Cardinals | Adam Wainwright improving

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:24:26 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while fanning four in six innings to beat the Philadelphia Phillies Monday, May 2. "Everything was good," Wainwright said. " I've got to get the curveball not be so loopy. I expect it to be right and it will be eventually. I was very confident coming into the game. From the first pitch I threw in Arizona, I knew I was on the right track. I'm very close. I really am."

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright allowed fewer hits than innings pitched for the first time this season and reduced his ERA to 6.68. His nine K's in 11 1/3 innings in his last two starts is encouraging as well. Buy low on him now.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright working on mechanics

Mon, 02 May 2016 07:12:35 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright has worked between starts on his mechanics that he admitted have been out of whack because of bad habits or the loss of muscle memory from missing most of last season with an Achilles' injury.

The line-drive rate on balls put in play against Wainwright's fastball jumped from 14.3% in April 2015 to 50% this April. The slugging percentage on his fastball skyrocketed from .125 a year ago to .857 this time. Slugging against his sinker went from .556 to .929. Wainwright said his pitches are consistently hitting the same target, but the target is thigh high in the strike zone. He also said his arm feels as fresh as it has in years.

The Cardinals sent former SP Chris Carpenter tape of Wainwright's recent starts, and Carpenter feels he found some mechanical flaws. He suggested how athletes work on the balls of their feet, and too often Wainwright was rocking back to his heels.

"I watched a lot of video and there's a lot of stuff going on," Carpenter told Post-Dispatch baseball writer Rick Hummel. "There's always adjustments to make every year and you could tell he's a little off. But he feels like he's getting closer. That's one thing about this game. It can humble you in a second. I know and everybody knows about Adam, that he'll find a way to figure it out one way or another. He'll get back on track."

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter is the perfect person to counsel Wainwright, because the two pitchers are so similar. The problem begins and ends with Waino's mechanics. He has lost some zip on his fastball, but he was pitching great last season at about the same velocity before the injury. It may take a couple of starts, but we expect him to get back on track. Wainwright is an excellent buy-low proposition in fantasy.

Cardinals | Waino gets on the board

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 23:53:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed four earned runs, seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings Wednesday, April 27, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it was good enough to pick up his first win of the season. Wainwright has allowed at least three runs in every start this season.

Fantasy Tip: Waino has struggled mightily, and is a shell of himself. He used to be a Top 20 fantasy option at his position, but now he is more of a middle- to back-end rotation guy for fantasy.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright loses again

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 06:01:02 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings against the San Diego Padres Friday, April 22, to suffer his third loss of the season. He struck out two batters and walked one during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright has struggled so far this season and has allowed 15 runs in the last three games. He also has only nine strikeouts in four starts. He is scheduled to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in his next start, and owners could consider benching him if they have another pitcher with a favorable matchup.

Cardinals | Another rough outing for Adam Wainwright

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 15:03:53 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright was tagged for season highs in runs (seven) and hits (10) over 5 1/3 innings on Saturday, April 16, in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Fantasy Tip: About the only good thing to come out of this outing was that Wainwright walked one after issuing five free passes in his previous turn. The 34-year-old should be expected to turn it around sooner than later, but he's had trouble spotting his breaking pitches in 2016. Although owners should feel a bit leery about starting him yet again next week, it is very much worth noting he'll face the San Diego Padres' up-and-down offense in his next scheduled outing on Friday.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright allows five runs Sunday

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 15:23:26 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright allowed five runs in five innings Sunday, April 10, in a 12-7 win over the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Two starts in a row that were either mediocre or bad may have Cardinals fans pausing for concern. Keep in mind he is still recovering from Achilles surgery, and it has been a year since he has thrown a pitch as a starter. You may want to seek other options for the moment, but Wainwright should rebound.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright struggles in opener

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 14:04:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright gave up three runs in six innings, walking three and striking out three in his first regular season start since tearing his Achilles last April. Wainwright took the loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-1.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright got absolutely no help from the St. Louis batters in this game, and he looked a little rusty in his 2016 debut. It's way too early to push the panic button, however. Wainwright still ranks as a key starter on your fantasy roster.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright rusty

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 10:40:17 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright said his arm feels better than in the last two years, but he allowed two hits and three walks in two scoreless innings in spring training Monday, March 7.

Fantasy Tip: At age 34 and coming off a lost year due to injury, Waino certainly is no longer a fantasy ace. However, he's fully healthy and continues to have elite control of all of his pitches. A drop in dominance is about the only thing you need to worry about. Wainwright is a solid third fantasy starter.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright feels great

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 09:18:25 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright said his arm feels "amazing" this spring. He was limited to just 28 innings in 2015 because of an Achilles' injury.

Fantasy Tip: Health and now injury concern moves Waino off the elite tier of starting pitching. He also has questions about lack of strikeouts, but his elite concern should silence those questions. Select him as your third fantasy starter and feel comfortable with it.

Cardinals | Adam Wainwright to start season opener

Sun, 21 Feb 2016 09:35:16 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said SP Adam Wainwright will be the team's Opening Day starter against the Pittsburgh Pirates April 3, barring any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Wainwright made just seven regular-season appearances and tossed 28 innings while missing most of 2015 due to a ruptured Achilles' tendon. However, the 34-year-old right-hander should once again be an elite fantasy option if he is healthy, since his arm wasn't affected by the injury.
