on his fastball, but he was pitching great last season at about the same velocity before the injury. It may take a couple of starts, but we expect him to get back on track. Wainwright is an excellent buy-low proposition in fantasy.

Cardinals | Waino gets on the board

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 23:53:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed four earned runs, seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday, April 27, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it was good enough to pick up his first win of the season. Wainwright has allowed at least three runs in every start this season.

Fantasy Tip: Waino has struggled mightily, and is a shell of himself. He used to be a Top 20 fantasy option at his position, but now he is more of a middle- to back-end rotation guy for fantasy.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright loses again

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 06:01:02 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings against the San Diego Padres Friday, April 22, to suffer his third loss of the season. He struck out two batters and walked one during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright has struggled so far this season and has allowed 15 runs in the last three games. He also has only nine strikeouts in four starts. He is scheduled to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in his next start, and owners could consider benching him if they have another pitcher with a favorable matchup.
