Orioles | J.J. Hardy talks shoulder improvements

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 14:29:32 -0800

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (shoulder) attributed his 2015 offensive woes to a nagging shoulder injury, which forced him to protect his left shoulder when swinging at some pitches. "I got started working out earlier this year than I ever have. I think I've got about seven weeks under my belt now. It feels strong. Everything's feeling good," Hardy said about his offseason and shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: After averaging 26 home runs per year from 2011 through 2013, Hardy has just 17 long flies over his past two seasons with an underwhelming .247/.285/.346 slash line. Entering his age-33 season, Hardy's chances of fully bouncing back aren't great, so view him as a low-end option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy sits out Game 2

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 14:44:29 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy is out of the lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday, Oct. 3, with SS Paul Janish hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Janish ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) isn't a potent enough bat to face Luis Severino on FantasyScore.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy has battled shoulder injury

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 12:53:41 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (shoulder) said he has played the entire season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, although he does not plan to undergo surgery in the offseason. Instead, he will rest the shoulder for a while before strengthening it in preparation for next year. Hardy has adjusted his approach offensively because of the injury, overcompensating with his top hand for fear of aggravating the shoulder on his backswing. Further adjustments to his swing and stance have resulted in him falling into bad habits at the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) underwent similar surgery on the same shoulder as a minor leaguer in 2004 and did not want to repeat the process again, which is why he is hoping that rest will take care of the problem. He is only batting .216 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs through 113 games and has also battled back, oblique and groin injuries this year.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy resting for Game 1

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 10:23:33 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of a doubleheader against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman. 3B Manny Machado is moving over to shortstop and 2B Ryan Flaherty is starting at the hot corner and batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Flaherty ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) is a light-hitting utility infielder that should be ignored on FantasyScore.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy sitting out against Rays

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 08:04:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy is not in the starting lineup Sunday, Sept. 20. SS Paul Janish is starting at shortstop and batting ninth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is struggling this season with a .213/.245/.309 slash line, and he doesn't move the needle enough to roster in the majority of seasonal leagues. Janish ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) enters with little FantasyScore value, and he should be viewed as nothing more than a desperation source of cap relief Sunday.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy hitting eighth

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 13:38:18 -0700

Baltimore Orioles J.J. Hardy (groin) is off the 15-day disabled list and back in the lineup Tuesday, Sept. 8, against the New York Yankees. He will bat eighth against SP Masahiro Tanaka.

Fantasy Tip: As with any injury, keep Hardy ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) out of your lineup until he has demonstrated an ability to hit the ball. In other words, he could have a little rust on him as he shakes off not playing for the past couple weeks.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy back from DL

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 11:06:35 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (oblique) was activated from the disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy's ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) return will allow the O's to move Manny Machado back to third base. You shouldn't be in any rush to put Hardy into your daily lineups. He was hitting only .157 (11-for-70) with no homers in August, and there's no guarantee he'll play every day down the stretch.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy expected to return

Mon, 07 Sep 2015 13:54:45 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (oblique) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) likely will return to the starting lineup when he is activated. He is hitting .222 this season, so owners may want to see him play in a few games before considering him as an option.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy could return soon

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:38:32 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (oblique) may accompany the team on their upcoming road trip. He is eligible to return from the disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Hardy ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) may not require a minor league rehab assignment before being activated. He should be stashed only in AL-only seasonal leagues. Paul Janish ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) will continue to see most of the time at shortstop for the O's in his absence but he provides nothing more than salary cap relief.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy works out

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 15:29:12 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (oblique) took batting practice and ground balls Tuesday, Sept. 1, and said he felt fine. He said he'll "sprint and run" over the next few days before the Orioles think about activating him from the disabled list Sept. 8. A minor league rehab schedule has been discussed, but it may not be necessary.

Fantasy Tip: Hardy ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) doesn't have much time to make an impact for fantasy owners in the season's final month, which is why he should only be stashed in deeper AL-only leagues. Paul Janish ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) should continue to hold down shortstop duties until Hardy returns, but he isn't of much use in any fantasy baseball format.
