Pirates | Francisco Liriano struggles again

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 15:49:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano struggled again in a loss Monday, June 27, opposite the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 4 1/3 innings, Liriano yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and five walks. He also struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran southpaw has really hit a rough patch as of late, as he's now given up at least four earned runs in five of his past six starts. The common denominator, unsurprisingly, has been walks, as he's issued at least three free passes in all of those outings as well. Liriano looks like he should be kept on the bench in most leagues right now until improvement is shown. At this rate, he could be dealt out of Pittsburgh in the next month if the Pirates continue to fade from contention.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano so-so in no-decision

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 21:53:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed four earned runs, six hits and three walks with six strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, June 22. He threw just 57 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano has been a giant disappointment from a fantasy perspective, posting a 4-7 record, 5.17 ERA and 1.63 ERA. He is still worth a look in most formats for his strikeouts.

Pirates | Orioles interested in Francisco Liriano

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 15:28:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano has drawn interest from the Baltimore Orioles, but Pittsburgh remains focused on competing for a playoff berth.

Fantasy Tip: It would make a lot of sense, as the Orioles badly need some starting pitching help if they want to make it into October, but the Pirates would be justified, too, if they decided to hang onto the veteran left-hander while trying to make it back to the postseason. Even if Liriano were to land in Baltimore, switching to the American League would only hurt his stock even further, as he's already been a pretty big disappointment this season. His trade situation is still worth monitoring, however.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano shelled in loss

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 19:53:42 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits while walking four and striking out two over 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, June 3.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano has allowed five runs or more in three of his last five starts, and his ERA is up to 5.25. Hang on to him in season-long leagues, but stay away from him DFS play right now.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano nabs fourth win

Tue, 24 May 2016 19:49:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano improved to 4-3 after defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in his start Tuesday, May 24. He tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and five walks. He also had two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano didn't really have his command on this night, as he walked five batters for the third time this season, but fortunately for him, the offense provided three runs in the first inning to make things a bit easier. He's now allowed two runs or fewer in three of four starts this month, so while his current season numbers are off from his usual output, the left-hander is still worth deploying in fantasy on a regular basis.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano suffers hard-luck loss

Wed, 18 May 2016 19:14:16 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (3-3) allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, May 18, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano bounced back from a disastrous performance against the Chicago Cubs in his last outing and pitched well enough to win Wednesday, but Julio Teheran was even more dominant. He has four quality starts in his last five games and will make his next start versus the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, May 24.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano struggles Friday

Fri, 13 May 2016 18:43:52 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (3-2) allowed eight runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs Friday, May 13, with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano allowed three home runs in a start that was his worst of the 2016 season by far. Despite this rough outing, he should be viewed as a strong fantasy play for his next scheduled appearance against the light-hitting Atlanta Braves Wednesday, May 18.

Pirates | Pittsburgh rotation update after PPD

Tue, 10 May 2016 22:37:44 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates will use SP Juan Nicasio Wednesday, May 11, against the Cincinnati Reds after the game Tuesday, May 10, was rained out. SP Francisco Liriano will work in the series opener Friday, May 13, against the Chicago Cubs, followed by SP Jeff Locke Saturday, May 14, and SP Gerrit Cole Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has the best matchup, as he faces the lowly Reds. Locke has the worst luck of the four, as he'll now draw Jake Arrieta in Saturday's game, rather than facing Jason Hammel Friday.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano fans 10 in win

Fri, 06 May 2016 20:33:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out 10 over seven innings in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, May 6, improving to 4-0 with a 2.07 ERA in six starts at Busch Stadium.

Fantasy Tip: After an uneven start to the year, Liriano has been stout in his last two outings. The strong strikeout totals further boost his value. He is a matchup play in daily formats and a must-start in seasonal formats.
