Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano to receive extra rest

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 17:03:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said SP Francisco Liriano will receive extra rest following his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, Sept. 19. He has thrown 167 innings over 28 starts this year, which is his highest total since he tossed 191 2/3 innings during the 2010 season.

Fantasy Tip: After facing the Dodgers, Liriano's ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) next outing will come against the Chicago Cubs Sept. 26, giving him six days' rest. He is a risky play in FantasyScore Saturday, with a 1-1 record and a 5.40 ERA over 13 1/3 innings during the month of September.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano on quite the roll

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 22:54:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano is scheduled to start Thursday, Sept. 3, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 8-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 17 starts since allowing a season-high seven runs May 19. He is 6-5 with a 4.06 ERA in 14 career appearances against the Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: The way Liriano ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) has been going he is a must-start FantasyScore play, even though the Brewers have knocked off the Pirates in five straight games.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano wins again

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 01:06:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano gave up two unearned runs and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings to win his fifth straight decision, as the Pirates knocked off the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday, Aug. 23. Pittsburgh is 10-0 in Liriano's last 10 starts dating back to June 26.

Fantasy Tip: Needless to say, Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) should be started in FantasyScore while he is this hot in the Pirates lineup. He hasn't gotten the decision every time in this stretch, but when you're on a five-game winning streak you want to ride it as long as possible.

Giants | Brandon Belt not starting Sunday

Sun, 23 Aug 2015 13:55:01 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt is not starting Sunday, Aug. 23, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. C Buster Posey is at first base and C Andrew Susac is catching, and Posey is batting third against Pirates SP Francisco Liriano.

Fantasy Tip: Belt ($5,300, 10.6% of cap) appears to be the victim of a lefty vs. lefty matchup in this game, as he hits .237-4-14 against left-handed pitching. Posey ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) hits .455 against Liriano, so he should definitely be in your FantasyScore lineup if you need a catcher.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano looks to stay hot

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 21:41:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano is scheduled to face the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, Aug. 18. He is 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA in eight starts since his last loss June 20 against the Washington Nationals.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) is worth a roll of the dice in FantasyScore since he has been on fire lately. In his previous start against the Diamondbacks he allowed just two hits with six walks and seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 scoreless innings in a win in Arizona April 26.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano ready for next start

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 14:52:11 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (armpit) threw a 34-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Aug. 11, and said he is ready to start against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,500, 17.0% of cap) left his start early Saturday, Aug. 8, after feeling discomfort near his right armpit. It is a tough matchup against the Cardinals, so while Liriano has been excellent this season, he could have a difficult time returning the four-point win bonus at FantasyScore. View him as a high-risk, high-reward option in daily contests Thursday.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano to start Saturday

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 19:29:34 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano will make his next scheduled start Saturday, Aug. 8, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday, Aug. 4. Liriano worked two innings Monday, Aug. 3, against the Chicago Cubs, but the work was washed out by rain and the statistics did not count. Hurdle will use the rainout to break up his three left-handed pitchers who were slotted to start consecutively.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) should be well rested for Saturday's outing, but facing the Dodgers is not exactly favorable for FantasyScore purposes. You might want to go another way.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano has start postponed

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 21:57:33 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed one hit with one walk and three strikeouts in his start Monday, Aug. 3, against the Chicago Cubs, but his start was washed out when the game was postponed. None of the statistics will count.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) is expected to pitch over the weekend unless manager Clint Hurdle mixes up his rotation to move Liriano up. FantasyScore players received another tough reminder Monday why you must always double-check the weather report and stay away from outdoor trouble spots.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano sinks original team

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:55:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed three runs - two earned - while scattering 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a win Wednesday, July 29, against the Minnesota Twins, his original MLB team. He also struck out four and did not walk any batters.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) is unbeaten in three decisions over his past six starts dating back to June 20, allowing two or fewer earned runs in each of the six outings. He is a solid FantasyScore option, especially when the matchup is a favorable one.
