Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was on the bench for a third consecutive day Friday, July 25, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His replacement, 1B/OF Darin Ruf, went 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run scored and RBI.
Fantasy Tip: Philly was facing another left-handed starter, and Howard is hitting just .209 (19-for-91) with 40 strikeouts and a .275 on-base percentage vs. LHP. If he sits Saturday against Diamondbacks SP Josh Collmenter, a righty, then fantasy owners should really be concerned.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard will be the team's first baseman in 2015, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.
Fantasy Tip: Howard's 2015 fantasy value doesn't look enticing, outside a final-round flier in mixed leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the lineup Friday, July 25, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Wade Miley, a left-hander. 1B Darin Ruf is playing first base and batting seventh.
Fantasy Tip: So continues the platoon saga that'll give Ruf more deep-mixed value and makes Howard expendable in many formats.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not a candidate to be released, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., but that a straight platoon arrangement is possible. Amaro anticipates Howard being with the team next year at spring training.
Fantasy Tip: Howard, however, will lose playing time to Darin Ruf, which strips away much of his already tenuous mixed-league value. Howard is the subject of trade talks, so maybe a better situation will help him recover.

The Philadelphia Phillies are working hard to trade 1B Ryan Howard and would be willing to swallow much or most of the remaining $70 million they owe him, according to rival executives.
Fantasy Tip: Howard's relationship with Philly management is becoming toxic, and a change of scenery could be a positive. Still, you know what you're getting with Howard: low BA, decent power and RBI potential. He could be much more useful in an AL environment.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the lineup Thursday, July 24, against a right-handed pitcher. Manager Ryne Sandberg wants to get 1B Darin Ruf's feet wet after his recent call-up, but he also said that he's planning on using a platoon more frequently moving forward.
Fantasy Tip: Ruf should be added in NL-only and some deep mixed games. Howard is looking more droppable in mixed leagues by the day.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was held out of the lineup Wednesday, July 23, against the San Francisco Giants. Manager Ryne Sandberg suggested the first base spot "will be a day-to-day thing," and that Howard's huge contract will not dictate playing time. "It's about wins and losses out here," Sandberg said. "When the game starts, it's about winning the game and being productive and chipping in and doing the part and doing something to help win a game. If that means playing somebody else there and there's production right away - that's trying to win a baseball game." OF Darin Ruf made the start at first base with a left-handed pitcher on the hill for San Francisco. He played four of his past five games at Triple-A at first base, so the team appears to have been planning an unofficial platoon type situation.
Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners cannot be pleased with the news, although it's hardly a surprise given Howard's low batting average. Fantasy owners knew what they were getting into before drafting Howard back in the spring. With the team out of contention, using some younger players in the lineup down the stretch wouldn't be surprising, so if you're a Howard owner, especially in daily leagues, picking up Ruf, and perhaps stashing Maikel Franco, is essential.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the lineup Wednesday, July 23. 1B/OF Darin Ruf if hitting seventh and playing first base.
Fantasy Tip: The Phils are facing San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner, so the newly recalled Ruf is getting platoon duty. He's worth a grab in NL-only and some deep mixed games.

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco went 0-for-2 with two fly-outs at the 2014 All-Star Futures Game Sunday, July 13. However, he may be coming up to the majors soon. Franco is hitting .390 in 41 at-bats in July with nine extra-base hits in nine contests. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters last week that Franco may be an option if his bat heats up, and that he's looking to make changes to the Phillies' lineup. He noted that Franco also could play first base.
Fantasy Tip: He could challenge Cody Asche for work at third base and even Ryan Howard for PAs at first. Franco is worth tucking away if you need CI help in deep mixed games.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard's eighth-inning double Thursday, July 10, snapped his streak of 66 plate appearances without an extra-base hit. It was the longest drought of Howard's career.
Fantasy Tip: Howard only has 23 extra-base hits on the season. While he is still a mediocre source of power, with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs, he is hitting just .226 on the season. His best days are in the rearview mirror.
