Orioles | Manny Machado handles SS well

Tue, 03 May 2016 21:55:42 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado started at shortstop Tuesday, May 3, against the New York Yankees with SS J.J. Hardy (foot) on the 15-day disabled list. Machado handled all his chances without incident while 2B Ryan Flaherty slid over to third and was effective. He has a .450/.522/.750 slash line over his past five outings, posting four multi-hit games.

Fantasy Tip: Machado went 1-for-3 with a walk, hitting safely for the fifth straight game after a four-game hitless skid from April 24-27. Machado remains a must-start fantasy option, and his ability to bounce back is why you never bench him despite a cool streak.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy out 6-8 weeks

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:28:42 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) was diagnosed with a hairline fracture on his left foot, and he's expected to miss six to eight weeks. Hardy will land on the disabled list. He was hitting .244/.291/.410 with seven doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 22 games. 2B Ryan Flaherty is expected to be called up from Class AAA Norfolk to replace Hardy on roster. 3B Manny Machado can slide over to shortstop, with Flaherty seeing the bulk of starts at third base.

Fantasy Tip: You can find healthy and possibly more productive shortstop options to replace Hardy in most mixed leagues. Chris Davis and Pedro Alvarez could also slide to third base, but moving Machado over likely makes the most sense. That'll likely give Machado shortstop eligibility this year and next, which could vault him to a top-three pick in 2017 drafts. Flaherty could be useful for depth in AL-only leagues if he sees enough playing time.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy to undergo CT scan Monday

Sun, 01 May 2016 14:39:48 -0700

Updating a previous story, Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) is scheduled to undergo a CT scan on Monday, May 2, after fouling a ball off of his left foot. According to a source, X-rays on the foot revealed something the team wants to check further, although manager Buck Showalter did not divulge any further details.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should be prepared for a stint on the disabled list at this point, which would likely mean Manny Machado logging a number of starts at shortstop while Pedro Alvarez mans the hot corner. Machado is an obvious must-start, while Alvarez should be picked up in whatever leagues in which he is available; despite batting only .216 after today's action, he has picked it up a bit after a slow start with three multi-hit games over his last five.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy departs with foot injury

Sun, 01 May 2016 13:01:32 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) left the game on Sunday, May 1, against the Chicago White Sox after fouling a ball off his left foot. 3B Pedro Alvarez replaced him in the batting order, while 3B/SS Manny Machado slid over from third to play shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: The Orioles figure to make some kind of announcement about the seriousness of this injury in the next few hours. Baltimore doesn't lose much offensively as a result of the injury, although its defense takes a big hit. Hardy is a fringe fantasy option and shouldn't be out too long, however, so continue to use him as you normally would.

Orioles | Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy out

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 11:01:33 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters and SS J.J. Hardy are not in the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Sunday, April 24. 3B Manny Machado will start at shortstop, while 2B Ryan Flaherty will start at third base and is batting ninth. C Caleb Joseph will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph is hitting .250 over his last seven days and could be a cheaper option for owners in two-catcher leagues. Flaherty is hitting only .143 this season and probably should be avoided by owners.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy homers twice, drives in five

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 00:45:47 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy had two homers and drove in five runs Tuesday, April 12, in a 9-5 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy, when healthy, wields a wicked bat. He got off to a slow start this season, but Baltimore's 7-0 start has masked any slumps by Oriole hitters. Hardy should be considered in fantasy circles if his numbers are on the upswing.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy returns to lineup Sunday

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 09:01:03 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (calf) is back in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Sunday, April 10, batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy had been bothered by a tight calf muscle in the last few days and 3B Manny Machado would have started at shortstop Saturday, April 9, if the game hadn't been rained out. Daily fantasy players should give Hardy at least one or two games before relying on him again so that he can prove he is completely healthy.

Orioles | Pair of Orioles expected to sit Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 15:11:03 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones (rib cage) and SS J.J. Hardy (calf) are not in the lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly on Saturday, April 9. 3B Manny Machado will occupy Hardy's spot in the field for the second straight day and bat third while OF Joey Rickard will fill for Jones in center and hit leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: With temperatures expected to dip possibly as low as the high 20s on Saturday, it doesn't make a lot of sense for Baltimore to push its veterans in this spot. Jones is set to miss his third straight game but, like Hardy, is expected to return to the lineup Sunday for the series finale. Jones is a must-start when healthy, even though Rickard has done a fine job in center during his absence; Hardy can be left on waivers in most leagues.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy nursing a tight calf

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 13:26:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (calf) is nursing a tight calf muscle, which is why he is out of the starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy declined significantly in 2015 with a .219/.253/.311 slash line, and at 33, there isn't a lot to like about his bounce-back potential. He should be left to deep mixed leagues. Reiterating a previous tip, Manny Machado is playing his first game at shortstop Friday, which inches him closer to gaining eligibility at the shallow position in leagues where only five games played are required.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy sitting vs. Tampa Bay

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 13:15:07 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy is not in the starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, April 8. 3B Manny Machado is batting third and starting at shortstop, and 2B Ryan Flaherty is starting at third base and batting ninth against Tampa Bay SP Chris Archer Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Machado played seven games at shortstop in 2015, which gave him eligibility there in some leagues, but 2016 owners will be happy to see him start at the 6, especially where he only needs five games at shortstop to gain eligibility this season. Hardy is a fringe option in deep mixed leagues, whereas Flaherty doesn't project to receive enough at-bats to be anything more than a depth option in AL-only formats.
