Phillies | Ryan Howard might enter platoon

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:06:12 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard may be thrust into a platoon if he doesn't start hitting left-handed pitchers, according to manager Pete Mackanin. "I'm going to tell him, 'If you want to face lefties, you have to hit them better,'" he told reporters. "If you don't hit them better, I'm going to platoon. That's basically what we're looking at."

Fantasy Tip: No one can argue with Mackanin's logic, as Howard posted a dreadful .418 OPS opposite left-handers a season ago, which was the lowest for a Phillies hitter since 1914. Furthermore, Mackanin also can rely on Darin Ruf, who posted an NL-leading 1.107 OPS versus lefties. Howard is someone owners should avoid.

Phillies | Ryan Howard files defamation suit

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 09:05:06 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard has filed a lawsuit against Al Jazeera, which reported that Howard, along with others, received shipments of performance-enhancing drugs. Howard claims the report contained false statements and was inaccurate, unsubstantiated and reckless in nature.

Fantasy Tip: Howard has fallen on hard times the last few seasons. He's hit around .220 the last two years and no longer has 30-homer power, even at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. He's always been a high strikeout guy, but a slower stick has cause him to make even less solid contact than before. At the right price later in mixed league drafts, Howard can be a power asset as a corner infielder, however.

Phillies | Ryan Howard heading towards a platoon?

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 13:47:41 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard could platoon at first base this season, according to manager Pete Mackanin. Mackanin said he is "50-50" and will decide after the holidays.

Fantasy Tip: Currently, Howard should be viewed as an endgame source of home runs and RBI in drafts. However, without a full-time gig, his stock would drop significantly. Darin Ruf killed lefties last season (1.107 OPS), though, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Howard and Ruf split duties at first base.

Phillies | Market for Ryan Howard unknown

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 13:12:07 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is on the trade block, but the market for his services is unknown, and the team is alright entering the 2016 season with Howard as their starting first baseman, according to general manager Matt Klentak.

Fantasy Tip: For the second consecutive season, Howard hit exactly 23 home runs, and he only played 129 games in 2015. However, he also hit below .230 for the second straight year. Howard should be viewed as a nothing more than a late-round source of pop in seasonal leagues, and he is a huge anchor in the batting average department.

Phillies | Ryan Howard still out

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 07:29:25 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) is out of the lineup Thursday, Oct. 1, with 1B Darin Ruf hitting fifth. Howard's season is likely over.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is a good start against lefty Sean Gilmartin on FantasyScore today. Ruf has owned lefties to a .374-7-20 clip this year.

Phillies | Ryan Howard likely done for 2015

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 15:38:52 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) is unlikely to play again this season, according to manager Pete Mackanin. "It doesn't look good for him to play the rest of the year," Mackanin said. "Especially, we have a few lefties coming up. I don't know if it makes sense, but I'll see what he wants to do. If he wants to play a game, I'll throw him in there."

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore players can ignore Howard ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) for the remainder of the season, and Howard should be replaced in all seasonal leagues. Darin Ruf ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) projects to continuing manning the 3 for the rest of the campaign.

Phillies | No Ryan Howard vs. Mets

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 13:32:10 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) remains out of the lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. 1B Darin Ruf is starting at first base and is hitting cleanup against New York Mets SP Logan Verrett.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) isn't a fantasy option when facing a right-handed hurler, as he boasts an underwhelming .484 OPS against them this season. Howard ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is looking more and more unlikely to return this season, and he should be viewed as a desperation own in seasonal leagues.

Phillies | Ryan Howard remains out

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 11:43:40 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) remains out of the lineup Tuesday, Sept. 29. 1B Darin Ruf is starting at first base and is hitting cleanup against New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a favorable hitting spot tonight, Ruf ($3,800, 7.6% of cap), who swings and misses frequently, remains a low-end daily commodity. Against right-handers, he's hitting a disappointing .159 (25-for-157) with only three of his 10 long balls.

Phillies | No Ryan Howard against Washington

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 15:11:34 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) is not in the starting lineup Friday, Sept. 25. 1B Darin Ruf is starting at first base and batting fourth against Washington Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Howard ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) hopes to play again this season, but seasonal fantasy owners have no reason to hold out hope outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. Ruf ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) owns a .402 OPS against right-handed pitchers and has no place in your FantasyScore lineups Friday.

Phillies | Ryan Howard remains out vs. Fish

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 13:46:22 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Sept. 24. 1B Darin Ruf is starting at first base and batting fourth against Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Howard ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is expected to play again this season, but there is still no timetable for him to return. He can be replaced in the majority of seasonal leagues. Ruf ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) thrives against left-handed pitchers and owns just a .411 OPS against righties. He isn't worth targeting at FantasyScore Thursday.
