Cardinals | Matt Holliday unable to run

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 18:11:31 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps, illness) was scheduled to test his quadriceps injury with running and agility drills Monday, July 6. However, he was sent home to the team's hotel as he battles a virus.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Holliday did not suffer some sort of a setback with his quad, but the bad news is that he is likely to be behind schedule a couple of days. He is hopeful of playing in the All-Star Game, but it's likely the team would want to see him play real games first.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday wants to play in ASG

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 10:30:49 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) said he plans to play in the All-Star Game this year after he returns to the team's lineup soon. Holliday still has to clear some hurdles, such as change-of-direction drills, in order to possibly return from the disabled list and play later this week against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "I feel like I'm getting pretty close," Holliday said. "But you can't go from 50% to 100% without all the steps in between. You don't roll out there at 80% and something surprises you and you re-hurt it."

Fantasy Tip: It looks like you'll be able to activate Holliday ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) in traditional fantasy formats later this week. On FantasyScore, it may be best to take a wait-and-see approach with Holliday in daily games as he gets back into the swing of major-league pitching.

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 14:06:31 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) will accompany the team on its road trip next week, and he could return before the first half ends July 12.

Fantasy Tip: Holly ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) will be a nice option at that price on FantasyScore upon his return.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday taking BP

Sat, 27 Jun 2015 14:09:07 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) is taking batting practice Saturday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Holly is making steady progress. His original timetable has him missing three more weeks. He might be ahead of schedule from that if he comes out of BP fine.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday hopeful to run next week

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 15:16:38 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) is expected to test his quadriceps running next week, and the organization is not ruling out a return before the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: It appears to be an aggressive timeline, especially with Holliday not even beginning to run until next week. He'll need a rehab assignment, too. Fantasy owners shouldn't count on any returns from Holliday until late July. Continue to stash him in all formats.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday not running

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 09:00:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) has ramped up his baseball activities but isn't ready to return to game action, as he hasn't even progressed to the point where he can test his leg by running. He has hit off a tee and played catch and said his quadriceps was getting "stronger" and "better." Holliday is getting closer, but there is no clear timetable for a return.

Fantasy Tip: Holliday needs to remain stashed in a DL slot in all leagues. Be patient, as he can still be effective for your team in the second half. Randal Grichuk ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) has been effective for fantasy owners in all leagues, and his mix of speed and power plays nicely at FantasyScore, too, for a modest price.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday starts activities

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 06:01:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) has begun throwing and hitting off a tee this week. Holliday has received acupuncture as part of his treatment, and he has been able to strengthen the leg.

Fantasy Tip: He's still three or four weeks away from a return. Keep him stashed in all formats. Randal Grichuk ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) has come alive in Holly's absence. He has a .348-3-5 line the last week and is a mid-to-low outfield option on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday out another month

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 09:31:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps) is expected to be out another month.

Fantasy Tip: Randal Grichuk ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is filling in, and the team is absolutely enamored with his five-tool potential. He's hitting .239-1-4 with 18 K's in 46 June at-bats, so he has a ways to go. He's a low-end matchup player on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Jon Jay starting in left field

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 16:25:17 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay will start in left field and hit seventh in the order Tuesday, June 9, against the Colorado Rockies. Jay is replacing OF Matt Holliday (quadriceps).

Fantasy Tip: Jay ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is hitting just .222 against lefties for the season, so he can be avoided against LHP Jorge De La Rosa, even at Coors Field. Jay gets the first crack to be Holliday's real-life replacement in left field, but he won't hold much fantasy value in anything other than NL-only leagues.
