Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke wins seventh straight start

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 15:20:29 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke yielded a solo homer to the second batter he faced on Saturday, June 18, then allowed only two more hits to the Philadelphia Phillies over eight innings of work to move to 10-3.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke was 3-3 with a 5.26 ERA after losing to the San Francisco Giants on May 12, but has been nearly lights out since, going 7-0 with a 1.90 ERA. If there is one downside during his hot streak, it is that he has only struck out more than seven batters once. Greinke's recent dominance figures to get its best test yet Thursday at the Colorado Rockies. While owners in most leagues should probably leave him in their lineups for that start, DFS owners should consider other alternatives.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke downs old team

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 22:53:53 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke allowed two earned runs, seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over seven innings in a win Monday, June 13, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, his former team.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke started out super slow this season, but he is now up to nine victories and is pitching to his capabilities once again. Fantasy owners were nervous early on, but he has re-emerged as a top-flight fantasy option again.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke tosses CG shutout

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 22:35:46 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke registered a complete game shutout for his eighth win of the season Tuesday, June 7, against the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-hander surrendered only three hits, two walks, and he struck out two.

Fantasy Tip: All the talk about Greinke's struggles in the beginning of the year is now a thing of the past. That's because Greinke has been outstanding since the end of April, and he's out to a terrific start in June with a 16-inning scoreless streak. He may have started slow but at least it looks like the former Cy Young winner is back to his old self and straight up dealing.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke rounding into form

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 11:33:11 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke is 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last four starts and 7-1 with a 3.46 ERA in his last 10 starts. On the season he is 7-3 with a 4.29 ERA. Greinke is 3-3 with a 6.54 ERA in seven home starts, and he faces the Tampa Bay Rays at Chase Field Tuesday, June 7.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke had a terrible start to the year but is starting to look more like the runner up for Cy Young in the National League in 2015. He's been bad at home, though, and the Rays have hit well on the road, so Greinke is a risk-reward play in daily games tonight. But based on how well he's pitched of late, you probably aren't sitting him in seasonal leagues.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke masterful in win

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 15:44:41 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke was at his best Thursday, June 2, opposite the Houston Astros. The right-hander twirled seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits. He also struck out a season-high 11 batters and walked none.

Fantasy Tip: Although he's now 7-3, Greinke has been painfully inconsistent this season for his owners. On this day at least, he was able to come through with his best performance as a Diamondback. The former Cy Young winner has exhibited shades of his old self, and hopefully his outing this afternoon can pave the way for more consistency. Arizona could certainly use it.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke showing well on the road

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 10:40:12 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA through his past four road starts. He is starting at Minute Maid Park against the Houston Astros Thursday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: While Greinke would have to rebound in a big way to return to ace status, it is likely best to stick with the veteran at this stage, as opposed to selling him for cents on the dollar. His track record is solid enough to view him as a mid-rotation arm going forward, and he boasts a high-end ceiling. At the same time, it isn't out of the question to be selective with who you start Greinke against, especially at home.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke pleased with outing

Sun, 29 May 2016 05:10:42 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two batters during the Diamondbacks' 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres Saturday, May 28. "Fastball was probably the best it's been all year," Greinke said. "Been pitching good the past month, been winning a lot of games, that's really all that matters. I probably pitched better today than in some other games where I've had better results."

Fantasy Tip: Through his past six games, Greinke is 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 36 punchouts through 40 innings. There likely will be better results in the ERA column going forward, but after his start to the season, Greinke owners should be pleased with his progress. Greinke should be viewed as a solid No. 2 starter for your fantasy rotation, but you also shouldn't rule out the possibility for him to return to ace status, either.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke mixes up arsenal

Sun, 22 May 2016 17:13:46 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke allowed one run on five hits while walking one and striking out seven over eight innings in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, May 21, and he said he used his curveball more often and did a better job of mixing up his pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke was never going to approach last year's numbers, but perhaps the change in pitch selection could lead to more strong outings.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke's fastball not fooling hitters

Fri, 20 May 2016 17:13:12 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke is 4-3 with a 5.08 ERA and leads the majors in hits allowed. He has allowed one run or less just once in nine starts after doing so 21 times in 2015. Opponents are hitting .402/.442/.690 with a 12.6% strikeout rate against his fastball compared to .201/.261/.362 with a 19.4% strikeout rate last year.

Fantasy Tip: We warned fantasy owners that Greinke was in line for a rough transition to the desert with his new team. He's especially struggled at Chase Field. His mediocre fastball in 2016 could be a mechanical issue. In any event, it's unlikely he's this bad, but he shouldn't come anywhere near to his 2015 numbers. Be wary of starting him at home against certain opponents.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke's fastball ails him

Thu, 19 May 2016 23:05:39 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke's fastball is being pummeled with a .402/.442/.690 slash line and a 12.6% swing-and-miss rate. Last season, the slash line against it was .201/.261/.362 with a 19.4% whiff rate. He has allowed one run or fewer once in nine starts after doing it 21 times last year. His 67 hits allowed are the most in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: It's still incredibly early, and several aces are being tattooed. He has an 8.10 K/9, which is nearly identical to last season's masterpiece. He'll figure it out eventually, but the desert in Arizona isn't likely to do him many favors. For that, we'd temper buy-low expectations.
