Cardinals | Matt Holliday unsure of time at 1B

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 11:27:28 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday suggested to the team this winter that he could begin working out at first base but is unsure how much time he'll get at the position once official workouts begin.

Fantasy Tip: Brandon Moss appears to be the early favorite at first, although a slimmed-down Matt Adams figures to push him for playing time. Holliday is coming off a rare injury-plagued season, so the 36-year-old seven-time All-Star could see a bit of a boost to his late-round fantasy stock with added positional eligibility.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday working out at 1B

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 10:15:08 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Holliday is working extensively at playing first base in Jupiter, Fla. Holliday was said to be resistant to it during the season, but he's working out under his own volition to extend his career. If he looks good there, the Cardinals could consider a free-agent outfielder like Alex Gordon (Royals).

Fantasy Tip: This move has kind of been the elephant in the room for a few years, but reports were that Holliday struggled at the position in the minors. If the move is a success, he would gain a bit of fantasy luster because outfield is deeper than first.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday has no restrictions

Tue, 17 Nov 2015 07:43:42 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) said he has no restrictions or pain, but he's still not doing full-fledged leg workouts. Holliday also admitted he came back too early from his first quadriceps strain last season. "The first time, I was just back too early," Holliday said. "I felt like I could manage it, but I knew I was still at some risk. I felt I can run at 80% and the minute I lost my mind and just out of instinct in that game against the (Cincinnati) Reds trying to (avoid) the close double play, I just instinctively took off. It popped right away. They thought it wasn't as bad as the first one, but after further evaluation it was worse than the first one. The second time I waited a lot longer and made sure I didn't feel I was at risk."

Holliday also said he doesn't feel like he's a different hitter after only hitting four home runs last season. "I know I haven't quite had the power that I had," Holliday said. "It's in there. I'm going to get after it a little bit earlier in the cage this year and see if I can do some things. I don't look at myself as a different hitter. I don't think I am. I have goals of hitting the ball hard and hitting it in the gap and getting on base and swinging at good pitches. All of that is the same as before."

Fantasy Tip: Holliday will be 36 this season and he could come at a discount with the dearth of youthful outfielders in the game. Holliday's power has dipped two years in a row and was on pace to dip again last season before the injuries. So know what you're drafting in the top portion of the median at the position.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday won't change positions

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 17:25:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny put an end to rumors that the team was considering moving OF Matt Holliday to first base, saying that he would remain in left field.

Fantasy Tip: Holliday hit .279 with four home runs and 35 RBIs in 73 regular-season games this year and has never played first base at any level in professional baseball.

Cardinals | Two players hot against Kyle Hendricks

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 00:59:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter and OF Matt Holliday have solid records against Chicago Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks. Carpenter is 6-for-10 with a homer and three RBIs and Holliday is 6 for 12 with two homers and four RBIs.

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) and Holliday ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) are sweet targets for your FantasyScore lineup under these circumstances. Past history suggests one or both players could sizzle in Game 2 of the NLDS.

Cardinals | Several STL starters resting in Game 2

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 13:13:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday, OF Jason Heyward, 3B Matt Carpenter, OF Stephen Piscotty, SS Jhonny Peralta and 2B Kolten Wong are all not starting in Game 2 of the doubleheader Sunday, Oct. 4, against the Atlanta Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Seeing this is the final game of the regular season, this is to be expected. Manager Mike Matheny is simply resting his starters. Of the reserves, OF Tommy Pham ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) might be worth a flier on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | St. Louis resting regulars

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 13:29:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OFs Jason Heyward, Matt Holliday and Stephen Piscotty (head), 3B Matt Carpenter, 2B Kolten Wong and SS Jhonny Peralta are not in the starting lineup against the Atlanta Braves Friday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals boast strong depth, so their lineup isn't exactly a cast of Class AAA players. However, Braves SP Julio Teheran ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) owns a 3.06 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .596 OPS through his 16 starts at Turner Field this season. There are enough cushier matchups to target for FantasyScore players Friday.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday sitting out nightcap

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:37:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday is not in the lineup for Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, Sept. 30. OF Randal Grichuk is starting in left field and is hitting sixth against Pirates SP Charlie Morton.

Fantasy Tip: Grichuk's ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) elbow woes are believed to be behind him, so he's a perfectly acceptable value pick on FantasyScore this evening.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday not in Sunday lineup

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 10:59:54 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday is not starting Sunday, Sept. 27. OF Randal Grichuk is in Holliday's left-field spot against Milwaukee Brewers SP Tyler Cravy, and he is batting fourth.

Fantasy Tip: Holliday ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is getting some time off because the team wants to work him along slowly after two quad injuries. Grichuk ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) should be utilized if you can, as he has a 3-for-6 record against Cravy that includes a home run.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday draws into lineup

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 16:32:09 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday is starting in left field and hitting third against Milwaukee Brewers SP Ariel Pena Friday, Sept. 25. OF Randal Grichuk is not in the lineup as a result.

Fantasy Tip: Holliday ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has barely played since coming off the DL, so there's plenty of reason to be hesitant to use him on FantasyScore. However, if you do, he has a juicy matchup against Pena.
