Rangers | Cole Hamels to return Sunday

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 16:46:24 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (groin) threw a successful second bullpen session Wednesday, April 27, and he's scheduled to return to the rotation and face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Sunday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels isn't getting as many strikeouts as he has in the past (23 in 25 inning), but he's been efficient and has gone at least six innings in three of his four starts. Hamels has also allowed three earned runs or less in each of his outings. Facing the Angels Sunday, Hamels should be returned to starting lineups everywhere. The Halos rank dead last in the AL with a .646 OPS.

Rangers | No decision on Cole Hamels

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 16:47:53 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (groin) could return to the rotation as early as this weekend, but the Rangers have yet to make a decision on his next start. Hamels threw a 26-pitch bullpen session without problems Monday, April 25, and threw long toss Tuesday, April 26. He'll need to throw an extended bullpen Wednesday, April 27, before possibly facing the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, April 30. SP Cesar Ramos could step in for Hamels this weekend if needed.

Fantasy Tip: If Hamels doesn't have any setbacks tomorrow, expect him to make his second start against the Angels this season on Saturday. Despite only 23 strikeouts in 25 innings, Hamels hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his four starts this year. The Halos are one of the weaker hitting offenses in the AL, too, so returning Hamels to your lineups would be advised.

Rangers | Cesar Ramos solid as replacement

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 23:45:09 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cesar Ramos made the start Monday, April 25, against the New York Yankees in place of the injured SP Cole Hamels (groin). He allowed three earned runs, nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss.

Fantasy Tip: This might be a one-off start for Ramos. Avoid him in AL-only fantasy leagues unless the team gives him another start.

Rangers | No issues for Cole Hamels

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 16:57:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (hamstring) threw a 26-pitch bullpen session Monday, April 25, and experienced no issues. He could return to the rotation as early as Saturday, April 30, opposite the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Fantasy Tip: Those who own Hamels in weekly leagues can breathe a sigh of relief now, as it was possible Hamels could've missed the whole week if today's bullpen didn't turn out well. Instead, there were no complications, and the veteran southpaw should be all systems go for his next assignment. Considering the Angels are last in baseball in team batting average, there's a solid chance Hamels churns out another quality outing.

Rangers | Cole Hamels to throw bullpen

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 15:02:30 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels (groin) is scheduled to throw a bullpen Monday, April 25. He still might make his start this weekend after being scratched from his outing opposite the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: This puts weekly league owners in a pickle, as Hamels was supposed to have two starts this week, yet may end up having none if his bullpen session doesn't go as desired. Regardless, he's worth keeping in fantasy lineups, as he would take on the Angels if he's healthy enough for his next start. The Halos are currently last in baseball in team batting average, so Hamels could thrive and still give his owners something useful this week.

Rangers | Cole Hamels throwing more sinkers

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 10:26:56 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Jeff Banister and pitching coach Doug Brocail have preached putting the ball in play and getting quick outs with ground balls to their starting pitchers, and it has worked so far this year. Texas starters rank second in the American League and fifth in the majors in pitches per inning (15.6) and seventh in ground-ball-to-fly-ball rate (1.92). SP Cole Hamels is throwing more two-seam sinking fastballs and has 23 ground-ball outs to just two fly balls. Hamels leads the majors in ground-ball percentage.

Fantasy Tip: While Hamels struck out only four in his last outing against the Angels, his ground-ball outs are extremely encouraging for his season-long numbers, and his fantasy owners have to be excited. Continue rolling Hamels out there as a strong No. 2 fantasy starter.

Rangers | Cole Hamels up to two wins already

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 05:17:05 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels allowed a single run on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters through six innings to pick up his second win of the season against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels has a legitimate chance to post a career high in the win column this season because the Rangers project to provide the veteran lefty with plenty of run support. He is a reliable contributor across the other three standard categories, too. Dating back to 2013, Hamels owns a 3.23 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and a 8.7 K/9.

Rangers | Cole Hamels to start opener

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 10:06:30 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels has been tabbed to start on opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the fact that Hamels is now 32, his skills remain rock-solid even with the move to the American League. Hamels can be an ace, but he'll do just fine as your second fantasy starter this year.

Rangers | Cole Hamels struggles early

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 16:44:21 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels has a 3.95 career ERA in the month of April and is 2-7 with a 4.42 ERA in 13 starts in April in the last three years. Hamels struggled getting the ball inside against right-handers in a spring game against minor leaguers Tuesday, March 15. He allowed 10 of 18 hitters to reach base on six hits, two walks and two errors, and he was charged with six runs allowed (three earned).

Fantasy Tip: Owners in daily formats might want to be a little bit more cautious with Hamels early on than they normally would. The move to the American League last year didn't really affect Hamels' stable skills. Nab him as a strong second fantasy starter in the early rounds.

Rangers | Cole Hamels suffers loss in Game 5

Wed, 14 Oct 2015 17:37:21 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits over 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. He walked two and struck out eight.

Fantasy Tip: Hamels ($7,900, 15.8% of cap) didn't perform as poorly as the pitching line might suggest. He exited the game with the bases loaded and a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, with all three baserunners reaching on errors, before the Jays erupted for four runs against the bullpen. Hamels should form a solid 1-2 punch with Yu Darvish at the top of the Rangers' rotation in 2016 and the 31-year-old should be one of the first left-handed starters chosen in seasonal baseball drafts next spring.
