Astros | Jesse Crain could return in early May

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 15:48:26 -0700

Houston Astros RP Jesse Crain (biceps) said he felt some soreness in his first bullpen session last week, but he said he could still return in early May, even though he's yet to throw off a mound again.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like you'll need to be a bit more patient if you drafted Crain hoping he'd fall right back into the closing duties when he was healthy. Chad Qualls, Matt Albers and Joshua Fields are forming a closer-by-committe in the meantime.

Astros | Jesse Crain to throw bullpen

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 13:37:15 -0700

Houston Astros RP Jesse Crain (biceps) will throw his first bullpen of the spring Thursday, March 27.

Fantasy Tip: It's a big step for Crain, who was injured for most of the season last year. Crain should be back early in the season for the Astros if he doesn't suffer any setbacks. He could jump right into the closer's role, too, so it's not a bad idea to stash him on your roster until then.

Astros | Using closer-by-committee

Mon, 24 Mar 2014 08:55:16 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said the team will likely go with a closer-by-committee to start the season, as none of the five closing options including RPs Chad Qualls, Joshua Fields, Kevin Chapman, Matt Albers and Anthony Bass have separated themselves in the competition for ninth-inning duties. Qualls had appeared to be the favorite at the start of camp.

Fantasy Tip: Qualls is still probably the favorite to get the majority of looks in the ninth inning, and he's the only guy you should be looking to own to start the year. Jesse Crain will start the season on the DL, but once he's healthy, he could easily take the closing duties to himself.

That's a good thing and it's still a process, day-by-day thing and building my arm strength back up. Hopefully every day it's getting stronger, which it is," Crain said.

Astros | Several options for closer

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 14:04:43 -0800

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said RPs Jesse Crain, Chad Qualls and Matt Albers will be considered for closer this year, along with RP Joshua Fields. The team would ideally prefer to have one closer, but it may not be that way to start the year. Experience-wise, Qualls may have a leg up. Porter wants his closer to be able to induce weak groundballs, as well.

Houston Astros RP Jesse Crain (biceps) threw off flat ground from 60 feet Saturday, Feb. 15, and still hopes to be ready to pitch in games in April. "(Throwing off) the mound is probably a couple of weeks away," he said. "You've got to get your arm strength up. … I need to get out to 120 feet at least to feel comfortable arm strength-wise to throw off the mound. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks I'll reach that point."
