Orioles | J.J. Hardy still in walking boot

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:54:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) is still in a walking boot and will remain in extended spring training in Sarasota, Fla. He will be reassessed this weekend, manager Buck Showalter said Thursday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: Since the beginning of 2014, Hardy has an underwhelming .247/.285/.351 slash line with just 19 home runs through 1,092 plate appearances. There isn't a lot of fantasy value here outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy on the mend

Thu, 19 May 2016 08:47:13 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) will go to Sarasota, Fla., to continue his rehab Thursday, May 19, and manager Buck Showalter hopes Hardy can return soon after the team's road trip.

Fantasy Tip: The trip ends May 30, which gives him an early June forecast to return. Pedro Alvarez is manning third with Manny Machado at shortstop. Alvarez has a .198-2-8 line and has been a non-factor. He'll likely head back into a DH platoon when Hardy returns. Keep Hardy stashed in most formats, but Alvarez is only a deep AL-only option.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy pain-free

Fri, 13 May 2016 15:10:58 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) said he is pain-free, but he continues to wear a boot on his foot. Hardy hasn't put any pressure on his foot and continues to use crutches. He might get rid of the crutches next week. Hardy might have another CT scan when he goes to Florida for rehab.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy is recovering nicely from a hairline fracture in his foot, but he's still at least several weeks away from returning. Manny Machado is currently in the running for fantasy MVP and has developed shortstop eligibility for this year and next, which makes him even more valuable. Ryan Flaherty continues to start daily at the hot corner but is merely a depth piece in AL-only leagues. Keep Hardy stashed in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues for middle infield depth, since he should return to his starting shortstop role when healthy.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy continuing rehab

Thu, 12 May 2016 14:47:05 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) will go to Sarasota, Florida, to continue his rehab when the club travels for their series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The initial date to get the boot off his foot was May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Wow, Hardy is blazing through his recovery. While he's still weeks away, it looks like he will easily return well before his initial timetable of six to eight weeks. In the meantime, Manny Machado is manning shortstop in his absence, while Ryan Flaherty is being implemented in the lineup at third base. The latter is hitting just .194, however, and doesn't belong on any rosters.

Orioles | Manny Machado handles SS well

Tue, 03 May 2016 21:55:42 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado started at shortstop Tuesday, May 3, against the New York Yankees with SS J.J. Hardy (foot) on the 15-day disabled list. Machado handled all his chances without incident while 2B Ryan Flaherty slid over to third and was effective. He has a .450/.522/.750 slash line over his past five outings, posting four multi-hit games.

Fantasy Tip: Machado went 1-for-3 with a walk, hitting safely for the fifth straight game after a four-game hitless skid from April 24-27. Machado remains a must-start fantasy option, and his ability to bounce back is why you never bench him despite a cool streak.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy out 6-8 weeks

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:28:42 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) was diagnosed with a hairline fracture on his left foot, and he's expected to miss six to eight weeks. Hardy will land on the disabled list. He was hitting .244/.291/.410 with seven doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 22 games. 2B Ryan Flaherty is expected to be called up from Class AAA Norfolk to replace Hardy on roster. 3B Manny Machado can slide over to shortstop, with Flaherty seeing the bulk of starts at third base.

Fantasy Tip: You can find healthy and possibly more productive shortstop options to replace Hardy in most mixed leagues. Chris Davis and Pedro Alvarez could also slide to third base, but moving Machado over likely makes the most sense. That'll likely give Machado shortstop eligibility this year and next, which could vault him to a top-three pick in 2017 drafts. Flaherty could be useful for depth in AL-only leagues if he sees enough playing time.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy to undergo CT scan Monday

Sun, 01 May 2016 14:39:48 -0700

Updating a previous story, Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) is scheduled to undergo a CT scan on Monday, May 2, after fouling a ball off of his left foot. According to a source, X-rays on the foot revealed something the team wants to check further, although manager Buck Showalter did not divulge any further details.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should be prepared for a stint on the disabled list at this point, which would likely mean Manny Machado logging a number of starts at shortstop while Pedro Alvarez mans the hot corner. Machado is an obvious must-start, while Alvarez should be picked up in whatever leagues in which he is available; despite batting only .216 after today's action, he has picked it up a bit after a slow start with three multi-hit games over his last five.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy departs with foot injury

Sun, 01 May 2016 13:01:32 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) left the game on Sunday, May 1, against the Chicago White Sox after fouling a ball off his left foot. 3B Pedro Alvarez replaced him in the batting order, while 3B/SS Manny Machado slid over from third to play shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: The Orioles figure to make some kind of announcement about the seriousness of this injury in the next few hours. Baltimore doesn't lose much offensively as a result of the injury, although its defense takes a big hit. Hardy is a fringe fantasy option and shouldn't be out too long, however, so continue to use him as you normally would.

Orioles | Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy out

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 11:01:33 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters and SS J.J. Hardy are not in the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Sunday, April 24. 3B Manny Machado will start at shortstop, while 2B Ryan Flaherty will start at third base and is batting ninth. C Caleb Joseph will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph is hitting .250 over his last seven days and could be a cheaper option for owners in two-catcher leagues. Flaherty is hitting only .143 this season and probably should be avoided by owners.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy homers twice, drives in five

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 00:45:47 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy had two homers and drove in five runs Tuesday, April 12, in a 9-5 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy, when healthy, wields a wicked bat. He got off to a slow start this season, but Baltimore's 7-0 start has masked any slumps by Oriole hitters. Hardy should be considered in fantasy circles if his numbers are on the upswing.
